Shock Collar with Neo 6-10 month old

Does anyone have experience with using a shock collar on a Neo pup between 6-10 months? Male is showing a bit of aggression on walks and doesn't listen very well. Thought maybe the shock collar was adding to the problem. It's not my pup, a trainer suggested this type of collar for the boy. I'm just questioning that decision.

Have used shock collars on my Labs for years hunting, but they weren't introduced to them (and by introduced, I mean slowly) until they were a bit older and more into the advanced retriever training. I know my trainer said using them too young can sour the dog and make them very obstinate. Has your pup been to obedience yet? I dunno with Neos yet, mine is only 10 weeks and hasn't started formal obedience yet, but I am VERY familiar with stubborn Labs. Neos are so sensitive, I have to wonder if there isn't a better way. Just my 2 cents.

That decision is WRONG!! A shock collar on a pup has been suggested by your trainer?? You need a new trainer and fast!! You shouldn't have any reason to shock a pup and nor should you ever shock a pup! I highly doubt at the age of 6 months a pup is showing aggression and if he is its probably due to damage from shocking him! You say 6-10 months, is this a rescue pup that you don't know the age?

Can you elaborate, more on the aggression? Human? Animal? Neos are a guardian breed more so than most mastiffs.

I also agree that an e-collar would not be the best for this situation without more information. Adding a shock collar could intensify and cause redirected aggression onto the handler i.e. you. Using an e-collar is not really a "bad" thing however if you have no idea what to do and when to use them, its best not for you and your pup.

I agree, a 6-10 month old puppy doesn't know aggression. I also agree, shock collars can cause more harm than good.

How much obedience have you done with the dog? How good is he with the commands indoors and with no distractions? How do you work with him around distractions? How much work have you put into his loose leash walking skills? The part of him not listening very well is because he might not know what you're trying to ask of him.

Edit: Just reread and saw that it was not your pup. I would still ask the same questions to the owner

A trainer has suggested this? this is totally surprising. Has the owner done any actual OB with this dog? Where did this trainer come from?

Thanks for asking about the pup, are you able to direct the owner here if they aren't already?

If they use it right, and I mean PERFECTLY right... it might be OK.
But for the trainer to allow the owner to use it without his/her supervision is probably going to be trouble.

We tried a shock collar on our bulldog/boxer mix to try and interrupt his attacks on our other dog... it just made him mad.
These independent breeds tend to "work through" pain and treat it as a challenge, they often don't listen to it, like labs are more likely to do.

Not knowing any kinds of details about what the pup has been taught, exposed to, etc., and since I don't have any personal experience with a neo that age, I'm just asking this to see if it would be a practical solution-would a gentle leader work on a neo?

I think a shock collar is the wrong approach to this. When I walk my Neo I do use a pinch collar (I was trained long ago on the proper use of it) In the almost two years I've had Camo I've only had to use it for correction twice. He knows it's there, we have no problems walking anywhere anytime. But I do belive the shock collar will only add to the dog's irritation thus adding to the aggression issue. Neos, like most Mastiffs I've heard about, are sensitive animals. They get they're feelings hurt easily. Harshness is not necessary with them.

The collar was somehow destroyed? Pup is getting better after a few weeks additional work. My experience is with cc's, akita's and rottens (rotties) and have not used this method of training. A trainer I used awhile ago thought it would be okay for my cc/akita mixes and I said no thanks. Another trainer suggested letting the pups go with the trainer for a few weeks of intense training (one fear aggressive, one protective). Again, no thanks, Not sure the trainers had enough experience with Akita mixes or they would never have suggested removing the pups for a few weeks. They are pretty good now, respectful, playful and mostly calm in the house.
