Another rat!

I was out watering the grass with the dogs when I heard loud sqeaking noises behind me. I turned to find Diesel shaking a rat in his mouth! Squeak squeak said the rat. Diesel dropped the rat and it then flew matrix style straight at Kahlua.

“Leave it! Come!” I shouted from across the yard fearing for my dogs.

They both freeze and heads swivel to me. Diesel gives me a “look” and huffs whines and yips at me and makes to grab the rat again. I repeat the commands with an added “NOW” and a clap. And thank goodness they come running to me. I take them upstairs, lock them inside, grab a broom (for protection?) and head back down.

The rat is lying where they left it but still breathing. Ugh! Ugh!

I frantically call my husband who has left just that morning for yet another trip to the old house. And incoherently explained with frantic “what do i do what do i do??? It’s STILL alive!!!”

“Go ask the neighbor”

So I sought out our neighbor who kindly volunteered to beat the rat to death with a shovel.
I accepted the offer and when that business was done I inspected my dogs for injury.

Not so much as a scratch on Kahlua and Diesel had a pinprick of blood next to his penis which I thoroughly cleaned and checked the next morning and cleaned again.

But while my pups were physically fine they were emotionally needy the rest of the evening. Diesel spent a couple of hours insisting on being in my lap and held (unusual for him). After he calmed enough to crawl off my lap he spent the rest of the night being hugged and comforted by Kahlua.

Today just a few days later Diesel’s tiny wound is completely gone and they are on good spirits. Good enough spirits to silently judge me when I have my impromptu private dance parties in the living room.

So after this latest rat incident I noticed that Diesel keeps pooping right where they left the rat. I wonder if that is a new way of marking territory to warn other potential intruders he lives here and will defend his territory... Either that or its just an odd coincidence. lol

My Cora always seems to find DEAD rodents. She has contracted worms from this before... She has quite the sniffer on her!

Ugh! Worms! That's the worst!

I still don't understand how the rat was dumb enough to be in the yard while the dogs were out there.... Why didn't it just slip through the fence where it would be safe?

I've heard rats only come out during the day if they are starving. That might be why they are trying to get close to your house, ( in search of food ) the dogs are just doing what comes natural to them. I don't want my dogs messing w rats either, but even my 6 lbs schnauzer goes after them. I think as long as they are up to date on shots, should be fine.
You may want to set some traps where the dogs can't get to them if you start noticing heavy traffic.

Besides all that, Kaluah and Diesel look so sweet! :)

Well it was evening... I always save the watering until the last of the light of the day. So it was maybe 15 minutes to half an hour until full dark. More dusk than day. The zombie rat was during the day but that one was clearly not doing so great. The neighbor has apple trees, pear trees, walnut trees and there is fruit littering the ground of his yard. We also have a ton of blackberry bushes so food is not in particularly short supply but if I had to guess I would say the fruit trees and nut trees and berries are attracting them to the area. I am very diligent about rolling the garbage out weekly to the curb and it never piles up much. The neighbors say there isn't usually a lot of rats around. They could also be searching for water since it was such exceptionally hot and dry summer here.

If we end up getting a bunch of them I will definitely set up one of those electrocution traps but I am hoping I won't need to because I worry it would get some squirrels too and I really do like our cheeky grumpy little squirrels.
