I'll see what I can do Saturday, wish I would have thought about it the first time...
So here was our second session, for a newbie everyone was pleased. We will be working on focus drills between now and next time, just having him look at me and getting clicked and treated throughout the day. The name game and this focus drill seem like foundation skills, wish I had known about them sooner! One thing I will need right away is a broad flat collar that he can pull against.

You're quite welcome. Crickett owns me as well...it must be a corso thing :) I love what you do with Safir...you can see how much he loves IPO. Crickett loves lure coursing, she got her first title this summer and in the spring we will be going for her next title. I always wondered if she would do well in IPO.

Aw, thank you! How old is Crickett? she is a sweetie! She must have high prey drive if she enjoys lure coursing so might very well like IPO :) You should test her for IPO if you have a good club near by, as it requires more than just drive in a dog to succeed. Good luck getting next title - its great to see more corsos out there working and getting titles!!!!!

This is awsome. I got inspired by other member that do schutzhund training and wanted to do it with Sadie. I contacted our local club via email and the responce I got back was stunning to say the least

"At this time we are full and not accepting new members.
We had a few Mastiffs try this sport but it is very difficult for the big dogs to do well. Since we are a Sch club we do not only do biting due to liability.
Happy Holidays,"

So, they way I read it, since "mastiffs don't do well," don't even bother......

Its an expected response from a Schutzhund club. Its true that very few mastiffs can do the sport and very few owners have the deducation to do it as well. Some clubs have GSD only policy, since this sport was originally developed for GSDs.

I suggest you go visit the club anyways (without your dog) and meet the people and observe training. That will show them you are serious and you will be able to see the sport first hand (if you are new to it) and consider if your dog might have what it takes to participate :)

I might go and check it out. All I was looking for was an outlet for her prey drive, and figured this would be great. I was not looking to be "top dog", just something to do with her other then obedience.

For IPO you will need:
harness
dumbells
long line
short line or a tab
tugs / balls / whatever other reward
e-collar or prong (your choice)
fur saver collar for trialing
articles for tracking
jumps (clubs have this usually)
microchip or tattoo for identification purposes during trials
I think this is all

EEK, you forgot the metal mesh gloves to save your hands lol
i did 2yrs of schutzhund with my GSD. Now 5 yrs on, the training is as solid as it was back then. and was lovely to make friends that really know high drive dogs.

keep us posted!
