I have a 5 month presa canario x staff puppy and I’m wondering whether to feed her large breed or medium breed dog food

Hi welcome to the forum, how big is your pup, is she more like the presa or staff,
I feed my ccs eden its 80 percent meat no grain, we go on the weight of the pup, and there body condition. Iv never fed puppy food. If you could say what your feeding your pup and where you are from I'll try to help.
A lot of mastiffs are allergic to grains and chicken based food my 3 ccs are , they can eat raw chicken, we have some great members with a lot of varied skills they will be along soon.
I'm in the UK but I will look at the foods that's available for you

If you want to feed kibble, I'd go with an all stages food. There are a lot of posts on the proper calcium to protein ratio that promotes a healthy rate of growth in our bigger dogs. I'm sorry, I'm not able to link it for you right now, but do a little looking. I've posted it before. Good luck, and welcome.

I second Boxergirl's recommendation of an all stages food. One of my dogs is a dogue de bourdeax cross with staffie and boxer so likely the same size category as your's. All stages food is absolutely perfect for him. Also my boy has a lot of allergies which is pretty common. So we always avoid any processed chicken in whatever food we feed him which definitely narrows down the foods available for him to eat.

I need to correct my post. Autocorrect changed phosphorus to protein. Calcium to phosphorus ratio is what's important. Sorry!

Sorry for the late reply she’s now just gone 6 months and 24kg. I will try to upload a pic but sometimes it doesn’t work.

I didn’t make it clear but I’m in the uk too. She’s currently on Ava large breed puppy food from pets@home. Not sure if this is any good but so far she’s grown well however couldn’t find much info online for potential future problems with feeding this food. Does a raw diet work for puppies? How would I work out how much calcium and protein etc in a raw diet?

Hi, iv just looked at your food, iv never fed puppy food, i feed an all stage food, if iv looked at the right food yours is chicken based, a lot of mastiffs are intollerent of anything chicken based, mine are, i would get her off puppy food. You want a slow and steady growth. I cant find the chart at the moment for good protein levels but i will find it today, i see the 15 kg sack is £40 iv seen online for the near same ingredients and chicken based you could get a different brand for £21. How much do you have to feed her every day, ill give you an example of cc gandalf, hes 69kg in weight just over 32 inches at the shoulder, i feed twice a day, i use a pot noodle pot the large ones to get ghe same amount, 1 full in the morning 1 in the evening, they have raw meat and bone only for treats, your butchers will sell you them. The food i feed is eden its 80 0/0 meat grain free, i pay £51 for a 15kg sack, each of mine eats a sack every 5/6 weeks.
Ill try snd find the chart of good protein levels ect
Where abouts in the uk are you.

Hi BigKali, I have just moved to an all raw diet for my 8 month old Dogue de Bordeaux bitch. I did have her on Calibra Starter/Puppy lamb kibble for a little over 6 months (similar values to the Ava food you are feeding) as this was what breeder fed her then for another few weeks I fed a mix of Calibra and raw but as I said I have her on 100% raw now. I am very happy with the change from kibble to raw. I do not worry too much about calcium to phosphorus ratio as I believe I feed a good balance of muscle meat, meaty bone and organ. Your dogs condition will let you know if you need to increase or reduce the variety and amount of food.
Good luck with your dog and what ever feeding choice you make.

These are the ingredients of the food. I feed her around 350g a day. The food lasted around 5/6 weeks. She was eating 400g a day but she was getting chunky so I reduced it. She’s now 24kg and was 12/13kg when I got her 3 months ago. I’m in London. Would 24kg be about right for a presa x (not 100% on the staff part). And is 11kg in 3months too much weight or too little in a short time?

What’s the ration of muscle:bone:eek:rgan as I struggle online to find anyone who gives a clear ratio and get conflicting information everywhere.

OK BigKali attached is a guide I use as a reference.
At present I have only fed the following bone containing cuts, Pork (feet, ribs, tails, neck), Chicken (whole carcass, necks, legs, wings) Lamb (neck, ribs) all human grade meat from local butcher as my main sources but have fed turkey neck a few times and also raw eggs and tinned fish (not raw but better that kibble ?) I will get around to introducing whole raw fish and hopefully she will enjoy it.
As I said I don't worry to much and over the course of a week I believe I get the balance right with the above meaty bones and also pure muscle like beef heart, lamb heart, chicken heart, chicken gizzard, beef rib mince, green beef tripe when available and beef & lamb liver and lamb kidney.
Hope this helps.

Is the pork ok for them as I had read online pork is dangerous for dogs?

So it’s not necessary to include every part of bone, meat, organ etc in one meal but over time it should balance out? Do you have an example of what your dog eats for one meal?

Wild pig is a perfectly natural food for dogs. Pork is included in some high quality kibble recipes from Taste of the Wild and Merrick just to name a couple of them. I actually think today's domestic pork is one of the worst meats we can eat as humans because of the way pigs are raised and fed, but I still eat it on occasion and I don't think it's any worse for dogs than it for us.

I don't currently feed a raw diet, so I'm not sure how much help I can be. Many, many years ago I fed BARF when it wasn't really accepted or recommended. The rule of thumb back then was to aim for a certain meat to bone ratio. I've looked into PMR (prey model raw) for my future dogs and there are quite a few calculators and informative sites around. Not just for PMR, but for other raw feeding methods as well. Maybe that's something that would be helpful?

You probably read about Trichinellosis, a parasite that is found in pigs and other mammals. It is recommended that you freeze pork for a few weeks to kill the parasite but in Ireland there has not been any recorded cases of trichinellosis since the late 60's and I believe its the same in the UK. This may not the case on the continent and possibly in the USA. However I do freeze all the raw meats and bone for my dog.
