I live in Santa Cruz , California and we are getting perfect mushroom weather right now with the rain and drop in temperature. I love eating what I know well...and taking photos of the fungus amongus. Anyone else here fancy themselves a mushroom forager?

Beautiful photos ! I am actually severely allergic to mushrooms and their oils, even truffle oil. If something is even cooked with one very bad things happen to me.

I do enjoy looking at them though. Here is a frost covered one in my yard

Hey Nic....I have a few books about hunting edible mushrooms. The point of both books was; "Never eat any mushroom with fins...the fin-like deals on the underside." These will kill you. I sliced what we call a "puff ball" mushroom once and fried up a slice, took a bite, and I wondered why I did that. We had a Vo-Ag teacher at the school where I once taught. He brought in some kind of mushies, deep fried them in a "Fry Daddy", and ummmmmm---they were good. He was only a substitute and I never saw him again. He ate the fried tasty mushrooms, so I felt unafraid to try. They sure were good to the taste buds. Have a great day. Anything new on the coyote situation ???011.JPG

Thank you. There are actually many mushrooms with gills or the fins you refer to that are delectably edible...in fact, of the thousands of mushroom species, only about 20 will actually kill you. For instance, the gilled mushrooms in the 3rd and 4th pic I posted are two of the most sought after edible mushrooms, the oyster and the golden chanterelle.

I would say that the best advice with mushrooms is to only eat what you are 100% sure of...and collect them with someone who is experienced when you are first learning. It is a fascinating world that can provide a lifetime of enjoyment, and is my absolute favorite excuse to go meandering about in the woods.

For me all mushrooms are deadly. I have epi pen which is suppose to help but personally I would rather never have to stab myself with that thing it is giant and they are rather expensive to replace. And I actually really love mushrooms and truffle oil but none for me.

I forgot to answer your coyote question! They are still around. We see them at the end of our street, on the other side of our fence, around the block. But we hear them singing the songs of their people almost every night. They did get a neighbor around the corner's small dog. They got the dog inside the yard. Neighbor has a six foot tall fence and was in the yard with the dog when three (if I recall right) hopped the fence and basically tore their poor dog apart. It was a smaller dog and the neighbor was doing yard work and had her back turned when she heard the noise. She said it happened in a flash. I do think they would be a bit more hesitant with my two dogs given the size but I haven't been sending them out alone to risk it.
