Also you said he started changing at 10 months did it happen real fast or you saw some small changes and what where they if you don't mind me asking. My pups 9.5 months and I'm dying to learn what things to keep and eye out for

As far as his temperament changing, he is still the same dog with family. He has however increased in confidence. He's much more alert and discriminatory towards unfamiliar sounds/people on his turf. He's gotten more serious in that regard. He's very biddable, but has started to exhibit the Mastiff Lean (claiming people/invading space) so if that's a rank driven characteristic we tend to not let it happen.

He's also not a dog park dog. At around 8 months he became easily excitable. Any unbalanced, overly submissive or overexcited dogs become a target. He's quick to jump into any existing confrontation and start/end/enjoy the fight. Keeping him distracted, or really being on him visually is required to call him off, but once he's engaged good luck.

He is social and stable with many other dogs, but these tendencies appear to be environmentally triggered. A particular confined dog park in tends to set him up for failure in this regard - so we rarely go. I do use it however to monitor his growth and development from time to time. How his behavior is socially/how he views rank/dominance with other dogs/obedience proofing and general behavioral observations.

This could also be a reflection of a year old in tact male figuring life out. His fight to bite ratio is very good, but as a bully breed many of the same rules don't apply to him. (Big, strong, pitbull like dogs engaged in a fight/dominance display is not the same as the dominant standard poodle pushing his weight around)

Monitoring and knowing your dog's behavior/triggers is extremely important. People are amazed by his advanced obedience skills, and he makes for an excellent breed representative. I work to ensure that he is calm, stable, and sociable, but also make sure that he is set up for success and monitored closely.

16 months old today.

He's becoming more defensive and territorial of the house and car. As well as possessive of my older female giant schnauzer. If she's ever in distress he's to the rescue (particularly if intact males mount her and she makes a correction - Cairo hears her vocalizations and promptly corrects said males as well. (He's on an ecollar when off leash with Jada to prevent escalation of his aggressive/dominant behavior)

His training is progressing well. He's very clear headed and stable for such a young dog capable of switching from prey to defense very easily. We are preparing for PSA trial this fall and are planning on obtaining our PDC.

Quick control drills - being used to turn into a successful "bark and hold"

Cairo being worked primarily in prey.

Thanks!

Figured it's one way to safeguard ourselves against breed discrimination!

Hit 18mo now.
Been seeing an increase in reactivity to other male dogs. And increased alertness/interest in other dogs while on walks.

Not quite dog aggression but I won't be allowing it to escalate to that point. Been diligent with the appropriate corrections.

I blame hormones. I think it's safe to say puberty has officially started.

He's going out for his PDC late April. He's still on track to do well.

A beautiful dog.
He has an amazingly intelligent look in his eyes.
Best of luck with his training.

P.S. What happened to the videos?

Ha. @elanap

Sometimes I question how often he's "thinking" and other times I certainly know he is.

And not too sure what happened to the vids. I'll have some more this week. We have been working on targeting high - armpit area and preparing him for "sends"

The prior vids were at 16 and 17mo.

The backtie tree vid was him working primarily in prey - targeting the human.

The second was primarily defensive work - lots of hard eye contact from the decoy and forward pressure.

Some of the vids are quite long 2-4m.
Not quite sure where they went or why the upload feature changed on the mobile interface. As soon as I figure it out I'll post.

This is technically personal protection training - I think true guard training would require him to be more of a sentry type dog and for my purposes I prefer a social, less civil/defensive animal.

I want something that is stable, safe and comfortable around crowds/people. Typically guard dogs aren't as discriminatory.

There is a slight sport component to this training.

Although he is NOT a true sport dog by breeding or temperament.

I simply wanted to grow as a responsible dog owner and provide this big ol' hog dog an appropriate outlet for all his drive.

I'll try and take him as far as I can - more of a showcase of his adaptability/engrained abilities/solid training/growth with him.

But he doesn't hold a candle to some of the sport/purpose bred dogs I train with -many of which have high percentages of game pit or mal blood.
