4-month Presa Puppy to the rescue

Hey guys,
A funny thing happened last night. I was walking Penny, my 4-month old presa, and all of a sudden , dashing towards us, at full speed, I see a boxer that had gotten loose and was running like the wind. He was chasing a cat that was coming in our direction. I was pleasantly surprised to see Penny bark at the dog, but initially her bark was pathetic and totally contradicting her body language. She sounded like scared to death, with a sort of shrieking high pitched bark. But all of a sudden while doing this, her voice started to deepen and after a few seconds of intermittent baby??? bark she got this big dog kind of bark, very intimidating and she was trying to lunge at the dog.

The strange thing for me about this reaction is that I think she is going through the fear stage. Sometimes she gets afraid of people walking towards us. I also noticed that when we are at home, she seems more confident than when we go for a walk. (THis event I mentioned happened right outside our home).

Something similar happened to us last week while going for a walk, a big dog (Bulldog mix I guess) came to us barking and she was very scared. She confronted the dog but as soon as the dog moved back a little bit she tried to run away. With the boxer last night (in our yard) she never tried to escape and actually kept on barking and growling and barking way after the dog had already left.

Have you had any similar experiences? What do you think? Thanks!
Julio

(In the pictures, Penny was 3 months and a half)

Ours (now approaching 6 mos) was the same a couple months back, when she also first discovered her "big dog bark". She behaved pretty much the same at the time, but has become much more confident since - she'll stand her ground now every time, before and after an encounter, but without being overtly aggressive herself. She'll just give that big girl bark and focus intently on what has her attention. She even goes so far now as to move in front of me and sit, putting herself between me and a perceived danger.

Wow, that's so awesome! Of course no one wants their dogs to get into any altercation but it's amazing to see that protective instinct that you describe! Thanks for sharing!

Around 8 mos old is common for another fear stage too apparently, will see. It's great to watch their personalities develop though :)
