I have a 3 YO English Mastiff looking for his forever home. I had a call asking if I would take this dog in because a friend of theirs happened to tell him that he was taking the dog to the pound the next day. I'm not even sure I asked any questions before I said yes. The owner did come with 2 kids & dropped him off that night. No emotion at all.
Anyway, my husband agreed to let me take him in temporarily until a home could be found. I refuse to list on Craigslist or Hoobly. I will continue to care for him like one of my own until the perfect forever home is found.
There is no "price" on Sarge. He didn't come with a tag.
There will be requirements that have to be met though. I spoke to the vet clinic that his previous owner used and they stated that he is not up to date on anything.
Requirements are as follows:
Your family must come to my home to meet him & spend some time with him first. I will not allow someone to come look at him and take him that day. Both the prospective new owners & I will need at least 1 night to think on it and be certain we feel this will be a great match. If you have other dogs/cats I would like to bring him to your home once to see how they do but pending on circumstances I may not insist on this.
You will have to sign a contract stating that if you should ever want to re-home him that he will have to come back to us.
If you decide you want Sarge you will be required to make an appt. at your vet for a full check up, vaccination, neuter, heartworm preventative, flea treatment. If you have a good reference with the vet you can take him home as soon as I verify it, if your new there with no vet reference I will drop him off there on the date of his appt. and you can meet me there or pick him up when he's done. You must agree to continue to provide him with regular vet care as needed.
Good & Bad about Sarge:
I think he will need to have his ears checked. I believe he has gotten a few yeast infections in there. I read that cleaning them with a solution of alcohol & water clears that up and it does temporarily. I think a vet would put him on Otomax to clear it up permanently.
He recently got a hot spot on his rump/base of tail. I have taken care of this and it has healed well. I don't think you would notice if I didn't tell you but I want to include it because it could be an indication of allergies or skin sensitivity issues. It could have just been a rare occurrence. Besides that, he seems healthy and strong.
He does drool if he gets excited, nervous or sees food. He sneaks onto my couch sometimes (he needs a nice dog bed) I find it cute (I know, bad owner) so I dont yell at him. He gets down when he hears me coming. He listens outside & does not require a fenced yard if supervised. He will wander off if left unattended. He gets along great with other dogs (I have 3) and raccoon's (I help with a rehab also) so I assume if he doesn't mind the coons he wouldn't mind a cat? We do not have one though so I can't tell you for sure. He is afraid of my horses because they've chased him before. He's good with everyone he meets. I have 3 teens at home & 2 granddaughters (4 & 5) that visit & he's good with. I have noticed that little kids that are hyper and get in his face or jump around right next to him he gets nervous and does not like it. Calm little kids who are gentle he seems to love. So please, if you have very energetic little kids who show no fear of dogs and would be likely to go running up to him being silly - do not apply for this dog. I can not be sure he would adjust to that and would not feel comfortable putting him in a situation that makes him nervous enough to snap at someone and end up in the pound or put down because of it. He is a very calm, gentle giant of a dog who wants to be near you most of the time. He is not a dog that will go jogging with you or play fetch. His playing spurts last about 3 minutes then he's done.
I'm sure I've rambled way to much but I wanted to get the most important info out right up front. If you think you might be a good match for Sarge send me an email telling me about your family, age of your kids if any, animals, home environment he would be going to live in, if you've ever had large breeds before, if not - why you want one now.
If I think it will be a possibility of a match I will send all the photos, his story "from the previous owner" and any other info. you may wish to know.

There is a good mastiff fit for everyone that is willing to let them be a part of their family. The adoption fees may seem high, but even if you find one for free on a web site, chances are they will need to be brought current at the vet and the expense & time will be just as costly. Rescues will have all of this done prior to the adoption in most cases so Please, give a home to a rescue or shelter dog!
