Mastiff hybrids

Hello everyone,
I am new to the site and I would like your insight on something. I research about all types of Mastiffs. Lately I have been finding websites about hybrid mastiffs... Mixing different Mastiffs for a better temperament, health , and size. I even read about a future breed in the making called Molloso Presa Mayo... I was just wondering about your thoughts on hybrid and new breeds of Mastiffs....

I'm not a fan. The Molloso Presa Mayo ... I see nothing that's an improvement on the original breeds. That head looks to be a potential nightmare of breathing problems. The guy doing this? From what I've found he has no knowledge or experience in breeding. He seems to just be a guy that decided to mix some breeds together to make some money or stroke his ego. I see no improvement in that mix of breeds over the individual breeds. It's certainly, in my opinion, not an improvement on the Presa.

If we want healthier dogs then we should support the breeders of dogs that breed knowledgeably and responsibly. There are so many Molosser breeds, I don't see any reason to create a new one. Besides which, it takes many years for a a new breed to run true and be anything more than a mix. In my opinion.

I ran across some info. about what they call the American Mastiff a while back. I was (still am) very leery of mixing breeds; but I contacted the breeder and asked a question regarding their requirement that a puppy buyer must have the pup spayed/neutered at a young age. I forget what age, but way too young. They didn't have a good answer to my questioning the detrimental health effects of young altering – especially on a giant breed.

Anyway, this is from their website. I guess the "American Mastiff" is a mix of an English Mastiff and an Anatolian Mastiff and *supposedly* is a dryer-mouthed dog than an EM"

(below is from Flying W Farms website).

The Flying W Farms American Mastiff (TM) was developed over many years of selective breeding by Fredericka Wagner of Flying W Farms, Piketon, Ohio. The goal was to develop a dog that had the size, temperament, disposition, and the appearance of the Mastiff, but with fewer health problems, and much dryer mouth than other mastiff breeds. This was accomplished by crossing the English Mastiff with the Anatolian Mastiff during the early development of the breed.

American Mastiffs were a thing a while ago. I haven't heard much about them recently. Again, they're a mix rather than a true breed. I remember hearing that there were some temperament issues.

I think it's clear that I'm not a fan of purposely mixing breeds willy nilly. Many years ago there was an experiment to breed natural bobtailed boxers by mixing full boxers with corgis. It worked. Remarkably well, actually. But to my knowledge the boxer world never embraced it because they didn't breed true enough and it wasn't a great improvement on the breed. I don't know if anyone is still doing it, but I'll just take my regular boxer and be happy. I just don't see any real benefit to most of these mixes.

A boxer corgi mix? I would think that would produce some very funny looking dogs! The body structure is just so vastly different.

As far as I know, the Presa Mayo is more like a conceptual/hypothetical "design" based on drawings and animations. As @Boxergirl mentioned, I don‘t see any breed improvement, but a visually very unappealing dog (just my opinion). Interesting topic, and thanks for initiating the discussion.

Interesting. They aren't as extreme looking as I would have thought. But, Is it just me or do the necks on the mixes look longer?

They do to me too. I'll have to do some looking to see what more recent generations look like conformationally. Is that a word? Lol
