hello I have been researching the boerboel and this is a very nice mastiff. I currently have a female Cane Corso. She is awesome great family dog. She has her Good citizenships canine title along with novice parkour title. She loves to work with me. She really loves IPO training. My delimena I want another mastiff was thinking of getting male Corso. But I’m Falling in love with the boerboel. Anyone can give thoughts which way to go? I plan to socialize him just as the Corso. I don’t plan to breed either

I just wanted to kind of bump this up for you in case anyone reading has a suggestion. I remember a year or so ago that you were looking into getting a Corso. How old is your girl now?

Just generally - you say you're falling in love with the Boerboel breed. Have you met any? I would suggest to anyone considering a breed that's new to them to try to meet as many of the new breed as possible. If there are any shows in your area go and make contact with some breeders. Sometimes what you read isn't what you actually get. Boxers are my first love and on paper they seem great, but I know very few people that I would actually thing they would be suitable for.

I’ve always been fascinated with the Boerboel as well and I was lucky enough to meet one at a couple of dog shows. I fell in love with him and his big amazing head! I can’t give any advice, but hopefully someone on the forum can!

My girl is 21 months and is a great dog. I will get another dog either a Cane Corso with drive so can do more IPO type work or a Boerboel and will do scent, and obedience work. Either way I love working and bonding with my dog. I am taking my family to a breeder not too far from us whom appears to have great dogs. Will see for sure. Meeting both parents and some puppies.

I am currently doing extensive research on the breed (something I tend to do) as I am not certain where the corso breed is heading is a road I want to travel down :( so am researching Boerboels and narrowing down breeders by A) dogs I like the look of B) breeders that have and are health testing C) active with their dogs and breeding to standard (this is a bit more trouble since there are I think 4 standards)

I joined several FB groups and have gone through their listing of breeders to view the ones that have sites/FB pages. I also have contacts in rescue and breeding that are double checking everything for me and letting me know if anything shows up in conversations and sites.

Well had the opportunity to meet a very nice breeder in Lancaster PA they are Dekken Boerboel. Wow is all I can say. They have some very athletic muscular beautiful dogs. I met Leo who is in lineage of mizpah alpha and Lola who is daughter of the highest ranking Boerboel Judge. Todd and John are very knowledgeable of the breed. They are family raised. It was a pleasure meeting them. Anyone looking for some great Boerboel check them out. DEKKEN BOERBOEL!!!

That is great! I tend to be cautious with those who are breeding black one as they aren't register-able with most of what would be considered the "responsible" registries. I am familiar with some of the dogs in the pedigrees but didn't see any health testing scores, perhaps they are just don't list them but in a big dogs like these at least the basics for what is common in the breed should be done.

I was under impression (yes there was a time black was not acceptable color) Black Boerboel are now acceptable to Both registers SABBA and NABBA.

They are gorgeous. The black is really stunning, are they short muzzled? I ask because I can only fly in the cooler months with my mastiffs and it looks like their muzzle is more Presa like longer.

They have longer the muzzle. They do not look like presa. They are doing a great job keeping the South Africa Boerboel (big heads, stout with wide chest) look. I was so impressed. The dogs came up to each of us smelled us and went on playing with each other. They were not afraid of us or had the guard protection trait. Very athletic.

I think the SABBS and IBBF/WBBA accepts black as a colour by standard, but that being said I don't think they have any as unacceptable just undesirable. The KUSA, AKC, UKC to my understanding do not accept them.

Don't get me wrong, there is a gorgeous black one named Jericho that I love the look of but the breeder in me just can't see myself buying a dog that isn't in standard. I have no intentions of taking up breeding them, however am thinking I might look at growing out a show/breed potential for a breeder if we could come to an agreement.

It isn't set in stone, I am research like mad (like I always do so it will likely take me a couple years before I am ready to jump in that pool) but I am struggling with where the corso is, where it is heading and what we are starting to be seriously limited by here in Canada. Corso own my heart, and likely will always have a piece I am just not sure I can watch their destruction. :(

Okay don't shoot me avid Boerboel people lol, I am just posting dogs I love the look of...this is solely based off looks! I haven't dug into the standard and learned what I need to be looking for and such, I am currently researching each standard, finding out which breeders are using which. No health testing has me immediately pulling them as a potential (personal preference)

There are likely a couple more breeders on my list but that is the ones I can remember right off.

Ok I too love the Corso. I too love to research and learn. I know more today than a year ago. You can never stop learning. That being said I love working dogs such as the Corso. I am learning the Boerboel is another great working mastiff. I will say this the Black Boerboels they have are simply stunning. Will keep you all posted of a new member comes to our home.

I agree, the blacks certainly are eye catching and I can appreciate them but I think the breeder in me will just not allow me to go that route, even if I am just going to be a pet owner.

I have figured out that I am not going to own a brindle (OMG I am a corso breeder's nightmare, refusing something based on colour) but I just can't like that colour in BB.

You guys have given me the itch, I already showed the wifey. I would go with brindle, black brindle or black. I don't care about AKC or UKC or any of that anymore as I think the whole Corso problem developed from that? I am going to watch vids on obedience with them and see how their muzzles are categorized on flights. They look brutal, more than my Dogue did.

@Kenneth Smith Jr Did you say they are not guard like? I need to watch some vids on their guarding performance also. Very cool.

Steven, they are very guard dogs and protective. Per everyone I spoken to regarding these traits it is naturally instinctive for them to be protective. When we met them I guess they didn’t sense any harm or concerns from us. So they met us and proceeded to do there own thing. Speaking to the breeder and also read they are very good at feeling or sensing the owners emotional state. If the owners are concern they will pick up on it and react accordingly.
