Sad day

All of my fellow Bullmastiff (any dog for that matter) know they are part of our family. I had two bullmastiff's andy and timmy both under two and they went into to get neutered and my older of the two who was 23 months old made it through the surgery and then passed away that night from either an embolism or reaction to the anesthesia.. It has been a sad two weeks in our house.. HE was the perfect dog but he had a great life with us for the 23 months we had him.
My question is has anyone gone through a loss of a dog while and how long did the other dog grieve for? Andy our 18 months old bullmastiff has only known his brother since we brought him home and now he gone and Andy is lost. It's really sad, but andy gets all the attention and extra attention at that now.. It's just heartbreaking to loose a dog so young when we thought we would have a full decade with both boys together.
Andy advice on a grieving dog?

I am so sorry to hear this, it has to be very hard on Andy and your family.

My Great Dane was raised with our senior Doberman, Hannah, who passed away late last year. He didn't seem sad, but after a couple weeks he became very anxious. We ended fostering another dog about a month later to keep him company, and after she was adopted by another family we found the perfect Doberman to add to our family. Some dogs do fine as an only dog, but our Dane was deteriorating very quickly so being an only dog wasn't an option for him.

So very sorry to hear about you losing your bullmastiff that way. It's never easy, but losing one so young is heartbreaking. :(

Dogs grieve, for sure. I hope some quiet time together, lots of walks and maybe some new routines will help Andy to find himself again.

I know it takes me a while to get out from under the shadow of grief, and dogs do pick up on that. I'm not saying to ignore your own process of grieving, just to recognize that you are on this journey together.
I'm glad you and Andy have each other right now.

Sorry to hear that but unfortunely it happens and you cant control it..i lost my 3 years old boerboel 2 months after his broken nail operation from a probably heart failure... I was broken and still am never will recover from that but i have to keep strong because of my new little boerboel ,who is also a cure for my broken heart. So maybe you could consider getting new pup , that will keep busy you and your other dog just like it did help me with mine sorrow..

This is so true! Our Diesel was severely depressed after Cerberus passed. He wasn't himself at all. When we finally added Kahlua to the family it was a night and day difference.

I am so sorry for your loss! I have so much anxiety anytime one of my dog's has to go into a surgery for this very reason. As for the time it takes to grieve I think it is completely dependent on the dog. I don't really think there is a one size fits all answer to that question. My thoughts are with you and Andy. <3

I'm so very sorry for your loss.

I've had some dogs that were okay in a short time and one that wasn't. Al has severe generalized anxiety and Leo was his rock. When Leo passed suddenly from a cardiac event in our home it really messed Al up. I ended up finally putting him on anxiety meds when he didn't stop whining for a few weeks. I knew we wouldn't have Leo long, so I had already planned to bring a puppy home. It just happened that Leo passed two days before we brought Roy home. In hindsight, Roy helped me with my grief but he didn't help Al. I was wrong to think that Al needed another friend. In our case all Al ever needed was Leo. And that's why I adopted Ella when Roy was only 9 months old. Roy desperately wanted companionship and Al still didn't want him.

I guess I so often hear the advice to bring in another dog that I wanted to give another opinion. From now on I will wait, at least several months. Maybe foster, like Scorning did to see if bringing in another dog will be beneficial.

Sorry for your loss. Regardless of the age, it's always heartbreaking to lose a dog.

Well although i miss my Timmy so much every day... We decided to adopt a new puppy... His name is Gus and he is an 11 month old St. Bernard.. Andy loves him and they are great friends and hit it off from the start. He has adapted very well and is part of the family in only 7 short days. I'm glad we were able to find andy a friend and give Gus his forever home. Gus has not had the best 11 months of life so now he will live an awesome life with us. P.S. St. Bernards are great dogs.

Sorry for your loss - happy for your gain!!

It sounds silly, but we adopted a cat when we lost a companion pup to our Sassy. The kitty became her new best friend.
