Elevated Dog Beds

Does any of you use elevated dog beds for the heavy guys (150+)? I did find some threads on here from a few years ago, so products might have changed in the meantime. What type/brands would you recommend?

Sure. My dogs use a queen sized double pillow top bed currently. This also happens to be the same bed we sleep in. ;-) lol

I do know that a few members built their own beds for their dogs and we are seriously considering trying to build an add on to our bed (which we will probably upgrade to a king) after we move. I saw some great ideas on Pinterest for little shelf beds built off the side or end of the bed. Kahlua will probably choose to stay up next to us but I think Diesel would take advantage of his own space if it was directly adjacent to us still. I know you can buy that sort of thing but we would probably DIY it.

That‘s a very creative solution.

Regardless, my EM loves to sleep on the floor. We have a combination of hardwood and carpet, but he doesn‘t seem to care much. I‘m always concerned when he lets himself fall on the hard floor. It sounds horrible.

Well, one of our members, who I haven't seen come around in a long time, has two Great Danes. They wanted to sleep with her, and her solution was to buy not one, but two king sized beds and butt them up against each other, that way the big boys get enough room and aren't separated from their mother.

Oh...and Bailey sleeps on the bed with mommy. Daddy had skulked off to the little bedroom where he can watch tv all night and not be pushed out of the bed by the dog. Bailey anchors herself with me at her back and pushes for all it's worth to get Dad to go to the other room. Bailey doesn't like to share her mommy or her bed at night.

I have a kuranda bed and two similar beds from a local dane breeder. You can see one in my profile picture. My dogs don't like to lie directly on them inside, but like something soft on them. But they prefer being elevated to a bed that is just on the ground.

Outside them lay on them without any cover. The steel Kuranda held up well even with a 200lb foster English Mastiff. The plastic breeder cots can hold my 140lb dane and 65lb doberman together.

The place we board our dogs has the same beds and both our dogs sleep on one together when they are there. To be clear they provide them with two but the dogs choose to sleep together.

Thank you. I ordered the largest one they have (50x35). According to the description it supports up to 250lbs, so that‘s probably the best solution (expensive however).

We have Coolaroos... same concept as the Kuranda.
They do stretch over time, but the covers are easy to replace. We just replaced the covers last year, after 9 years.

I love taking them camping - we're in the Pacific NW (blue tarp camping region), and it's nice to keep their beds out of the puddles.
The brown dog (Dane/lab mix) is 100lbs, plus the kid (60-80?? not my kid, so no clue as to weight). At one time we had 3 kids with that dog on the bed... he was a kid-magnet - The other one (65lb Bulldog/boxer mix) not so much.

He does like it, however, he doesn‘t sleep on it for long periods. Unfortunately, the hard kitchen floor seems to be more comfortable

Lol, probably cause it's cool. Thinking about getting one. But with the crate taking up space, I don't want to get it and he not use it.

she's got my bed & the couch, I think that is elevated enough. Plus, does like the cool floor as well.

That‘s a good point. He uses his crate during the night (it‘s open and he just walks in) and the bed during the day.

I have been looking at the kuranda beds for my pup. As expensive as they are I want to get one that will fit him when he is grown. I think the largest one is rated for up to 250lbs. My little guys father and both grandfathers are 250+lbs at a healthy physique. My only concern is if my boy gets that big and my 25lb beagle gets on it with him the bed will destroyed.

You are correct about the 250lbs. My wife (~125 lbs) was sitting on the bed when our EM (~160 lbs) was on it as well. The bed didn‘t seem to be at risk of breaking, but that was for short periods each time. However, it should in theory support both of your dogs assuming that your EM is going to be 250lbs. Either way, it is probably the most robust bed that you can find.

We are probably going to go ahead and get one. Even if he does get that heavy and it the ed eventually breaks. He will have a good place to lay down until then. We allow him on the sofa now. But he doesn't stay there very long.
