Machete accident and scar question

Injuries, injuries lol. So glad you are all sharing your experiences and stories with us. It gives us peace of mind. Drago is back to himself today. He still has a bit of a hard time opening his mouth wide to bark or eat. We have another appt in a few days to "re-examine" the cheek muscle. Hopefully the lack of control he has over opening wide is more from soreness and not from muscle damage. I guess we'll see. Sutures are healing well imo. The wound looks great and it doesn't seem to bother him. Altho I do worry when the itchy faze of heeling begins. He's like a relentless monster when he's determined to do something. We do have a soft e collar ready just in case. I'll keep you all posted.

Denna's had a few stitches & gashes... one for her spay - and I almost wish I'd had her tattoo'd, because you can't see the scar at all, so the only 'proof' of spay is the vet record.

Another was on her inner thigh - where, best guess, is a thorny berry bush sliced her open. 2.5" long gash through all skin, but not muscle. We let it heal without stitches (vet option), and it's on a flank with lighter hair, and the scar is darker, but fading (it's been 2 years). Fur is growing over it again, too.

And third is her foot... right down the middle of the big pad, stitches after stepping on a broken beer bottle... that's completely disappeared... but, feet might be special, going through pretty severe exfoliation on a regular basis.

If I had to guess, I'd say the scarring for Drago will be minimal, given that it's stitched cleanly and on dark skin & fur.

Glad he's healing! I'm still trying to imagine "running into" a machete... but maybe it's better I don't know? :)
White hair growing out lol. I hope that is not the case Denna as my boys face is such a solid gorgeous black lol..oh well maybe the salt and pepper will give our corso class..haha

I am so sorry to hear about Drago! I'm so happy to hear he is ok! What a scary situation!! Oscar got nipped by another dog a year or so ago...he has white hairs that grew where he was bit. We always joke and say his show dog days were over then. I hope Drago heals up quickly!!
I replied to you but think I put it to Dennis mom lol

Whew guys, today was a crazy, hectic, scary emotion day. While out walking the woods with dad today Drago ran full blast into my husbands machete. Instantly my husbands arm flew up and he said it sounded as if a soft ball was being hit. Instantly realizing it was Drago that got hit he called him over in a panic to assess the damage. I woke up from a loud panic scream coming from my living room to see my husband on all fours applying pressure to Dragos face. Me being a nurse practitioner took one look and knew we had to race to the vet immediately. Drago was taken in immediately, sedated and examined. He needed surgery. The machete tore thru the side of the cheek. Luckily It Misses His Eyes Mouth And snout. The vet said he fought the anesthesia tooth and nail, which is so my boy..can't do anything without a fuss or fight. End result was a bunch of stitches, antibiotics and pain meds. My concern now is scarring. He was shaved and the wound I'd say is probably 2.5 to 3 inches long. Has anyone had experience with suture scarring? Will the hair grow back in over the scar? His cheek now looks a bit pulled and disfigured but I'm sure alot has to do with swelling. First and foremost just grateful our pup is ok..just wondering about the healing and scarring. Any advice will help. Thx guys

Haha that's ok! Yea it's the smallest patch of white hair on his solid black mask. I was so upset at first...little battle wound makes him more attractive to the ladies...maybe :)

Such a handsome boy...tall, dark and handsome. But I agree, with Oscar's Mom, a scar can be very attractive...make him look rugged and mysterious. Remember that famous Dogo that battled the jaguar? He finished up with three or four big claw marks on his face, but he saved his family from harm. Very distinguished. And, he got to spend a lot of time with the ladies because of his courage and strength.

I just visited my daughter today and her little man, half Dogo, half AM Bully, lost his eye to cancer a while back. I look at him and think he looks like a pirate. It's sad, but it gives him character. Of course, he's a goof, your guy looks like a movie star...very dashing.

Loved this post. You all are making me feel so much better. I do have to agree tho, Dragos little shaved patch is so cute. I kiss his boo boo daily. It's so soft and I like how smooth his skin is. He looks like a pampered battle dog if that makes any sense. He's loving all the extra attention and babying. I think he likes all the yummy treats and presents he got for being a good boy at the vet as well. Definitely using the injury to his advantage. Lol!

Kryten has had 4 major cuts, all surgical incisions. The only one that is still visible is one from his surgery in October. It is along the edge of the callus on his elbow so I doubt that fur will ever cover it. The other cut from October is completely covered by fur and would be unnoticeable except for the fact that he has post surgical alopecia and the surrounding fur is VERY slowly coming back. The 2 cuts from 2013 are invisible.
The noticeable scar.

His fur less shoulder with the tuft of fur over the surgery site (at top).

Minor cuts from rough play have white fur
