antlers as chew toys?

ive seen them at petco, but shop around or even look online for pricing. at my inlaws farm, the dogs drag antlers down from the woods, so they sometimes come to us free :) lol. i wonder if butchers that process deer might also sell them if the hunter didnt want them?

I get mine from a hippy type pet store, they have better prices than petco. One thing I noticed is some appear to be treated, like bleached or something, I get the ones that are untreated. Not sure if there is a significant difference though, but i feel like I read somewhere that you want to get the untreated ones. I actually saw that they had elk antlers the last time I went in there, I will be getting her one of those next.

yes, you can find antlers in petco, haven't seen them in petsmart, as well as some small private pet stores and online :)

I might have to get one and see if Zoe likes it.

Feed stores and pet boutiques tend to be cheaper. Even online is cheaper sometimes. I laughed out loud at how much they wanted for antlers at petco the other day.

We bought some for our older (now gone) dogs... they liked them for a few days, then didn't think too much of them. Denna also didn't think much of them - until she got a split one from my sister for Xmas. THAT one was AWESOME (I think she likes my sister more than me!).

After she had the split one, she decided the whole ones weren't so bad, and did gnaw one down to a size we had to toss. We got her a big split one, but that's still not as tasty as the one she got for Xmas. I've heard if you soak them in broth, that will get the dog's interest... we might try that, since otherwise, Denna goes after the plastic toys, and rips small chunks off of them to swallow.

So I wouldn't need to worry about small pieces breaking off and hurting him if they are eaten? Sorry but I've never fed any animal raw and have a big worry about small pieces of bones and such.

I've never had a problem with antlers breaking and I don't know anyone who has. Like any other chew I'd definetly keep an eye on it, and if he starts breaking off large peices I'd get rid of it, but small peices won't cause any problems.

My 2 have had antlers since they wherw pups..no chipped teeth, no chipped borken or sharded antlers... I found an antler walking around the woods ground down the points and that one is Kronos' favorite

It's funny because I was talking to a friend today and he got rid of all of his nyla bones and got all antlers because his dog had to get two chunks of nyla bone removed from its throat/mouth. The vet said it is much safer to stick with antlers! I just make sure I get the thickest ones possible because I feel like there is less of a chance of them breaking off a piece. Like I have noticed some come to some pretty thin points at the ends.

My husband said a guy at work finds them on his land up north. If he brings me back one could we and use that? Would we need to treat it with something?

My dogs were never impressed with antlers and I think the ones I had ended up in the back yard until they got thrown away -that being said - alot of dogs love them. But veterinarians are seeing ALOT of slab fractures in dogs teeth who chew them too hard. This has been making the VIN boards and in some of our newsletters more since the antlers have become popular.

Once I get some I will find out if he has a lot. If he does I have no problem sending them to you. :)

Cool, I was looking around my area for hunters with left overs but seems no one in my area hunts that much anymore.

my corso loves her antlers. What was said about getting whole versus split is true though. The less of the marrow like texture showing the longer it seems to last

yes they are pretty common to most pet stores now. I bought one for my cane corso a couple of months ago and his interest kind of goes in spurts chewing on it. They last forever and in my opinion well worth the cost.
