Boerboel Pup Soft Stools

Hey guys,

Syris seems to have developed a possible food allergy.

Not long ago he begun weezing and coughing aswell as itching, then come the soft stools.

He was being feed Canidae Large Breed and Pure, he is still only 6 months old and is 90lbs. We went and spoke with our Vet and they suggested using Hills I/D Vet Diet Digestive Care. We took their advise and begun using. 2 weeks on after the transition to the new food his weezing, coughing and itching has pritty much disappeared but he still has soft stools, not diarrhoea but very soft, his demeanour and puppy like self is still all the same (full of energy etc) and is still continuing to grow.

Im thinking we have the Vet do some more tests on him to try determine what could be the issue but thought id reach out on here to see if anyone has had a similar experience.

Attached is a photo of Syris taken a few weeks ago.

I did think of this but was unsure whether or not its chicken that he could be allergic to if its a food allergy considering all his dry food has been chicken based.

My EM is unable to have any dog food or treats that contain chicken or any other bird. It causes extreme gas and soft stools. He can have fresh or cooked chicken. I think it must be in the way it gets processed that makes it bad for him and not the protien itself.

Yea ive heard from a few different Mastiff Owners about their sensitivity to Poultry.

Im going to try Syris on TOTW Pacific Stream and see how he goes with it. We are very limited here in Australia in regards to dry puppy food, 99% are all chicken based.

I stopped feeding TOTW because of soft stools, but I didn't try the Pacific Stream. Maybe this diarrhea is only temporary. Boiled chicken, rice, and pumpkin usually does the trick and then you can go back to dog food. You can substitute turkey for chicken if you don't want chicken.

as smokeycat said , the chicken allergies in dog food , seldom translate to allergies from fresh chicken ......

I also had an issue with Taste of the Wild and soft stools. Also 4 Health.

I wanted to mention one other thing that often gets overlooked. If his body condition is good, or if he's anything less than lean, maybe try cutting his food back just a bit. Overfeeding can cause soft stools. Most often it's the food, but sometimes it's feeding too much.

Syris is lean even at 90lbs 4/9 body composition but i will see how he reacts when i restrict is food a little more.

Syris is not receiving any treats, wehave stripped everything right back to just his dry food to see if there was anything that could possibly be setting him off tbats not his normal dry food.

Hi Mike- our Boerboel, Daisy will be 7 months (8/14) and weighs 95lbs. We went through the same thing with her for about 2 weeks. Very runny stools but still active/healthy otherwise. We changed her food to all beef kibble and cut out treats. That really seemed to help. I will add that when we are out on walks through parks, beaches and our friends farm, she gets into EVERYTHING. Even in our back yard she’ll dig something up and eat it. Puts her back with the runny stools and needing relief in the wee hours of the night. I hope you find a remedy for Syris. Beautiful boy.

Betcha it's the food. You'd see it if you were overfeeding.
