HeavyHauler & Ares.

Hello everyone,

I am HeavyHauler, and Ares is my male Cane Corso.

Ares is named after the Greek God of War, so he is Ares; Dog of War. I thought it was pretty clever.

Ares is my second Mastiff. Goblin was my first, he was a French Mastiff/Neapolitan Mastiff cross; who had many health problems.

I have been a dog owner, for most of my life. I had a Sheltie, named Casey. Who was 14 years old, when he moved on. He was my best friend, for 13 years.

Ares is fawn colored, with a black mask and brown eyes.

As soon as I picked him up from the airport, I think he knew I was his owner. He had a look in his eyes, it's hard to describe. So I put my hand to the front of his kennel and he started to lick it. Yup, we were off to a great start!

I brought him home, and immediately showed him to my wife and our two young children (2 1/2 year old and 9 month old). They were very interested in him. My oldest, my son Tyr; has been fascinated with dogs and has been very good with them. He hasn't pulled any dog's fur, tails, etc. He loves to play with Ares, using one of his pull toys.

After the kids went to bed; I started to train him. First up, was sit; as soon as he sat, I would say "sit" and then I would pay him on the head, or scratch behind his ears and say "Good Ares". He caught on quickly.

We received him on November 9th, 2016; he now knows sit, come, lay down, get it, drop it, and inside/outside. He can do these commands about 75-90% of the time. We will continue to work on them.

What we really need to work on, is house breaking. He pisses literally almost every 5 minutes to half hour. So trying to take him outdoors that frequently, with 2 kids and a couple feet of snow on the ground is a little crazy. But we're working on it. We're going to slow down his training of his other commands and work on house breaking and leash training.

Leash training has been coming along well. I take him for a half hour to an hour walk, every morning; as soon as I get home from work (I work 12 hour nights at a nickel mine). He is a little apprehensive of the 3 stairs that we have, leaving the kitchen; but is overcoming it.

When we go out for a walk, I keep him tight to one side. He does try to wander a lot, but I rein him back in. He likes to stop a lot and sit down. I mean a lot; he'll stop every few feet and I have to coax him to get up and go. But he is getting better.

He won't eat any of the commercial treats, available at Walmart (we only have a Walmart, Safeway and Canadian Tire); so I'll have to find him something that he likes.

I got him eating a PMR diet (prey model raw) and he LOVES it. I hate to do this, but I think we're gonna to switch to Bully Max kibble. At least, just for now. I'll have to order it in, but it seems like the best kibble to put him on. For teeth health though, do any of you have any suggestions? I was thinking of continuing giving him RMB's (raw meaty bones). He has eaten many chicken quarters and a Cornish hen, with no problems. Perhaps eaten is too weak of a word, devoured is more like.

Anyway, I shall post some photos of him later today; when I get home from work or in a few days, depending how busy I am. We have a guy coming in, to do the flooring of our new house! Hurray for home-owning!

I look forward to having great discussions with everyone and doing lots of reading!

Hello from another Canadian with corso, 5 at the moment :).

Potty training can be hard, especially when the weather takes a turn for the worst :( For the first couple of weeks/month we pretty much live outside as we are going out that often. Eat, out to pee, drink, out to pee, play 5 minutes, out to pee, nap out to pee, etc. It can get exhausting but in the end they start to get it and their bladders mature making it easier for everyone.

It sounds like you are off to a great start with your boy, will just take some time. While the puppies grow fast physically they take a few years mentally to mature compared to the smaller breeds (and in the case of one of my females after 8 years... still waiting :) ) Have some treats on your walk and just encourage him along when he gets back up and follows, praise him.

Also not sure what is going on as far as health out there but we are dealing with a bad strain of Kennel Cough here so keep a close eye on your pup and keep him away from other dogs. Vaccinating for it doesn't seem to have much of an effect at the moment :( and is really affecting the young and old dogs the most.

I am not familiar with the Bully Max kibble and am not sure what is easy enough to get for you in your area, that is always the challenge when it comes to getting foods up here. Finding a diet that has the right calcium/phosphorous ratio is important and if you can keep the protein between 26-28% (have seen a lot of pups lately with weak pasterns and splayed feet), then use what you are able to get readily and works for your pup.

Looking forward to pictures of your new pup!

You have 5 of them...WOW! Hahaha, that must be very...interesting!

Oh for sure, we'll get through it. I took him outside this morning, when I got home from work and he defecated. I then brought him inside for his breakfast of a large raw chicken breast. He wolfed it down.

I just woke up about an hour ago, my wife took him outside a few times; while I slept, he urinated a few times outside and a few times, inside.

When I woke up, I took him out on his leash; he defecated. We came back in, and I fed him another large raw chicken breast.

We're now hanging out, in our living room. He is chewing on my daughters chew ring, he seems to like that a lot.

We worked on sit, leave it/drop it and come. Taking a break for now. Will be taking him out soon.

What type of treats do your dogs like? I was thinking of dehydrating or smoking some meat for him. I gave him a little piece of cheese earlier, he seemed to like that. But I don't want to feed him too much of it.

Well, I live in northern Manitoba; in a small mining city. So we only have what is available at Walmart, Canadian Tire or Safeway. So not much, in terms of quality food. Hence why I have been feeding raw. But I'm gonna order in some Bully Max and see if he likes that.

Ares is going to be a working dog, so it's essential that he eats quality food and treats.

Yup, a ratio of 1:1 I believe, right? The raw meaty bones, should be perfect for that. Perhaps a little added powdered eggshells or bone meal, to his boneless meals.

What brand of kibble are you feeding? Or are you feeding a raw or barf diet?

It looks like I won't be at our apartment today, so photos will have to wait until tomorrow.

What is your favorite method of training? So far, we have been doing really well with voice commands and praise; no treats needed. But I'm open to other methods, diets, etc.

LOL! Well to be fair I do breed them. My two oldest, are retired/pets so I have 3 that are active in my program at the moment. How many meals are you feeding the little guy at the moment?

My dogs aren't fussy, they eat pretty much anything you offer them so makes life easier for training. When we are going to the show ring we try to use stuff like heart, liver, etc baked in some garlic powder for some flavor. We have use hotdogs, cut up cheese, baked organs cut up, even cheerios at one point.

I live in a small town as well, but am fortunate that there is a city with several food supply stores about 1/2 hour away that carry a good supply. You might want to look into some of the distrubutors that ships foods to your door might be an option for you as well.

Here are some I found on a quick search:
http://www.petonly.ca/
https://www.tlcpetfood.com/free-delivery.asp
https://www.homesalive.ca/
https://naturalpetfoods.ca/

We have fed raw in the past as well as several different types of kibble sometimes different ones at different times to make sure that everyone is on the food that meets their needs. Currently we are feeding a food called ProSeries made locally as we were having an issue with our dogs keeping weight on with regular grain-free kibbles, so we optied to try a food with some grains and a higher fat content and finally are getting some results.

What type of work are you looking to do with Ares?

We always start of positively with pups, and reward with what works for those pups, some are good with just praise some work better for food. Just depends on the individual dog. There is no cookie cutter way to do it, if your way is working then stick with it. If something comes up and you just aren't getting the desired result then switch it up to try something else.

I agree, it sounds like you're doing great with young Ares! And I'll and in another request for photos, too. :) You can use the "upload a file" button next to the "post reply" to upload a photo file to the post.

For food - If you do go to a kibble, you can still give the RMBs, but probably reduce it some... to say, 1 or 2 a week. The kibble should be balanced with nutrients, where the RMB is missing some items (which you would be balancing with more meat and organs if you continued the whole PMR diet). Or, you can do the PMR meals on the weekend, and kibble during the week... or one for breakfast the other for dinner, etc. Some dogs don't do well mixing kibble and raw meat, but my opinion, is if the dog is fully converted to raw, adding in kibble will not cause upset. Going the other way - adding in just a little raw to a pup used to kibble - is where the upsets are more likely to occur. In all cases, you just need to adjust the diet to fit your unique puppy... some dogs are just more sensitive than others. :)

Treats - since we do a raw diet here, I'll use kibble as treats - "Now Fresh" (a Canadian company) has a large breed kibble that is treat-sized bites, so that works really well. Especially when I know Denna is going to be getting more treats than a meal on any given day (i.e. when out socializing all day). The whole-protein freeze dried treats are also a good option. And, as you mentioned, you can dehydrate or refrigerator-dry meats to make your own treats. I did some fridge-dried beef heart that worked well. It needs to be a lean cut to dry in the fridge. For rare treats, the freeze-dried liver can work - but you can overfeed liver as a treat easily... which can loosen the poops more than you want!

On house-training.... have you had the pup checked for a UTI? Going that frequently seems suspicious.
I'd up the excitement of "Potty-Parties" outside, and make sure you get at least TWO good puddles outside before going back inside. Ignore puddles inside - unless you can interrupt the stream and get him to finish the puddle outside... and get a party out of it. Also make sure the inside puddles are cleaned up with a good enzymatic cleaner (like natures miracle or simple solution).

Another trick, if your puppy has a favorite place to pee inside, is to feed him there. The canine instinct is not to pee where you eat, so giving that room/corner/etc the "dining room" label can over come the "bathroom" label, given time and repetitions.

Welcome to the Forum! I look forward to hearing about your many adventures with Ares!

Welcome! As everyone else has said it sounds like you are off to a great start. I can't wait to see pictures and hear stories.

For treats we use a huge variety of things (including the occasional high quality store bought treat). Cheese is always a favorite but we use it in moderation. I found they prefer cheddar cheese to any other type, specifically sharp cheddar. They love sharp cheddar so much that when they have to take medications we hide it inside a ball of cheddar cheese and it works like magic. Sometimes we just use their kibble as a treat. They also go crazy for carrots and blackberries. Kahlua has also discovered she really loves frozen peas (I dropped one on the ground while making dinner once).

Potty training is never any fun. But, eventually they get the hang of it. Lots of patience, lots of persistence and yes definitely have those potty parties outside. :)

@HeavyHaulerAres

Good to see another Canadian on board.

We got our Charlie, on October 9th 2016, so we'e only about a month ahead of you on the puppy scale.

Housetraining , is coming along pretty well (with the occasional set back). We've gone 6 to 7 days without an accident, and then.... Coming out of the shower this morning, I was hit by the stench .

The other 2 dogs are sitting in the kitchen holding their noses . Charlie sitting in the hallway, looking like an angel, and there smack in the middle of the Living Room, a pile of poop as big as his head (and our boy has a big head):eek::eek:.

Now he'd been outside earlier this morning and did all of his business outside. He'd also been out right before I stepped into the shower and peed.... So go figure......o_O

Regarding Food:

I feed "Acana Large Breed Puppy". Charlie has 3 meals per day.
My other two dogs eat Acana as well. It's made here in Alberta, and is a good quality food (if a bit pricey).
They also get, raw beef knuckle bones, 2 or 3 times a week, slightly cooked bits of beef, chicken, cottage cheese, eggs, sardines once a week, a bit of cheese occasionally, cooked frozen mixed vegetables, chopped fresh greens, and home made chicken and veggie soup. Charlie likes bits of apple, and bits of carrot for treats, along with everything else he can wrap his big mouth around.

Hope all is going well with Ares.

Hello everyone, we've been quite busy the last little while; but I came to post some photos!

This one is of my youngest and I, when I first brought Ares home from the airport.

This is of our first walk as a family, notice that Ares is sitting in the wagon with my son, Tyr. Tyr wanted Ares to sit with him, they became fast friends. Ares, walked the rest of the way, shortly after that photo.

And it seems that I have no updated photos, uploaded to photobucket, so I'll do that now and hopefully be able to post them before going to work.

We're still having trouble house training him, he urinates and defecates throughout the night; my wife says "the second I fall asleep, he'll have shit and piss all over the place."

Well, it's not all over the place; it's one spot in the dining room and it's only one of each. Not multiples of each.

He goes outside frequently throughout the day, and urinates and defecates outside. But a few times throughout the day and once at night.

Any tips on house training him, or since he's getting better; just keep doing what we're doing and as he grows, he'll be able to hold it in better?

I never had a problem like this with any of my other dogs, so I've been doing what I can to get us all through this, haha. It's definitely like having another baby!

Charlie, is 15 weeks tomorrow.
I feel that we're almost there, but once in a while I'll still wake up to a SURPRISE on my bedroom floor in the middle of the night, and his surprises are not small surprises either, lol. SUPER YUCK !!!!

It all has to do with picking up on body language. I know the minute he disappears somewhere, that I'd better run and redirect him outside for whichever. If he walks away and starts sniffing aimlessly, I gotta move fast (unless I want to swim across a puddle the size of a small inland sea).

He knows, but just seems to forget once in a while. At times, he'll go to the back door to be let out, other times, the disappearance act. Even at night, sometimes he'll wake me up, other times the 'perfume' of giant puppy poop will wake me up .

Ares has been doing much better, I came home last night from work, and NO surprises! Same with tonight. :) Small victories!

Out for a walk, in the bush. Looking for tracks/game runs, for the upcoming trapping season!

Tyr doing some off leash training with Ares! :D

Tyr and Ares, playing tug of war.
