A Small Dog And A Stupid Owner

Hi All,

I'm so mad I could just spit nails....

I took the furry kids to our dog park today, after a long break (first because of the cold weather, then because they were sick, then because I kept them in quarantine).

We had a blast, chasing a ball, rolling in the snow, running, zooming around, playing....

Then this young fellow came along, with a Bernese Mountain dog, and a small Westie.

We stood talking for a few minutes with all the pups happily sniffing each other, and then it happened.....

The Westie, attacked Charlie.

Charlie, who is used to playing with little dogs, thought it was a game and started rolling the Westie in the snow.

Figuring the Westie may not enjoy the game, I went to grab Chuckie, when the owner went nuts and started kicking him like a maniac, and screaming GET YOUR F.....G DOG OFF MY DOG!!!"

At this point, I had Charlie by the harness, practically lifting him off the ground, while the Westie resumes his attack, and the guy is dancing around like some crazy wanna be boxer, throwing kicks in all directions like a maniac.

Katy (luckily on leash) was heading into full attack mode, and my Danny was starting to get upset and coming in with a worried look on his face, looking at me for direction.

Finally I had enough.
Throwing my head back, I used my Angry Mother voice.

GET YOUR DOG!!!!

Idiot stopped bouncing around, grabbed his dogs and left the park, yelling expletives over his shoulder.

The whole walk was ruined.
The dogs were wound up and upset, and me.... I was ready to kill someone :mad::mad:.

Oh no Elana. What a horrible thing to have happened. I think you were very restrained and polite to only say what you did. Sounds like that Westie has little dog syndrome. How is Charlie? Did he come off badly with any scratches or marks?

I'm lucky to have a big back yard with a wooden privacy fence for exercise. My dogs would not do well in a dog park. I do actually use dog parks for something. I use them at a distance to work on reactivity.

Can I ask a really stupid question? When you say 'dog park' do you mean a park where people happen to let dogs off lead? Or do you mean an actual park that's purpose is solely for dogs? That sounds really silly I know but over in the UK we don't talk about 'dog' parks!! Sorry..... something I've wondered for a while!!

That's not a stupid question. I don't know what Elana means, but here (in Indiana, USA), a dog park is a park that is fenced off just for dogs to run around off leash. Sometimes there is a big dog side and a little dog side. I know that other members in different countries do have different types of dog parks.

Hi Sarah and Boxergirl and @maryl

Charlie is fine, thanks for asking. He was just enjoying himself, and I don't even think he noticed that this crazy person was kicking him, as he was focusing on rolling this snarling, biting, little thing in the snow.

No such things as 'stupid questions' :).

When I mentioned 'dog park', I meant an off leash dog park. It's a park for everybody, but designated as an an off leash area for dogs as well as the rest of the public. Some of these areas are huge, and not fenced.

Calgary, the city where I live, has 150 official off leash areas (plus several unofficial off leash areas), where you can take your dog(s) off leash and let them run and play, and socialize with other dogs. Dogs, have to be under owner's control at all times. Here's a map to give you an idea, and a few pictures, to show you what some of our off leash dog parks look like.

Dogs, must be on leash in all public places unless it's an off leash areas.

I also have a sizable back yard, but when it comes to socializing with other dogs, playing, swimming and the freedom to run for miles, the back yard doesn't quite cut it. Yes, at times you run into crazy dogs, or even crazier owners, but most of the time it's loads of fun, with nice dogs and nice owners.

I was just talking with another dog owner, that I will have to start carrying bear spray again. Her eyes went all big, "For aggressive dogs?" she asked. "No, for crazy owners." was my response.

Dang Stupid Owners!!! Sorry you had to beat off the little monster. Glad Charlie thought it was fun and no one got any serious injuries.
Also glad you pulled the MOM voice out on the idiot.

Denna and I haven't gone to our off-leash park for a while... I've been meaning to take her back now that the dog-flu epidemic seems to be passed (I need to double-check that)... we only go to the BIG park, lots of room to walk away from idiots - although I've been lucky through 16 years of taking dogs there that we've never had a "major" incident. A few small scrapes, but owners are all helpful, and it's been less that I'd expect a toddler to get at any human playground, so I'll take it!

We spend more of our time hiking around the state parks these days, we have some good ones that are closer to home than the off-leash park. I use a flexi, so Denna gets to feel like she's off-leash most of the time, but we stay 'connected' and therefore legal.

Your pictures are beautiful! I hope you don't let this episode ruin your future enjoyment.

Hi Tina,

I don't let idiots drive me away from where I want to go with my pups, lol, but it is an annoyance, when one has to be on constant idiot alert.

We had moved to this area last Spring, and I still miss our old stomping grounds, where we used to walk before. It was a beautiful off leash area.

Here are a couple of pictures of our old off leash....

Thanks Sarah and @Nik,

Right now Mr Handsome, is laying here beside me, flat on his back, legs splayed out like a giant frog, sleeping with a big grin on his face.

He got to play with a big Pitbull at the park today. They had a blast together :).

glad no one was hurt! i think dog parks must be avoided when you have a large dog ...playing with a dog you know and friend with the owner is fine but no dog parks full of strangers....it s a recipe for a potential disaster..
