My CC is 12 yrs and I rescued him at about 8 mths. I do not know anything about his lineage or previous life, but he is the calmest dog I have every been around. He has a very dominant personality but he is very good with people and other dogs. A good word to discribe him is aloof. If you want to pet him it is fine but he basically ignores you. His attitude toward me is he cannot get close enough. He has been one terrific dog.

Wow.. You HAVE REVIEVED A LOT OF RESPONSES TO THIS POST :)

I HAVE A FEMALE CANE CORSO, I GOT HER AT 11 WEEKS OLD... SHE'S ALMOST 8 MONTHS NOW.. EVEN FROM A WEE PUP, SHE HAS BEEN VERY PROTECTIVE OF OUR HOME.. OUT N ABOUT, SHE'S A TOTALLY DIFFERENT DOG..

WHEN SOMEONE ENTERS THE DRIVEWAY OR THE HOUSE, SHE'S ON HER FET WITH A VERY WATCHFUL EYE... SHE WILL NOT ALLOW PEOPLE TO GET NEAR HERE, UNTIL THE ENGLISH OR US, LET HER KNOW IT'S OKAY THEN SHE'LL SIMMER DOWN, BUT STILL WATCHFUL..

SHE HAS DEFINATLY BEEN A CHALLENGE ON THE TRAINING PART, SHE'S VERY THICK HEADED AND STRONG-MINDED...

SHE NEEDS TO KNOW WHO'S BOSS.. YOU NEED TO STAY STERN AND VERY CONSISTANT WITH HER, OTHERWISE EVERYTHING GOES OUT THE WINDOW...

AS I MENTIONED, AT HOME SHE'S ON GUARD, BUT OUT N ABOUT (PARK, KIDS GAMES, ETC..) SHE'S VERY CURIOUS AND PLAYFUL.. I DO HAVE TO BE ON MY TOES WITH HER THOUGH AT ALL TIMES.. I HAVE NOTICED IF ANOTHER DOG APPROACHES, SHE GOES ON GUARD, TILL THEY GET FALMILUARISE WITH ONE ANOTHER..

GOOD LUCK, I WITH YOU THE BEST.. THEY ARE GREAT DOGS TO HAVE AS A PART OF YOUR FAMILY.. :)

Wow, you sure have gotten a lot of responses to this post...
I got my cane when she was11 wks old, she is almost 8 months now..
She is by all means, not aggressive, but very protective around home, even since she was a wee pup..

When out n about, she is attentive to all her surrounds but happy go lucky... If another dog does approch her, i do hold her back till they get familiarised with one another..

Again at the house she is very on guard, you will know if someone enters your driveway or your house..
She will not allow anyone to get too close to her untill the english or us, let her knows it's okay, but she will keep a watchful eye untill she's ready....

We do have to be stern with her and let her know we are in control, she is very strong-minded.. You have to stay consistant with her...

Again, a great dog breed to have around for protection and as a pet... Love her to pieces...

I think it would be easier to answer the question if you explained what you wanted the dog for in more detail. Like city vs country living, mainly companion vs guard dog...
The CC can be a protective breed, depending on the lines, BUT I wouldn't say they are a guard dog per say. They want to be with their family, they don't like to be away from their ppl for long. As Brad stated earlier.
Some may go after an intruder, some will not. But if after the display they do give, if some one is coming into your house then they have a gun and are taking down what ever dog is inside, and I would say was personal. Most intruders would just go to the next house without the +100lb dog throwing it's self at the window.
There are a lot of CC breeders out there, breeding all sorts of temperaments, from fearful and skittish, to labs that love everyone, to down right aggressive. You really need to know what it is you want in the breed then, try to find the right breeder to match it.
As for type in the Corso, the breed still varies, unfortunately. The more you study the breed, the more you will recognize the type.
The Boxer / Bull Mastiff influence is called Hypertype in the breed.

what percentage of cane corso would you guess have the hypertype?

I guess ive been extremely lucky. My corso is 4 years old and has been a breeze to raise, train, and own. He is actually 1 of the 2 first dogs that i have owned as an adult. He is the perfect family guardian, and a very discerning creature. He is very 'waggy" around friends and family, but would defitely attack an intruder. I say this because when we stayed at my father's house when hurricane ike hit, a stranger wandered up and lu, my corso, got really stirred up and ran the man onto the hood of his truck. He lucked out because lu can jump onto the hood of a truck with ease. We are all pretty sure he intended to bite. He was raised for 3 years on about 4600 acres where he had free roam during the day. He has caught 5 hogs that wandered into the yard, killing one before we could get to it that weighed close to 200lbs. He never did persue chasing them and never exhibited any real prey drive. We now live in the city and he has adjusted very well. He lives a very pampered life with 3 small children in the house that play with him constantly. He immediately became protective of the house and yard. He seems to just turn it off once he leaves the front door. I do believe that if you choose to own one of these dogs, that you have the means to stimulate them vs just care for them. I take lu to the football field every day that i can and wear him out chasing his ball. I also take him with us wherever i can and back to the ranch many times during the winter when i start camping and hunting. I believe that to just own a corso, feed it, and walk it is doing them a major injustice. These breeds need "outlets"

Also, as far as different temperaments, and types...My dogs litter had many different personalities. He was just barely the largest male in the litter. The other large male of the litter kept picking fights and biting every littermate that got in his face. He seemed constantly pissed off! The breeder even said that they may have to hold onto him for a while and work with him. My dog Lu, was a quiet loner, and had deep set eyes that I just loved. We chose him and when he goes on walks he will hardly look at another dog that passes our way. He is completely uninterested, and unthreatened.

My CC in 7 months she is very friendly with other dogs (i took her to puppy kindergarten classes and she has been going to the dog park every day). She is friendly with people also. Recently she started being more protective when she hear a noise outside the house or in the dog park sometimes she barks to some people. Overall she is very social and easygoing i've never had a problem with her.

I have raised two. My oldest, who at five died of cancer. I didn't feel I could always trust him with people or dogs. He was a very good and loving dogs towards me....but not so much with others. Brutus in this picture. I would trust him 500%. He is a great guard dog, but knows when to be in guard dog mode. He is great with all people, kids and all animals. He has a great temperment. You just never know what you are getting and need to be ready to do all you can to raise and train them properly, but if you do get one with a bad temperment....you must always act as a responsible owner and know you pets and handle them as needed. I take Brutus everywhere...where I just had to love Bubba at home.

Brutus came from Odesa Missouri. He didn't come from any big breeder but he does have some nice dogs like Bel Monte and Scandifio dogs in his Pedigree.
I am just really glad that his temperment turned out to be such a great dog. He will be 7 in December and doesn't seem to have any health issues either.

Love this thread. I think I might like the CC and the PC. Although I prefer a dog that will bite. That likely has more to do with line than breed yea? Fila's are the same it seems. You get a bad breeder and you dont know what you'll end up with. It seems the Fila and CC have alot of the same caracteristics. I do love the mean arse look of a CC. They just tend to look tough.

Fila's are very much a clingy dog. So much so that many would say boarding one is not an option. Leaving them with friends also aint an option as you have almost zero chance of a proper temp Fila to be handled by anyone they dont consider family. They are also a very high liability animal as some simply will not tolerate stranger any where at any time. But they are awsome animals.

Hi!

I have a 5 month old female Corso, Rhea. She is the most intelligent and gentle dog that I have ever met. She is quick to learn, eager to please, and loves everyone. Corsos are very protective by nature and even at this early age, she is exhibiting protective qualities toward the whole family. They're definitely a breed that needs socialization though because they are dominant by nature and will try to call the shots. We have a 3 yr old and a 9 yr old and Rhea seems to know that they are fragile and is very gentle with them. I would definitely recommend the breed as long as you have the time to dedicate and you find a good reputable breeder.

I've done a lot of research, but never had the chance to meet this breed in person. And what I wanted to ask, is what are your expierences with the cane corso breed? And I don't want to hear a bunch of "I read off the internet" I could do that also, I'm looking for owners, handlers, or breeders.

I was wondering if this would be a good dog for protection as well as companion. I will be taking the dog to obedience classes and he will be properly socialized. I have owned large dogs all my life.... I thought about getting another akita but the climate here isn't suited for them.

I have a 19 month old male and a 5 month old ... they are both in Protection training. I can speak on my 2 Corsos...they both have natural guarding instincts... the Protection training is to be able to turn attack mode on and off on command. Both of my dogs are Very loving... They both think they are lap dogs like my wife's cocker spaniel... but they both understand Go time...lol
Very protective of my family... and once they see friends are not a threat they are nice to them....especially if they rub on them....
Greatest Breed ever !!! Lol

Don't know if your man , woman but I'd think about the opposite sex of yourself.. Protection and companion,,, If you have a companion,,, you have protection.. We had 2 Boerboels, 1 male brindle and female fawn.. 12+ years of joyful ownership on both, never bite a soul and never needed to.. You act right around 260 lbs of dogs.. A dog regardless of breed reads their environment and are acute to a persons aura .. If someone has ill intention they'll read it although some are bit more sharp than others..Prey drive in the boerboel is less IMO, Would have liked another for the farm but a CC x BM is what we ended up with.. She is a tough girl @ 15 weeks, but won't have the bulk that the BBs had.. IMO, the entire mastiff group is awesome.. Any of the group will make a fine what you want, well maybe not the boxer lol... PROVIDING,, You do your part..

what do you mean lots of different types in the cane corso? are we allowed to post breeder links I really like this kennel http://www.cherubscanecorsos.com/

I'm a foundation fan myself, be it dogs horses cattle or chickens, the old school stuff is much more to my liking.. That is some nice looking stock and screams foundation.. Like everything else if the almighty dollar is involved chit gets F'd up.. Our boerboels were prior to akc days..

I believe what was meant by "different types," is actually what was said. People have cut the Corso with boxers to get a Corso they use in dog Shows. Some people want taller, bigger Corsos so the cut them with Great Danes, and some people cut Corsos with Neopalitian Mastiffs for a thicker Corso. Some even say the Corso is a smaller version of the Neo... Most Corso lovers don't like talking about this subject. They claim there is ONLY Pure breed Corsos or its Not a Corso. Lol
I personally believe there are SOME Pure Breed, but Most have been cut. Especially in the US. I personally have 2 Corsos. I love them like no other !! Best breed ever !! Must be socialized, and Must be trained !! If not you are playing with a loaded double barrel shotgun that will eventually go off !! I trained my two myself. They need continued training or they will start doing their own thing. I go into Home Depot with my big boy Magic( he is 19 months old). He is very calm and observant. He has been trained to attack on command, and to disengage on command. Xena is only 5 months old and is not there yet...lol
Both are very good guard dogs. Very loving family members. They both sleep in the bed with my wife and I. Magic leaves and goes to his own bed when Xena wants to keep playing. Yes our bed is huge...lol. Magic is about 115 lbs and Xena is just under 60 lbs.

So my dog, 15 month old male and my prior male had very similar personalities and demeanor. I believe this is just as much the result of the breeder as it is of the breed (same breeder).
He will guard the yard. He will use his big tough bark on anybody that approaches, but he will not attack and he will not bite.
When my kids are swimming, he is circling the pool to make sure everybody is safe. If kids start dipping under the water, he starts barking to get our attention. If somebody starts horsing around with the kids and they start yelling, even though its good natured, he is right in there making his presence known. He is protecting them.
As a companion, he is like a shadow. He will follow me from room to room. I can not get up that he will not get up to follow. He craves attention is not aloof at all. He will try to crawl into your lap at any opportunity. We have a Frenchie and he is playful with her but not too rough. He'll often have her whole leg in his mouth and not bite it. On walks we generally tell him to ignore other dogs. A lot of the time other dogs will bark or lunge at him when they get scared of his size. It takes a different kind of dog walker to not fear their dog approaching a dog this big.

Hey Patrick! I'm considering a Corso for my next dog, and I'm trying to soak up as much knowledge and information as I can. Your 19 mo. old male I see in your pics: Given what you describe above, what type of Corso is he, if I may ask?

My boy Magic is cut with Boxer. He is GREAT!! VERY Loving !! He was a little too friendly for me... I put him through protection training... Now he has an even balance. Initially he would protect my property and my family but was way too friendly to strangers... now he has an even balance... we goto home depot all the time. He loves the attentuon..lol
He can also now attack on command and stop the attack on demand. Great balance. My girl Xena is the REAL BEAST !! She comes from the SCANDIFIO bloodline...look that up.. her bloodline is considered the Original version brought to the US . I believe they were cut with Neopolitains.... she is Much more aggressive and more protective... Female Corsos are different. They don't want as much emotional support. Now each dog is different, but for the majority the males want to be loved on 24/7 by family. The females not so much... I can tell Xena will probably be bigger than Magic, and certainly more aggressive. Socialization is a MUST with her....lol
