A Sex Maniac...

Hello All,

Our baby Charlie, was 6 months old on the 12th of February this year. He's a big strapping lad, and growing like a weed.

Since he's turned 6 months old, he has discovered that his manly equipment, is not just for peeing.

He has had an on going love afair with a large stuffed bunny (until he decapitated it and they had to part company).

Since then, he's shown interest in some old pillows that he likes to 'play' with, uhemmm....

I have made suggestions, that he and his 'love pillows' get a room, but he has absolutely no shame.

The disturbing incident, which has me posting about my puppy's love life today, is an incident between Charlie and my wee Katy.

Now let me explain... our Katy, is a cross between a JRT and a Japanese Chin. She is strong and muscular, but she is very SMALL (19 lbs). She is 6 years old, and has been spayed since she was 6 months old.

Baby Charlie, is very attached to Katy and loves her very much.
Well the other day, I discovered that he loooooves her a little too much....

I caught him grasping her, and attempting to hump her head.....
I was :eek::eek::eek:
She was :mad::mad: and tried to bite him in the weanie.

I let out a screech, that must have had the neighbors falling out of bed.
Charlie, dropped her like a hot potato, and she proceeded to chase him around the house in high dudgeon, with him running for dear life.

My old 12 year old Danny (who is more than half blind and half deaf, opened one eye, said "eckkk" shook his head, and went back to sleep.

After calming the uproar, picking up the knocked over chairs, scattered toys, flying pillows and dog beds, I sat down, took a deep breath, and started thinking.

Is this going to be a problem???
Is there a possibility of our darling Charlie, hurting my darling Katy with his amorous favours???

Any thoughts will be welcome.

Oh my goodness!!!! Elana you have reminded me what I don't enjoy about male dogs!! Poor Katie! I read on a forum where once a day, they give their 6-month old pup his favorite pillow, put him in a room and close the door, allowing him plenty of time to do what he does without disturbing anyone else's sensibilities. [emoji23] Owner swears it keeps him at bay the rest of the time. Are they really that smart?

Well I guess boys will be boys, and just like my good old Danny boy said..." Eckkkk."

I just wish that he'd leave my little Katy out of it .

Haha Elana! You have a way with words!! This was the first thing I read as I woke this morning and I laughed out loud! I agree...... shut Charlie in a room with a pillow and let katy breathe a sigh of relief!! I have to admit, I've never had a male dog and I think I would struggle with all of that!!!!!! Hope he doesn't progress to humans [emoji15]

Snicker....Smirk....Tee Hee....Pervert Dog. I had a cat that did the pillow/fluffy sweater thing...even if I was wearing the sweater at the time. Gross! But, as the wise men say, this too shall pass. When Charlie hits the 2 year mark it's off with his....reason to play, and Katy will rule the roost. That's presuming you don't plan to keep him intact for breeding purposes. And, it will never stop dominance displays...sigh!

Oh, I don't envy you. I suggest a squirt bottle or a small air horn to pull him back to reality. I don't suggest aversion therapy lightly, but, boys sometimes only get the message when it's loud or uncomfortable. And he needs to know that, notwithstanding his need/interest/desire, Katy is a big No-No. Good Luck, I'm rooting for you!

Glad you got a Charlie chuckle this morning.

He's left her alone since the INCIDENT, concentrating on his pillows and a blanket instead.

Katy, is my first girlie, we have always had boys (just the opposite of you).

Charlie boy, had better not transfer his errr... affections to any people .
Funny you mentioned that though...
Many years ago, I had a small Silky Terrier, who was one tough little customer.
Our Joey, had a 'thing' for our lady neighbor's feet for some reason, lol.
Now Flo, was an elderly war bride, who had come over from London after World War Two, and a tough old bird herself.

Well anytime Joey saw her, he would make a bee line straight for one of her feet, grab her ankle and woo hoooh.

I can still see Flo now, shaking her foot vigorously, trying to dislodge the happy humper, with a : "Gerr offa me ye nasty little booger, gerr offf!"

It was absolutely hilarious, and he never did it to anyone else. When Joey wasn't loving her feet, Flo was actually quite fond of the little fellow.

Guess my rather loud screech registered in his brain for the time being. He has left little Katy alone since the "event", lol.

As to if or when Chuckie will face the dreaded knife....
I am not sure as yet.
It all depends on how Chuckle bum behaves as he gets older. The more I read about it, the more I am leaning in the anti-surgery direction, but for now we shall take a wait and see attitude (as long as he leaves Katy alone, or I might be tempted to personally chase him around the house with a pair of snippers ).

Diesel had a love affair with his bed for a little while. He out grew out of it and never moved on to anything (or one) else even before we had him fixed.

Now my sister's cat on the otherhand is a neutered male who continually humps her other neutered male cat (for the past several years) Apparently the hunpee doesn't seem to mind. So I suppose it all depends on the individual as to whether these things last or not. :/

After all this talk, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. Funny about Flo! Elana you're killin' me!!

So I was thinking of not fixing Pippa, and fixing the boy at 2 years, only having 3 heats to separate them, or have them both fixed. Idk. Pippa is 2 in June. Maybe just have her tubal ligation?

And sometimes I wonder if I'm making a mistake getting another Mastiff at all.

I want to do what's best for them, but leaving them both intact would likely end up in puppies!

Mounting/humping can become a behavioral thing that neutering won't fix. It's not really a dominance issue and only sometimes is it a sexual issue. There's a lot of literature about it. Usually it's due to overstimulation/arousal/excitement that's not of a sexual nature and boredom. Of course it is masturbation, so it feels good and can become a habit. I don't allow it in my house and treat it as just another undesirable behavior. I had a husky that liked to pleasure himself with his mouth and hump everything in sight when he was an adolescent. It was a terrible habit to try to break. He was neutered early because of that and it didn't develop into a habit.

PippatheMastiff, I know I harp on this, but please do the reading and talk to people about the huge risk of pyometra for females. Normally it's a bigger risk for dogs that cycle quickly (every four or five months) and non-breeding females age 5-6 and over. Normally. My daughter had a one year old female come into her emergency clinic last month, I don't remember what breed, but it was a larger breed. It was her first heat and she ended up with a closed pyo and was euthanized. Tubal ligation does nothing but prevent pregnancy. It doesn't prevent pyo and it doesn't make her heats stop, so it's still an issue with arousing the boys. An ovary sparing spay is an option, but you need to have someone very good at it. It's more invasive and it's really difficult to get every little bit of the uterus. You still have the risk of stump pyometra. I do apologize for bringing this up all the time, but it's such a risk - more than most people know - that I think it's important to keep mentioning. Also, simply breeding your female once doesn't take away the risk. She'd have to be bred constantly. That's why most breeders spay their bitches when their no longer being bred.

Thank you Boxer Girl. It is very common, and it is the main reason I'm leaning towards a full spay. There are so many pros and cons, but since pyo has occurred in Pippa's mothers side, I believe you're right and I should start looking for the vet to do her spay, soon, as the pup comes end of March. Maybe it will be best if she's healed before he comes. Thanks for your input!!

I waited until Ella was a little over four years old to have her spayed. She cycled every four months and had two false pregnancies. It was a very difficult surgery and recovery for her. She had a bleed that they had a hard time stopping as well as difficulty keeping her temperature up while under anesthesia. If I had it all to do again, I would have spayed her at around the two year mark. If you do choose to have Pippa spayed sooner rather than later, my vet wouldn't spay (unless it was an emergency) until around three months after the last cycle so that hormone levels were at their most level. Of course that didn't work for Ella as she cycled so quickly. I just did smack in the middle of her cycle. Good luck with your decision. I know it's not an easy one to make.

So she's had 2 heat cycles, 6 months apart, another heat expected mid-March. Maybe I should wait until July? In case her hormones are already amping up.

I don't think that's a bad idea. I was told that it was three months after the start of her heat cycle. Not all vets go by that, but I agreed because I could see how Ella's temperament changed with her hormone levels. Also I was told that closer to heat cycle means more blood to the area so more risk during surgery. You'd have to check with your vet about that.
