Honest Heights & Weights

Honest Heights & Weights

Inspired by taraann81, let's start a thread with 100% honest heights and weights. Starting a new thread because we've hijacked poor DonnieH's thread long enough.

Only post weights that were measured on a vet's scale or a large scale at a pet store. None of this, I'm guessing he's 205lbs cause his dad was 195 and he looks bigger.

As for heights, it's a little trickier. The only way to do it properly is to use a level. I taped a yard stick to the wall and finally got Lincoln to stand still and "mostly" stand tall. Then laid a level on his back where I think the whithers are and made sure the level was perfectly, well level and noted where the bottom of the level touched the yard stick. This is a very tricky process for most of us as our dogs don't necessarily want to stand perfectly still and stand perfectly tall...at least mine doesn't.

So where exactly are the whithers? The way I'm interpretting the pictures I've seen is that the whithers are basically right at the top of the shoulder blades, almost directly above the front legs. NOT a few inches up the neck. Pretty much right at the base of the neck where the neck meets the back. You should be able to feel the shoulder blades under the skin. If you're dog kept their legs perfectly still and lowered their head, I'm guessing the whither would stay the same height.

So let's see the results. I'm guessing pretty much nothing will change from previous heights and weights we've seen posted here before. I'll post Lincoln's below.

Lincoln (one year ten month old male EM)

Highest weight on the scale at the pet store was 159.4 lbs. I say 160 usually when talking to people because he hadn't had his dinner yet. :)

Just did the most official height I could and came back with right at 32". I'd previously measure him using my hand at 32.5 numerous times. It's only a .5" difference, and honestly I don't know which number is right and he was fighting the measurement today and I'm not sure he was standing perfectly tall. Either way, he's at least 32 inches.

The arrow in the pic below shows the spot on his shoulder I measured from. Not a perfect pic since he's quartering towards me slightly. For refence, I measured the speaker behind Linc in that pic and it's exactly 33.25". I was holding the camera slightly above the speaker when I took that pic. Probably around 37-38" high so you are slightly seeing over him more than you would if I lowered the camera to exactly 33.25".

Re: Honest Heights & Weights

So are you just gathering "honest" heights & weights of EMs on the forum? Or will all breeds be considered?

Duchess nearly 2 year old - no I'm not going to say 23 month old that's kinda silly.

Last weight taken via Petsmart scale was 97 lbs. Height is 26-26.5 inches. Midget dog!!!

Last standing pic I have of her. Yes it sucks & yes it's not a good indicator of her height. But she's a PITA & doesn't stand for pictures. She acts like I'm going to beat her, then she sulks & usually flops down on the floor.

Re: Honest Heights & Weights

I'm not really collecting them....taraann and I were just discussing this in another thread and I figured I'd start a new thread (stop hijacking the other). Here's part of the reason for this thread...

sully weighs 195 lbs, and when measured properly is only 30.5... I had been marking his height on the wall and measuring up... I thought he was close to 33, and then when I made a crude wicket, a yard stick on the wall and used a level to measure from his withers too the yard stick, I got the heigth of 30.5. Ive.done quite a bit of research on heigth... And oddly... When these 35 inch dogs are measured officially with a wicket, the average hwigth for dogs in the ring is betwen 30-32 inches.... I ve now become a sceptic.... If that is the average of most of the big dogs in the ring, id be really surprised.to see SO many that are so far above these heigths.

and this...

I invite everyone to join a new FB group, "honest weights and wickets" according to these breeders, 30 is probably closer to average heigth with 32 being quite huge in comparison.

Mostly just want to see if anyone changes how they measure thier dog after reading this thread and create a thread where we can talk about whether people overstate the height and weight of their mastiffs.

Denna's last vet scale weight was 147 lbs, at the time, she was 22.9 months old (yes it sounds silly... but that's whats in my spreadsheet! HA!).

That same day, her height was 29.5" (best I can measure with her standing against a wall, she doesn't stand still, either), her neck was 23" around, chest 39.5 at its biggest point and length of back (shoulder blade to top - not tip - of tail) 29".

Denna seems really deep chested... the difference from front to back is more pronounced than most EM pictures I see... not sure what that means for her genetics... a great dane in there somewhere??

Yes she does have a large chest.

I'm hoping my Linc's chest and stomach grow into his head.

Took a few min, but yes my boy has shrunk, lol. He is 31 1/2 not 32 1/2 as I measured before without the level! Last weigh in was 142,7 about a month ago or so. Luke is a EM/Fila mix at 15 month.
And DennasMom your girl is beautiful, love her color!

You guys are sweet! I'll try and post more pictures - I certainly have a lot... just need to get them on the PC and uploaded. :)

I'll have to see about using a level for her next height measurement... I just try and use my hand... which for sure is not a well-calibrated device.

Here's another pic from that same day...

Cruiser is now at 198 down from 205, I'm struggling to keep him below 200 due to the plate/ pins in his left leg. He is 33.4 inches tall. Want his length nose to butt?

Kryten weighed in on Wednesday at 84.5kg. Converted it is about 186.3lbs. I'm having the opposite difficulty as Robtouw, Kryten needs to gain some weight so that he can be considered very lean instead of underweight. He has had trouble not only gaining weight but keeping weight on since his surgery.

Jade weighed in at 127lb 24" 10 days ago. Both her and Odi are getting weighed today. Odi is 5.5 months and just matched Jade's height this morning might actually be taller.

This page has a nice picture and detailed breakdown of parts and points on a mastiff.

I'll be next to petsmart today getting some equipment to install a remote security system for a friend, will pop in and weigh mouse then.

I'm not sure how tall Jake is I haven't measured him lately but he is 165 pounds (weighed at the vet last week) and he is now 2 1/2 years old.
