As some of you know, I volunteer for our local animal shelter. One of the things that I do is help to run Play Yards (We are the only 100% volunteer run play yard in the country.)

If a dog fails the Shelter's Behavioral Evaluation for dog on dog aggression, the staff asks us to try them in the Yard with a muzzle. The vast majority of dogs that we try in the Yard are not aggressive. Most likely they are freaked out by being in the shelter, being on lead, and/or meeting dogs in that environment. The Yard, gives them the opportunity to shows us who they really are in a less stressful situation where they have more freedom.

This little girl was one that we were asked to try in the Yard. Unfortunately, she did did display aggression to the dogs we tried to introduce her to. She was slated to be PTS. My amazing Yard co-volunteers did not give up. We tried her on a different day with different dogs. We gave her information on what is and isn't appropriate. We praised her up and down for making good decisions, and we kept at it. With a little direction she got it!!

Long story short, she was set to be euthanized (paperwork pulled and name on the list). NOW, she is on the adoption floor!!

I really just wanted to share my joy. Thank you for listening. :)

That is spectacular! As hard as working and volunteering in a shelter is, it's the success stories that keep you doing it. Very nice job and she's a beautiful girl. I hope she finds the perfect home.

I think because it can be so hard experiences like this are extra special! I just can't stop smiling! When she dropped into her first playbow, the entire Yard staff cried. Thank you all for celebrating with us!

How awesome! Made me tear up too. Lol
Great job! I hope this beautiful girl finds her home quick.

That is awesome. I am so happy for her and everyone that was involved in making with possible. Most shelter's would have written her off as soon as she showed signs of aggression. It's a shame because they poor animals worlds are turned upside down and thrown into a environment that they aren't used to and are expected to be on their best behavior. All of the shelters i know of tell you to give a animal you adopt two weeks to adjust to your home yet those shelters are also the ones to be so quick to put them on the euth list. I do a lot of networking on facebook, Trying to find homes for these guys before they are destroyed and i have to say nyc shelters and a particular shelter in ca is by far the worst i've seen. It is said nyc gives potential adopters a hard time adopting some of the dogs and have laughed and hung up on people that were crying on the phone because they were giving them a hard time about adopting them when they had only minutes to spare. I have also heard this shelter gets a certain amount of money for each animal they murder. A certain shelter in Ca has a leaking roof, People have asked to donate to fix but were told no. They hose down the kennels with the dogs as well as any bedding inside in the dead of winter, Most of these kennels are outside and even the ones inside are not heated and when someone offered to fix that it was also turned down. When these dogs get sick they immediately need rescue or are destroyed. It's sickening so kudos to this shelter for actually being in it for the animals.

Great job for caring enough for the helpless/voiceless pups! You deserve lots of hugs and puppy kisses!

Thank you everyone! It is truly a team effort of the staff and volunteers! Just so blessed to be able to do this "work." Her name is Oreo and she was surrendered by her family. We will make sure she gets a great home!

...All of this because of my Mastiffs and a desire to give back to the organization that gave me my loves. <3
