Shipping Puppies

So recently a GSD was supposed to be shipped to Kansas and ended up in Japan. There have also been several dog deaths that plague the airlines...
I've never had a dog shipped before, and don't really know what to expect. I've read up on it, and it seems relatively safe, but still I'm a bit nervous about it.... So I was wondering if some of you wonderful people would share your experience with having your pups shipped to you.

All I know is that if you do ship your puppy don't use United. If you look at the records United has the worst track record with this and that has been going on for years with them.

Thanks Nik.
The breeder is taking care of all the shipping arrangements. I'm pretty sure he is using Safe Pet. I will have to ask him which airline is typically used.

I would strongly recommend urging the breeder to avoid using United. They have a bad track record not only for losing pets but for killing them as well. If you do a quick google you will bring up lots of articles about this. Here is one that came to the top of a search I just did: http://onemileatatime.boardingarea.com/2018/03/14/united-animal-deaths/

Specifically go to the link and scroll down to the chart. It lists all the airlines and how many animals have died on their flights, the number of animals transported, the number of deaths and the rate of deaths. United is sooo far above the rest on killing animals that it is ridiculous.

That is some pretty bad statistics!

I think one of our members, Angelbears, had her boy shipped to her. Unfortunately I haven't seen her in ages. If I remember correctly she paid someone to be a kind of courier so her boy could ride in a seat. Does anyone else remember that?

That sounds familiar to me. I miss Angelbears.

A courier sounds awesome!

I have shipped pups in the past. Nationally and internationally. I have never had a major issue. All pups arrived safe and healthy.

I did normally pay extra for a stop over service where they were supposed to clean out the cage and make sure the puppy was fine and clean though.

The only issue I ever had was the cage being dirty and didn't appear to be cleaned as promised.

No matter who gets used you kind of have 0 control over the process. So dont worry too hard. Should be fine.

You can get people that will fly with a puppy tagged on a ticket and can be cheaper if you are doing International. Also depending on the breed the shipping can be steep if they are considered "dangerous" so require specialized crates, often making ground transport with a quality pet carrier a better idea. We have shipped puppies and adults when we have had to but it isn't a preference for us.

The Breeder said he's never had any issues either, and he ships national and international as well. I just got a little nervous with all the recent attention the airlines are getting in regards to shipping dogs. Thanks for sharing , it made me feel better about him being shipped. :)

I agree I would rather not have him shipped. I would rather go and get him myself, but we are quite far from Sacramento. I figured it would be more stressful driving 2-3 days then a 6 hour flight.

Maybe all the attention that has been focused on the recent incidents is a good thing for you. You'd think the airlines would be super alert and make sure to do things right. Six hours isn't a terrible flight. I'm sure he'll be okay. Let us know the day and time. We'll be happy to worry with you.

Thanks Boxergirl, I will definitely keep y'all posted. And your right, maybe with all the scrutinization on the airlines, it may cause them to be more careful.

I believe most of those problems were folks flying with their animals on the same flight , either in the cabin or cargo ? as opposed to an animal shipping service ........... I've used petsafe without ever having an issue ....... I've brought dogs in from Europe on klm , I'd drive 7 hrs to eliminate any need to transfer flights ....... if your worried about it , have it shipped to the nearest airport with a direct flight and go pick the pup up , just make sure you get there ........ I would highly recommend against a courier service , i'm personally familiar with way more disaster using a courier service as opposed to commercial airlines ......... I know of one commercial airline problem , a bulldog that overheated on the ground between flights , the dog was unhealthy ........ I think animal shipping problem numbers would need to be shown in problems per 100 or 1000 animals shipped to get an accurate comparison .....

Thanks for the info. Baton Rouge is closer to us, but we've decided to have him shipped to New Orleans so that he can get a straight flight. New Orleans is only 1 hour from us, so not a problem. He will be using pet safe, so glad to hear you have had good experience with it.

My sister has shipped a couple of pups out to Alaska with no issues. She crated the pup with his or her blanket supplied some food. Frozen raw diet...and sent them... The people they were shipped too met the pup at the airport.

Where is yours coming from?
