"a dogs purpose"

Wow. This is not acceptable handling. I would have gone to see this movie too. I read the book not long after I lost my Ed and I loved it. I would recommend reading the book. Probably with a box of tissues.

Yes- this has been all over Facebook, and the internet----and I just can't (won't) bring myself to watch the video. How disturbing-- sorry about the fact that I won't be seeing the film, either.

Some people are saying this might not have happened during the shooting of that particular movie and it is being investigated.

I am horrified that this happened in my city. Shame on them. Seriously. This is so NOT okay.

What on earth were they trying to get this poor dog to do?
I don't get it....

I don't either! Is there a water scene in the film I presume and they are trying to get the dog in to swim so they can shoot?

So cruel. "Just gotta throw him in." Er. No. But how about we throw you in?!

Outrageous.

I read on one news site that the person who was there to ensure the animals safety has been suspended during the investigation so I believe that it did happen while filming the movie. There is no excuse for that in today's world of digital enhancements and capabilities. That trainer should be blackballed for allowing that to happen to their charge and the person who was supposed to be supervising needs to be unemployed as well!

I do hope that this doesn't make people boycott reading the book. They are two separate things. I thought the book was very good and I think most dog lovers would like it.

So I was reading up more on this and I read that the video is actually shot across two different days. The statement released said that the day the dog was afraid to go in they were never forced to and that they didn't shoot the film until a different day when the dog was ready and not reactive any longer. In any case they are investigating.

I can't imagine any trainer would force the dog to perform if they were uncomfortable because that could inhibit them from doing similar scenes in the future if they have a bad experience. It is just counterintuitive. Show dogs are working dogs and they will do their job well and consistently if the experience remains positive. I would think that any trainer would know that.

I really do hope they find this was a case of misrepresentation. We also don't know who the person saying "throw the dog in" was. It could have been some idiot bystander giving their opinion.

In any case as Boxergirl says the book is excellent and should not be judged by what did or didn't have in the filming of the movie adaptation. Usually the book is better than the movie anyways! So read the book and you won't miss out or be supporting any possible bad stuff. :-D

Boxergirl - Did you read the sequel yet? I am in the middle of it! So good and another tear jerker I think. <3

Oh I also read another great book for dog lovers recently but it is also one that will totally get you emotionally involved and make you furious at various points. I have to hunt it down so I can share the title. I'm not sure where I placed the book after reading it.

I've seen statements by the company they got the dog from , the producer , the author , and the Winnipeg humane society , they all sound different to me ....... the producer said he reviewed footage from earlier that day and the dog was happily doing the stunt ....... you'd think it'd be easy enough to put that footage out there ? I would think there were more than one of their cameras filming all the attempts at the stunt ? considering how bad this press is , how much money this may cost them , i'd think they'd inundate the web with their footage of the dog happily doing the stunt .......

they could have hired a professional dog expert and took some time to train the dog to do the shooting... the way they handled it was really cruel and stupid.

I will reserve judgement until the full truth comes out, I am not going to agree with one thing PETA advocates for until I know it is fact. I deal with enough of their garbage for doing things like being a breeder, docking/cropping, etc... all making me an abuser in PETA's eyes. Things are not always what they seem, especially when they want you to think the worst.
