Teodora,in New Zeland,if your dogs kill a thieft in your porche or garden.Do the police take you to jail ?
more or less jail but theoretically the dog is put down even if it's "stressing wildlife, pets or people" - not sure whether the thieves are in "wild life" or "people" category.
As my dogs did pretty much "stress" him I can only hope I won't be back in court where I had to go few months ago because of a stressed sheep (which also was illegally on my property).

I know, it sound like a joke. It's not, unfortunately. This is how stupid animal control law is.

That's too bad Teodora. They put down means sleep the dog.But it was self defense, why put down the dog. They help the thief with that law.Woow you must protect your dog not to bite the thifts, that's funny.

Those types of laws make me so angry. Your dogs did a good job protecting you. Who only knows what would have happened to you without them there. I agree with al capone that laws shouldn't be there to protect the thieves and other criminals. I seem to remember you mentioning that guns are also illegal there? So if you can't protect yourself with a gun and you aren't supposed to allow your dogs to protect you exactly how are you suppose to remain safe? I suppose stabbing the thieves with a knife is probably also illegal? smh

And a law against "stressing" any people, wildlife or pets? Wow. I mean I understand not stressing wildlife in their own habitat since there could be issues with endangered species and stress reducing mating etc. But, on your own property? That is just ridiculous.

In any case I am so glad you and the pups are safe and I hope those guys were scared off permanently.

We had a minor incident with Carson at our cottage. A man we had hired to build an addition came to the door, I was sitting at the table and told him to come in, but I didn't get up and go to the door. Carson was in his crate (thankfully). He virtually exploded with aggression, barking, growling and throwing himself against the bars. The poor man was out the door, down the steps and out in the drive-way before I could get to the door. As soon as I welcomed him back in Carson was all wiggles and smiles. I learned my lesson, always get up and answer the door. It is very shocking to see them in full protection mode.

Nope, no guns either. If you say you want a gun for protection you won't even get a hunting permit ever lol...
Well you're supposed to call Police. And they do their best indeed, but there are some very remote locations here.

Maryl, "exploded" is the right term, indeed! That's what I've seen with mine. Wiggly butt also with all people I welcome in my home.

I am actually just a tiny bit surprised (and glad)you didn't have to clean the poop your dogs must have scared out of the thief off your porch. Dude must have a serious set of brass balls to make up some lame "Is my buddy X-name here?" bologna.

Tali is like Jack. When she gets serious, she's unbelievably swift, silent and effective in keeping me safe.

I hope I never need to call an ambulance if I couldn't crate her first. She'd never let them near me.

Billion years ago, when I was about 8-ish, a neighbor came knocking on the door around 1 in the morning, having apprehended two young teen boys breaking into my parents garage. When they wouldn't give up their parent/guardians name or number, my Dad called the police. The big black lab slept through the attempted break-in, was all welcome and wiggly butt with the boys, but OMG he went kooky palooza on the police. Seriously was not going to let them in the house or near those kids.

You just never know.

Lol.... no, Jack is cool with police and, to my surprise, even with police dogs on HIS property. I year ago or so there was a burglary and police with dogs went back and forth on the street including our front yard. It was the first time he saw police GS ( I have to admit they were huge German Shepherds, and very much onto it, the handler could barely hold the leash following them...) Jack went on the window and I was OMG, he's gonna get ballistic now... Nope. Those dogs didn't even look towards us and Jack was very cool with them passing back and forth.
