1 year old with hip dysplasia?

I have an opportunity to adopt a beautiful 1 year old male bullmastiff from a breeder. She purchased him for her breeding program, but when she had his hips xray the vet told her he couldn't be used for breeding because he had hip dysplasia.

She said she is not sure how bad it is, but he doesn't show any signs of pain. What would be the cons of adopting a male known at this age to have HD?

I would love to adopt an older dog passed the puppy/housebreaking age. How much would you pay for this dog? I believe she is asking for $1000. Don't quote me on that:eek:.

There are many young dogs that get a hip misdiagnosed.
It happened to my sons Lab the vet said hip dysplasia and got everyone all worked up.
A casual conversation with a Vet at a party and he told my son that it is very unusual for a dog of that age to have this issue and that it was probably just that her growth plates have not developed yet.
That Vet recommended they just keep her calm and give her joint suppliments and he was right.
She is almost 3 now with no hip issues at all.

I wouldn't pay more than a couple of hundred for a dog that has a life long disability that could cost me into the thousands.

Since the HD was only diagnosed for her breeding program, it could have been a very low severity issue... just not "excellent" hips... so she didn't want to use him for her breeding program.

I would have talked to the vet who made the diagnosis, he would have been able to say how "bad" it was. Not sure why the breeder didn't have the full report with copies of the x-rays. That seems fishy to me.

So.. I guess you were meant to have a different puppy, anyway - he's out there! I know you'll find each other when the time is right.

Id question his quality.... I cant imagine if she bought the pup from a GOOD breeder, the breeder would not take the pup back, as HD at a year is alnost always genetic.... The dog who bred that dog would want say in what happens to the pup
