Protection training a Cane Corso?

We are considering having our can corso go through protection training (assuming she passes the temperament test) but we have no experience with this, and I also have small children in the house, so I wonder how safe it really is.

I would love some more experienced opinions on the matter!

I do not have any of my dogs protection trained but from those I have talked to these dogs have the highest level of control and have no issues being with children. It was explained to me this way, all dogs bite, when dogs are trained in protection they are trained when it is appropriate and they are under the control of their owner/handler at all times. As long as you have a stable dog that is capable of undergoing that type of training I don't think there will be an issue but there is a working Cane Corso page on Facebook that you can join and discuss this there as I am sure there are many that have kids while training their dogs for protection.

Yeap what Mary said. Dogs are trained when to bite and more importantly learn control.

I have heard they do well in Schutzhund and French Ring training. I personally don't have experience with either...but we are also considering protection training from a local academy that trains Belgian Malinois and GSD for the Santa Cruz Police Department. I have been in contact with them and they are excited to test out a CC...

Now that I think about it...I'm certain there is a thread on this forum about a CC that just started Schutzhund training. The owner has posted a few pics...young dog just starting as I said, but pretty cool.

For a protection sport I don't think it matters if your corso is friendly. It is essentially a game to them for the most part. This doesn't mean that more serious dogs can't do it but it doesn't mean that a social dog can't do it either. Now a dog that is PP trained tends to have more defensive drive and doesn't normally do as well at protection sports as they do not consider it a game, they don't often give chase at least not much of it. They will bring it if the fight comes to them but they are more about protecting their person and immediately around them. Both serve their purposes but if you have a dog with not much prey drive then the first thing to do will be to try and build that up when he is young, it is my understanding that most dogs don't get worked in defensive drive until they are older.

I grew up with two Dobes that were ppd trained all commands were in German. They were the best dogs ever. My sister and i tortured those poor dogs from dressing them up to painting their nails. For the first 8 yrs of my life one dobe slept w me and one w my sis. As long as your dog is stable you will be fine

There are so many things that go into training a dog in protection. The first is having a stable temperament but that is difficult to determine in a pup. In a pup building prey drive and/or food drive is the key. You have to understand what drive the dog is in, in order to properly train it.

Thank you all your your replies. We have several months to decide before they will even do the temperament test for her to qualify.

One question, she is technically a "show" dog, will this affect her chances of being a good protection dog?

Assuming a dog possesses the traits for a protection dog it does not matter if it is a "show" dog. A Cane Corso is naturally a protector so the natural ability is there it is just developing it. Right now work with your pup on basic OB as that is the foundation of protection work. You must be able to turn on and turn off the dog.

Do you mean “protection training” or “protection sports”? There is a big difference between the two. Regardless, IF you have a balanced dog with clear mind, the dog should be fine in the house and good with kids. I have an IPO titled male, who is very high drive and very dominant, but who also lives in a house with a free run 1lb ferret and adores her, and is very social with visitors, after proper introduction. It’s up to you to recognize how stable your pup is and to socialize properly.
As far as “show dog” goes, you really will need to test the drive of your dog. Some Corsos now, unfortunately, have very mellow temperaments (not characteristic to the breed) and will not make good protection dogs or sporting dog. Find a good trainer and evaluate your dog. How active is your pup? Does it like chasing things and playing tug? How confident is it? To tell you the truth, I can maybe think of 2 dogs in north America that are titled in both protection sports and confirmation ring, and I am not referring to the Obedience test, but to more advanced levels. Most people who seriously train in protection sport view confirmation ring as a waste of a perfectly good training weekend (lol), this is why so few IPO / Ring Corsos are confirmation champions.

What lines is your pup from and how old is it? If you plan to do protection training, its not a bad idea to start some basic OB things early on, like bonding exercises, etc

Have you ever seen a French Ring Trail? Corso will not be able to compete past FR1 due to the height of the jump but IPO - yes

She is lazy, and has no drive won't even chase a ball, bird, or chipmunk and she won't come for even a treat...

Maybe she's not cut out for this. Lol

I really have no idea how to answer this question! She doesn't exersize too much, but we do walk/hike the property with her. She is on TOTW but won't eat it unless we mix a raw egg on the top. We are thinking of switching to blue buffalo once this bag is nearly finished. I'll look for a club, but were kind of in bfe, so I don't know if we have any. I honestly haven't figured out what drives this pup yet!
