A tibetan mastiff as a pets as therapy dog?

I know of a few here in teh states who're therapy dogs. Its hard to do cause the tests (at least here) require off leash sit-stay *rolls eyes* but if you got her through her CGC equivlent I'm sure you can do that. I was talking to one lady, with a TM who does elderly therepy work, they had a regular lady they were visiting, dog LOVES her....one day her son came rushing in, in a hurry, had never met the dog....dog planted between the elderly lady and the intruder in no time flat.....no harm no foul, and hte elderly lady thought it was the best thing she'd seen in a while, and once her son got his heart out of his throat he thought the fact that the dog would guard his mother awesome too.

Interesting Ruth. I think I might get her tested and see what happens. Her down stay is no problem at all, her leash manners are great, and really I cant think of a reason not to do it, other than it will take up even more of my time but hey, you dont get dogs to be selfish do you?!

nope! I've been considering working Apollo towards getting his Therepy cert, they have a local program where dogs go into librarys and classrooms and get read to by kids who're having problems reading. The dog's job is to flop next to the kid and get petted and read to.....Apollo ADORES kids....

hahaha....Mooshi is that lazy she will sit/down stay as long as you let her. That girl has no concept of stand stay.

He'd probly do it no problem if I could bring a kid to stand next to him for that portion lol, I have yet to see a child he's not perfectly happy sitting and getting petted for, for extended periods of time.

You lucky people! With TM's... Big bundles of stubborn fur, I could just burrow in them!

Plus, you get to do fun certification stuff with your dogs :) I wonder when I'd be able to.. *sigh*

No idea where he is in relation to you of course, but he co-owns Apollo's dam and brother (both of whom live in the USA sorry). Maybe you can arrange to visit and meet a TM!

Do they make you bathe your dog before every visit for therapy work or is that only for hospital visits? I had read when looking into one program that you had to do that. Not a big deal for a short hair dog but a TM? That would be a deal killer for me!

That sort of requirement seems to vary from what I've looked at. They have to be CLEAN, but not all of them specify how recently the bath has to be.

Make sure you read the info here MM and I have posted, and the info here: http://www.tibetanmastiffinfo.com

I think I've been reading up on them ever since I saw both of your puppies. I'm gonna devour this link as well!

But eventually, practically, I know I'm gonna back off... For a dog with a double coat and that much hair, it wouldn't be fair to keep them here in a predominantly warm/hot environment. Though everywhere I've read speaks about how adaptable the breed is, I can see how hot Boone with a short coat and cold tiled floors (as an option) feels.

But it's still good to dream... :)
