Hello there, I'm very happy I found this Mastiff Forum ! we just got our beautiful 10 week old English Mastiff Leo, being a first time Mastiff owner I'm sure I'll learn alot from this site. I was wondering, with this breed are they not as active as other breed puppies ? my guy likes to go out side and he'll walk around a little then plop himself down. I'm use to puppies being very hyper and running everywhere from other breeds we've had in the past. Thanks in advance.

Greetings, my wife and I are the parents of a 10 week old twanny colored Neopolitan Mastiff pup named Claudia.

First the bad, the pup was an impulse buy, so her parents health is unknown. The wife always wanted a mastiff and I have a hard time telling her no, so when Nikki saw Claudia it was game over.

Now on to the good,

Claudia has been to the vet and seems to be in good health and confirmation. She is crazy smart for a 10 week old puppy and learned her name and has begun to learn the come command in 2 days. She is rapidly bonding with my wife, the 3 kids, 3 other dogs and 2 cats as well as myself. Each day she is more inquisitive. Her potty training proceeds apace mostly good but some slip ups. She is also in a forever home, we are home owners and once an animal is in, its in. We have a geriatic pitbull, a severly inbred lab (found in a ditch by our house) who needed stomach surgery after injesting pine needles, a lab mix we had to nurse back to health with a syringe fed diet of honey, milk and egg, and a flea allegic half hairless cat. The other cat is the only normal member of the family with 4 legs.

The biggest problem right now is convincing Claudia to eat kibble and to take to her crate.

Part of the good is after I bought her I swarmed the net looking for information on the breed. I got a good chuckle when I found out about the slobber, gas and other bodily functions of the breed, the wife hates slimly, stinky or drooly. But she agreed to take care of Claudia and so far has been hard at work living up to it. I think with time, drool will be like baby poop, just one of those things.Me, I don't mind it, dogs are dogs and I have a pit and 2 labs.

Besides the vet and post-purchase net research we've also gone out and bought her quality toys and ropes, crate, quality food etc. We''ve also begun teaching her where she can sleep and sit, researched training classes etc.

Ok back to the kibble issue...

She doesn't like it, hopefully she will grow into it.

Our plan is to use a mix of natures choice large breed puppy and natures choice large breed adult both are lower protein premium foods. This should be about half her diet by weight (adjusted upwards as she grows). This should not risk her growing too fast. To this will be added liberal portions of mixed veggies and a daily raw egg. I've read that using low grain kibble with mixed veggies like this can seriously cut down the risk of GDV. Its not a BARF diet, but hopefully it will let her reach her potential.

Hello everyone!

I am a very loving mother to two Mastiffs. I have a Bull Mastiff who will be 3 next month. I also have a 10 month old French Mastiff. I joined this forum because I need help. My French Mastiff (Hayden) is a little bit of a terror. I love her with all of my heart but she just does NOT seem to understand the concept of potty training and she chews everything!! From coffee tables, to rugs, to couches!! I feel as though I have tried everything but she is just not "getting it." I thought Hayden was doing this out of frustration but, I just don't think thats the case anymore. I walk her everyday, at least once. I have a large backyard for her to run in. She has more toys than a child. Is it normal for her to be 10 months old and still doing these things? I have tried crate training her since I got her at 8 weeks but, I stopped using the crate about a month ago because she would potty in the cage every time I left. I came home to a hole in my leather couch today - the crate is coming back! =] What else do I do? I will take ANY advice!

Thank you.

P.S. I love this forum so far, especially the pictures! =]

Hello,
I'm new to this site, and very excited to talk to other mastiff owners. I live in a small town and not alot of mastiff owners around. I have 3 english mastiffs. Well, I guess I really have 10 mastiffs right now. My female just had 7 beautiful puppies. I do have a question for anyone out there that can help. I have a 8 month old female that was purchased with the intent to breed that has recentley been diagnosed with chin pyoderma. My vet gave me some surgical scrub (chlorhexidine) to clean the chin with. And told me to try (ha ha ha) and keep the chin dry. I was concerned that this may be a genetic/hereditary concern in regards to breeding, but he didn't seem to think so. Any comments or info re: this would be very helpful. thanks

Hi everyone.

My SO's co-worker is rehoming a Japanese Mastiff (Tosa Inu) pup and we are most likely going to get her in the next couple weeks (before the end of the month).

We've both had rescues before (mostly labs and german shepherd/mixes), but this is a different dog than the lab mixes we are used to.

Is there anything we should do different to prepare for her? We already have a vet and a kennel that we respect. My good friend is the kennel owner, so I know I can always ask questions of her.

Just wanted to get some ideas from people that are around Mastiff breeds a lot.

Thanks!

Hello folks! happy to be here! I am a 35 yr old female who absolutley luvs molossers! I have been owned in the past by 3 Presa Canarios and I am looking forward to being owned again one day by another lapdog/bedhog! I currently have been adopted by a bloodhound/shepard mix and a border/spitz mix and I luv them dearly! I am looking for the right molosser to fit into our family, from the right breeder! So far no luck! I am ever hopeful though!
My last Presa was hit by a car and was killed instantly (thank god) His name was Chester! he was soo sweet and gentle! Before him was Rocks and Opal. Opal passed at the age of 12, quietly at home and Rocks was 14 when she passed. So I didn't have any more fur babies for a long time, but then I was at a shelter witha friend (getting a cat) and I spotted Wesley, my hound x, and my heart healed! I took him home! Charlie, border x was a country dump and I found him on the road, frozen and emaciated, just a little white puff in the snow, so off to the vet and then home where he has kept us busy with vet visits (porcupines, barb wire and blackberry thorns) should have named him "Cash" as he has cost us around 7000 in vet bills! but he has the best personality!
well I have rambled enough, and not even about molossers!! sorry! lol I look forward to meeting everyone!

Hello,
I am a long time Mastiff lover, I found my first Mastiff when I moved out on my own at 16 years old-I rescued a 5 month old Bullmastiff puppy...

Hello,
I am a long time Mastiff lover, I found my first Mastiff when I moved out on my own at 16 years old-I rescued a 5 month old Bullmastiff puppy from a breeder in Eastern Ontario-I went with a friend who was looking into purchasing from the breeder. When I saw this puppy who was in their house. They said he was cheap and could leave right away because he had problems they were unwilling to fix (some breeder they were-takes pride in what they breed!). I paid $500 for a beautiful puppy who once I took him to the vet had a hernia the size of a adult males fist-My vet said he has never in his 30 years as a vet seen a hernia that big. I fixed him up and he was they most loyal beloved dogs I ever had. He had many health problem over his life due to the rough start and sadly he passed away in 2007. He was the ripe old age of 11 years old. He was my first baby and the reason for my love of the breed(s).

I now along with my husband and children have 3 dogs and take in big dogs and find them homes, no money exchanges hands. I just get the reward of finding a good home for so many large dogs, that people adopt or purchase and discard because they are big, untrained or don't have the time once the puppy phase is over.

I currently have 3 family dogs, a female Italian Mastiff (cane corso) who is 3 years old as well as a female German Sheppard/border Collie mix (14 years old) and a female Rottweiler puppy (9 months). I also have a rescued 1 year old Male Newfoundland dog who is about to go to his forever home this weekend as well who I have had for 5 months and have finally found him a good home in the country.

I found Dakota (my Cane Corso) on a website as a 8 week old puppy who was needing a home. They said because they didn't realize when they got the puppy it would be so big! (I am not sure how small they thought a mastiff would be) She wasn't even 6 weeks old when they purchased her (Again another great breeder). She has the typical Mastiff personality (which is one of my favorite things about the breed) She loves to be at your side on your toes in just about everything you do. If by chance you walk inside or out and she is not with you she will sing you a song until you remember to let her in! Because she left her mother too early and the breeder fed them home made dog food, she could not keep regular dog food down, it upset her stomach so bad. I beleive this is why the people gave her up! For the first few months we made her meals (ground chicken or turkey, rice, vegetables, oatmeal and pumpkin) All cooked and stored in fridge at our vets reccommendation. It worked she stopped getting sick all the time, but that is extremely expensive and very time consumming. She was not gaining the right amount of weight and not getting the right nutrition puppies should have. After tests done on her we found she was allergic to one of the most common ingredients in dog food, so we put her on gastro food designed by vets and the sickness stopped. She is healthly and gained more weight then the vets ever thought she would. She is a small 109 lbs but I am just happy to have a health girl. She is mommy's girl.

I seem to be drawn to the breed for many reasons and will and already have enjoyed this site with all the information and a place to talk about my beautiful doggies.

Hi, and I hope to see a lot of different mastiffs. I have two English Mastiffs. My female is Molly, and she weighs 133 lbs. I got her when she was 10 months old, at that time she was abused and I took her in,and she only weighed 93 lbs. she is now 2 1/2 yrs old and weighs 133 lbs. and does a lot better around people. she is still nervous around new people. and when I have new friends over to the house I have them sit on the couch and wait for her to go to them. don't force the dog to them. Then I have a Male English Mastiff which I got him at age 7 weeks old. his name is Goliath, he is now 6 months old on the 20th of August. and he weighs 97lbs. as of yesterday. His dad weighed 230lbs and his mom weighed 180lbs. so I am sure he will be over 200lbs. between the both of them I go through a 44 lb bag of dog food a week. Is that normal? I have tried to post pictures of them but it hasn't worked yet. I haven't figured out how to do it. but I will. lol. well enough of my chatting. hope to hear from u soon. anyone. thanks.

Just wanted to say hi and introduce myself. We are the new owners in the English Mastiff line, I have raised other dogs before but this line will be the largest for me. I recently bought a 5 month, 65 lb female Fawn Brindle... very sweet and lovable animal with a giant heart. I look forward to years of companionship from her.. Her name is Rhea...

Thanks again!
