Sorry didn't get back to you sooner...
I'm in Canada, not the States, and there are no BB breeders in Alberta where I live. One has to go to British Columbia, or Ontario to get one.
Being an admirer of both the Bullmastiff and the Boerboel, I ended up getting the best of both worlds, a mix between the two breeds (our Charlie).
If you got good feedback from members on here about breeders in Holland, then by all means.
I wouldn't worry about the tail too much. Charlie has his tail, and at almost six months old, that's the least of my worries, lol.
If your wife is prone to bruising, I would get her some strong boots to cover her poor feet, and some shin guards, lol. Charlie, is a real foot pup. He will sit on your feet, stretch and dig his claws into your feet, stomp on your feet, and just recently, landed on one of my toes, almost breaking it, lol. So a sturdy pair of strong shoes or boots is a must in my opinion
.
You mentioned having experience with dogs, both big and small. Have you ever dealt with one of these very large powerful breeds? This is not a Golden retriever, or a Collie, or a lab. These are extremely strong, heavy and stubborn dogs, that need continuous on going training.
Unless you have experience with powerful breed training, I would be searching for a good trainer in your area, who can train you and your wife, in how to train your dog (before you even get your puppy.
Good luck.
