“Naughty Breathing”

I have a 10 month old Corso, Lettie. When she is being bad (typical puppy bad), she does this weird breathing thing. It’s like she is panting, a little, like a lazy pant. She just walks around looking for trouble with her mouth open and breathing loud. I’m just curious if any one else’s dog does this? It started a few months ago. She is such a goof ball, it’s like her warning signal that she is on the prowl for trouble. When she is “naughty breathing” you know she is about to jump on the couch or tug on a shirt sleeve. :)

Stress/anxiety panting?
I really don’t think so. I’m not an expert, of coarse, but it is always when we are at home relaxing. Maybe even when she is bored. She doesn’t seem to have much trouble with stress and anxiety (luckily). The only time she seems to show stress is after she has to be alone at the vet, and she used to get stressed about car rides but she has outgrown that. She would yawn and act tired.

My dogs don't do that, Jarena. I have no advice about the such. Sometimes the two boys smell each others "private part" and kind of "make that motion", but otherwise there is no breathing involved.

Hi Jarena, my Zeela is a 10 mo. old Cane Corso also. I know kind of sort of what you are talking about. I call it the bewitching hour. I am not sure why they do that. I think it may be a little bit of boredom and they want to play but fight play (if you know what I mean). I also think sometimes if they eat too much salt it makes them have anxiety. I have noticed that with different treats/foods. I do fight play with Zeela in the yard and let her get that energy out, she's big obviously so it's not an easy thing and you have to protect your arms (i wear my leather jacket) but it does seem to help with the bewitching hour. This breed seems (from my observation) needs to release aggressive energy or they start to get naughty.

Her naughty breathing is happening less and less like she is growing out of it. She still does it sometimes, seems to be mostly when she is feisty and tired at the same time.
I agree with them needing to release energy. If she is good all day long, I know to expect some craziness later in the day lol. The older she gets the sweeter she gets, but she is still a puppy :)

Logan does this also. He just keeps his mouth open, and pants and anything that gets near it gets bit. When he's doing it I tell the girls not to pet him. Cause he will mouth whatever comes near him. And even though he mouths gently his teeth are super sharp, and large for a puppy. He will snag our clothes w his sharp crocodile teeth. I tell him "NO BITE!" So yes I know what you're talking about. Must be something with these guardian dogs. Like Zeela said, they must have pent up energy. When I see him doing it I give him his bone. And tell him down.

That's good news, glad to know he will probably outgrow it :)

I’m picturing the little polar bear grinning and panting and waiting for a victim lol. I bet he is adorable when he is being bad! Gosh, I wish I could say that Lettie mouthed gently. I have scars from her shark stage. Eek, I’m so happy we’re over that part. I celebrated every stinkin’ puppy tooth she lost lol.

Unfortunately, I have had to work with him to get him to be gentle. At first he was a bit rough. I just kept telling him easy, and treat, I had to do that to get him to go easy on Sophie. I hate those teeth too!! Ready for those razors to go. I've had to get stuff outta his mouth, and hit my finger on his tooth or grazed it, and end up w punctures or slashes. Hurts like hell! I can relate to the scars. He's ruined quit a few of my clothes snagging them w his teeth. And yes he's adorable with his " naughty breathing" self! Bet baby Lettie was too!

My little 6 lb poodle puff does that when she's playing.... I'll try to record it and post it for you....and she'll be 10 years old this year so she's never grown out of it

Sometimes Diesel shows stress signs like the panting or yawning just before he does something naughty. I think he does it because he reallllly wants to do whatever that thing is but he knows full well he will get in trouble. He doesn't want to get in trouble but he really really wants to do the thing (whatever it may be). Its like this internal struggle inside him. Sometimes a stern word from me will stop him doing it but the panting or the yawning will continue because he is still thinking of it (until I can distract him with something else). Sometimes his good angel loses, he gets in trouble and then the stress panting is because he is in trouble. :p

Also sometimes rolling Diesel into a bear hug and just holding him for a few moments puts an instant stop to the whole crazy cycle. His brain just works overtime and sometimes he needs help to make it stop, calm down and think normal. :p

I like that we can all share our experiences on here. It helps to know that other dogs have similar behaviors, and our dog is not the only one acting out. Also to hear what techniques others use to quell the behavior helps a ton! :)

I agree April! I love having this community to share and read. Now I haven't been on for a while. Only because I've been really busy working till 10pm trying to get everything done before surgery.... but before that I was on this daily... a couple times a day... its kinda addictive lol

Ok I got a video of her naughty breathing. It’s terrible quality, sorry. She is sitting in front of me with her back legs on the floor and her front paws on the couch and my arm. Her “naughty breathing” is slowly changing as she gets older. It’s not always just when she is looking for trouble. Sometimes it’s when she wants something, like in this video, she’s wanting me to rub her chest but when her big ol’ paw is on my arm I can’t reach lol. My little weirdo.

She is just stunning Jarena! I know it's a video of her bad behaviour, but she sure looks good being bad ;)
