Hello there, I'm very happy I found this Mastiff Forum ! we just got our beautiful 10 week old English Mastiff Leo, being a first time Mastiff owner I'm sure I'll learn alot from this site. I was wondering, with this breed are they not as active as other breed puppies ? my guy likes to go out side and he'll walk around a little then plop himself down. I'm use to puppies being very hyper and running everywhere from other breeds we've had in the past. Thanks in advance.

Greetings, my wife and I are the parents of a 10 week old twanny colored Neopolitan Mastiff pup named Claudia.

First the bad, the pup was an impulse buy, so her parents health is unknown. The wife always wanted a mastiff and I have a hard time telling her no, so when Nikki saw Claudia it was game over.

Now on to the good,

Claudia has been to the vet and seems to be in good health and confirmation. She is crazy smart for a 10 week old puppy and learned her name and has begun to learn the come command in 2 days. She is rapidly bonding with my wife, the 3 kids, 3 other dogs and 2 cats as well as myself. Each day she is more inquisitive. Her potty training proceeds apace mostly good but some slip ups. She is also in a forever home, we are home owners and once an animal is in, its in. We have a geriatic pitbull, a severly inbred lab (found in a ditch by our house) who needed stomach surgery after injesting pine needles, a lab mix we had to nurse back to health with a syringe fed diet of honey, milk and egg, and a flea allegic half hairless cat. The other cat is the only normal member of the family with 4 legs.

The biggest problem right now is convincing Claudia to eat kibble and to take to her crate.

Part of the good is after I bought her I swarmed the net looking for information on the breed. I got a good chuckle when I found out about the slobber, gas and other bodily functions of the breed, the wife hates slimly, stinky or drooly. But she agreed to take care of Claudia and so far has been hard at work living up to it. I think with time, drool will be like baby poop, just one of those things.Me, I don't mind it, dogs are dogs and I have a pit and 2 labs.

Besides the vet and post-purchase net research we've also gone out and bought her quality toys and ropes, crate, quality food etc. We''ve also begun teaching her where she can sleep and sit, researched training classes etc.

Ok back to the kibble issue...

She doesn't like it, hopefully she will grow into it.

Our plan is to use a mix of natures choice large breed puppy and natures choice large breed adult both are lower protein premium foods. This should be about half her diet by weight (adjusted upwards as she grows). This should not risk her growing too fast. To this will be added liberal portions of mixed veggies and a daily raw egg. I've read that using low grain kibble with mixed veggies like this can seriously cut down the risk of GDV. Its not a BARF diet, but hopefully it will let her reach her potential.

To keep it short I am a proud owner of 3 of the greatest dogs in the world. I am referring to Cogniac my only male. Just found out he may have cancer. They have him on Antibiotics and when I'm through with them if he hasn't cleare up they will do a biopsy. Can anyone look at these pictures and tell me if you have seen anything like it. They start off as little bumps under his skin, and then out of all of them 3 of them turned into what seem like blood blisters, as you can see his on his back legs where the bumps were the hair is not growing back. I am trying to not go off the deep end over this and don't act worried around him when I check him out daily:pray:. They don't seem to bother him at all. But these dogs especially Cogniac are my entire life and it will be a tough one to deal with if worse comes to worst. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Executive Health August 30, 2010, 14:00 EST
Dog Gene Offers Clues to Rare Human Brain Disease
Mutation may be similar in both species, study suggests

MONDAY, Aug. 30 (HealthDay News) -- Scientists who discovered a gene mutation that causes a fatal neurodegenerative disease in American Staffordshire (Pit Bull) terriers say the same gene may also be linked to a similar, rare fatal brain disease in humans.

The discovery of the gene associated with a variant of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs) -- a family of diseases that lead to mental and motor deterioration and death -- may lead to improved screening and diagnosis of the disease in dogs. It may also be an early first step in developing a cure for NCLs in both dogs and humans, according to the multinational team of researchers.

In American Staffordshire terriers, also known as American Pit Bull Terriers, the disease causes mental and motor deterioration leading to death. Adult-onset NCL affects one of every 400 registered American Staffordshire terriers, according to research team member Dr. Natasha Olby, an associate professor of neurology at North Carolina State University.

"The disease became so prevalent because it was a recessive disease with late onset. Carriers of a single copy of the mutated gene never develop symptoms, and dogs with two copies of the gene might not show symptoms until five or six years of age, so the mutation was able to take hold in the breeding population," she explained in a university news release.

Genetic analysis revealed the location of the specific gene and an entirely new mutation that has not been reported in people.

In humans, NCLs such as Batten disease mostly affect children, but there is an adult-onset form called Kufs' disease that causes gradual death of brain neurons, resulting in vision loss, epilepsy, loss of coordination and dementia, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

The unique nature of the mutation in dogs means that researchers can now conduct tests to determine if the same mutation is responsible for Kufs' disease in humans, according to Olby.

"The canine disease is a good model of the adult human form of the disease. We hope that this discovery will provide insight into the development of this disease," she said.

The study was published in a recent issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Hello everyone!

I am a very loving mother to two Mastiffs. I have a Bull Mastiff who will be 3 next month. I also have a 10 month old French Mastiff. I joined this forum because I need help. My French Mastiff (Hayden) is a little bit of a terror. I love her with all of my heart but she just does NOT seem to understand the concept of potty training and she chews everything!! From coffee tables, to rugs, to couches!! I feel as though I have tried everything but she is just not "getting it." I thought Hayden was doing this out of frustration but, I just don't think thats the case anymore. I walk her everyday, at least once. I have a large backyard for her to run in. She has more toys than a child. Is it normal for her to be 10 months old and still doing these things? I have tried crate training her since I got her at 8 weeks but, I stopped using the crate about a month ago because she would potty in the cage every time I left. I came home to a hole in my leather couch today - the crate is coming back! =] What else do I do? I will take ANY advice!

Thank you.

P.S. I love this forum so far, especially the pictures! =]

Hello,
I'm new to this site, and very excited to talk to other mastiff owners. I live in a small town and not alot of mastiff owners around. I have 3 english mastiffs. Well, I guess I really have 10 mastiffs right now. My female just had 7 beautiful puppies. I do have a question for anyone out there that can help. I have a 8 month old female that was purchased with the intent to breed that has recentley been diagnosed with chin pyoderma. My vet gave me some surgical scrub (chlorhexidine) to clean the chin with. And told me to try (ha ha ha) and keep the chin dry. I was concerned that this may be a genetic/hereditary concern in regards to breeding, but he didn't seem to think so. Any comments or info re: this would be very helpful. thanks

Another dog fight is brewing in Pennsylvania.

Animal-rights advocates are supporting House Bill 1254, which would outlaw the continuous chaining -- called tethering -- of dogs.

The effort is supported by the Humane Society of the United States, according to Sarah Speed, the Humane Society's Pennsylvania state director.

"It's a very hot issue that's getting a lot of attention right now,"

Speed said. "I would like to see a bill that goes farther. ... We'd like to see some changes made. I've been having ongoing meetings with the House Judiciary Committee to work on it."

The proposal would outlaw tethering between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., with 15-minute exemptions.

Currently, state law requires tethered dogs to have available food, water and an airtight box. But the law has no provision for extreme weather conditions, according to Melissa Smith, executive director of the York County SPCA.

"Unequivocally, I am supportive of the idea that a dog should not be permitted to live its life tethered to a box," Smith said. "We all know dogs crave companionship, and to tie a dog out is torturous. It's like making someone live as a hermit for his entire life. It's so frustrating and so sad."

'Miserable existence': Speed said there are other problems with tethering as well.

"Often you find imbedded collars in tethering cases," she said. "It's really a neglect issue. ... For a social animal, it's just a miserable existence."

Tethered animals are at greater risk of attack from other dogs and wild animals such as coyotes, Speed said.

They also are more likely to be aggressive, according to Speed, because a tethered dog can't make a choice when its "flight or fight" instinct kicks in.

"If a dog is left alone and unsocialized and a toddler walks by, it's a scary thing," she said.

But both Speed and Smith say the bill needs some tweaking, and state Rep. James Casorio Jr., D-Westmoreland, agrees.

New proposal: Casorio plans to introduce a new tethering bill, hopefully during the current legislative session, according to Michael Herzing of the House Democratic Communications Office.

Casorio's bill would protect dogs 24 hours a day, as opposed to just certain times of the day. The bill would restrict tethering "to an appropriate number of hours and would propose further limits on tethering during temperature and other weather extremes," according to a news release from Herzing's office.

The bill would also propose a tiered system of penalties for violators, ranging from written warnings for first-time offenders to possible fines, jail time and even forfeiture of their dogs for repeated convictions.

Input: Casorio is still working on tweaking the language of his proposed bill, Herzing said, adding that "everybody has input," from animal-rights groups to dog owners.

Casorio was the prime sponsor of Pennsylvania's 2008 puppy-mill law, and noted that its passage provided "important new protections" for dogs.

"Putting reasonable tethering restrictions in state law is the next step we need to take," he said.

Thirteen states either ban or restrict tethering of dogs, according to the Animal Law Coalition.

Three of those states -- California, Nevada and Texas -- restrict the amount of time a dog can be tethered per day, according to Laura Allen, executive director of the Animal Law Coalition. The other 10 states restrict the manner of tethering, she said.

Frustration: Smith said cruelty investigators can't always do what they feel is morally or ethically right for a dog, because they can only work within the confines of the law -- something the public often doesn't understand.

"That's one of the situations that causes us the most frustration," Smith said. "Because we see these dogs that have what Pennsylvania law requires them to have, but they don't have what dogs want most, which is companionship. Therein lies the struggle for us, because we can only go by what the law says."

Humane police officers can certainly talk to owners about the hazards of constant tethering, Smith said, and urge them to reconsider or to give up their dog. But it doesn't always work.

"At some point it becomes a power struggle," she said. "They look at the dog as a possession, not as a living animal with needs."

Hi everyone.

My SO's co-worker is rehoming a Japanese Mastiff (Tosa Inu) pup and we are most likely going to get her in the next couple weeks (before the end of the month).

We've both had rescues before (mostly labs and german shepherd/mixes), but this is a different dog than the lab mixes we are used to.

Is there anything we should do different to prepare for her? We already have a vet and a kennel that we respect. My good friend is the kennel owner, so I know I can always ask questions of her.

Just wanted to get some ideas from people that are around Mastiff breeds a lot.

Thanks!

Hello folks! happy to be here! I am a 35 yr old female who absolutley luvs molossers! I have been owned in the past by 3 Presa Canarios and I am looking forward to being owned again one day by another lapdog/bedhog! I currently have been adopted by a bloodhound/shepard mix and a border/spitz mix and I luv them dearly! I am looking for the right molosser to fit into our family, from the right breeder! So far no luck! I am ever hopeful though!
My last Presa was hit by a car and was killed instantly (thank god) His name was Chester! he was soo sweet and gentle! Before him was Rocks and Opal. Opal passed at the age of 12, quietly at home and Rocks was 14 when she passed. So I didn't have any more fur babies for a long time, but then I was at a shelter witha friend (getting a cat) and I spotted Wesley, my hound x, and my heart healed! I took him home! Charlie, border x was a country dump and I found him on the road, frozen and emaciated, just a little white puff in the snow, so off to the vet and then home where he has kept us busy with vet visits (porcupines, barb wire and blackberry thorns) should have named him "Cash" as he has cost us around 7000 in vet bills! but he has the best personality!
well I have rambled enough, and not even about molossers!! sorry! lol I look forward to meeting everyone!
