Chicken sensitivity question

Lettie has a sensitivity to food and treats that contain chicken. It makes her stools loose. The food we buy has a line of “freeze dried raw food” we like to buy the beef one and use it as treats instead of meals. I’ve read that most dogs only have a sensitivity to chicken when it’s processed in food. Does anyone know if a “freeze dried raw” chicken would cause a reaction? Does this count as processed or raw? I want to buy the chicken one, but I’m not sure if I should? If it matters, it’s from openfarmpet.com

As far as I know, it would be mostly limited to processed food (kibble). We have had lose stools on chicken based kibble, too. However, we have never had any issues with boiled chicken breast. On the freeze dried raw food, I believe it depends on the additional ingredients. We use treats that are freeze dried but 100% beef liver, for example. If the source is 100% protein/organ etc. she might be ok. I guess it‘s a little bit of trial and error. Worst case, I would stay away from chicken. We have had success with beef, pork, fish, and lamb (firm stools).

The only way to be sure would be to try it. Kryten can't have anything that has processed bird (of any type) but he is fine with raw, cooked or dehydrated bird. One of his favorite treats is chicken or duck feet/heads.

Thank you both! I think I’ll buy the chicken freeze dried raw next time and see how she does. Before we knew better, we gave her chicken flavored treats and she LOVED them as a puppy. She went crazy for chicken anything and it was the highest value reward we could find. So I think it’s worth a shot to try the chicken one. If they doesn’t bother her, I’ll have her super high value treats to train with again! :D

I bet she'll be fine with the freeze dried chicken. That food looks really good, btw. If I wasn't feeding so many dogs and other animals I'd be all over it. I'll have to remember it for when I'm down to one or two dogs someday.

I love Open Farm, I’m always suggesting it to people (just ask TylerDurden :p). They send free samples of their other products pretty often when we order from them too. The cost of feeding one mastiff is the only reason I don’t have two !

I can definitely confirm that! ;) Regardless, the food looks good and we are going to try it.

We have now fully settled on Open Farm. By far the best possible dry food we can find in terms of quality, ingredience, taste etc. He loves the Lamb formula, which also contains fish. Thanks again very much @Jarena !! The only thing to watch out for is calories per cup. It‘s much higher than in most lower quality food, but adjusting the feeding amounts works well.

He‘s probably one of the pickiest eaters ever, so I was very happy to see that he actually likes it. No other food out there can really beat the ingredients, sourcing, and manufacturing process.
