Another raw question

Local store has beef brisket, packer style, in the bag for 1.47. My dogs seem to be okay with fat but it seems like a lot of fat on these. Is this something ya'll would feed?

Packer cut just means untrimmed. 1.47 seems high to me, but I am not in your area, so I don't know what you normally pay for meat. As far as the cut goes I would feed it (of course there is not much I wouldn't feed). You can feed the fat, if it seems excessive, I would feed it with bone or cut some off, as fat tends to cause excessively runny poos (in my dogs anyway). It won't hurt them just nasty to clean up. ;)

Thanks, OHF. In the past, during summer holidays we always could get brisket for .97, unfortunately, this seems to be the new norm. Other than beef hearts, this is the cheapest I can get beef.

If anyone else is reading this, what is brisket going for, this week in your local stores?

I haven't tried beef brisket, Titan is allergic to beef. :( He was allergy tested and it showed it could eat chicken. I've noticed in the last couple of weeks, his skin is getting bad again. Flaking, dark spots on the skin, and he's scratching. As most of you know, I bathe him once a week and brush him every day. I'm wondering if he's allergic to chicken. I just bought 40 lbs of leg quarters, 5 lbs of chicken hearts and 5 lbs of chicken livers. :( Suggestions for types of pork I could give him? I know the pork is going to cost me more but his skin started to improve and then it started to regress. HELP!!!!!

I like pork shoulder (usually called boston butt or picnic). Very dense, fibrous muscle. However, I feed the whole pig, in it's entirety to my dogs. I raise 2 a year specifically for them. When you are buying pork just watch out that it is not processed (smoked, aged, salted etc.) as that's not good for your dog.

PS: Boston butt also makes kick a** pulled BBQ :)

Thanks OHF! I'm wondering if it's because I was feeding him grocery store chicken but I've been feeding him un enhanced chicken for about a week. Do you think I need to give the un enhanced chicken a chance to see if will change?

What I meant, do you think giving the un enhanced chicken a chance to see if his skin improves?

NO SUGAR!!! Not even a little bite here and there. Try it for 2 weeks, if you don't see a difference then go back. We went raw over a year ago but until I totally stopped all sugar we were still fighting yeast. One little bite and the yeast seems to just explode. Have you ever seen mold on bread and how quick it spreads under the right conditions. BTW, no veggies, carbs = sugar. Also, no processed meats, this includes luncheon or smoked meat. The biggest culprit in Cane's diet was smoked turkey. He just loved them. We would get two each Thanksgiving and Christmas. We didn't think it would hurt him, after all it was meat, just smoked.

Antibiotics are also bad for yeast.

@angelbears. Titan eats zero sugar. I used to feed him deli turkey but cut that out 3 weeks ago. His diet is eggs and chicken.

I remember you posting about yeast loves sugar and I cut it out his diet.

Yes enhanced could be causing it! They can add sugars and salt and preservatives to the chicken. If he was doing well before, I would get some un-enhanced and try that for a few weeks before switching. That may be the culprit.

I now buy my chicken from texastripe.com which is un enhanced. He's been eating it for about a week. Just picked up my 40 lbs of chicken from texastripe last Sat. I'll give this chicken a few weeks, as you recommended OHF. Thank you so much for the advice!

The vet told my son, who previously owned Titan, it was yeast about a year. His skin shows: little bumps, flaking, patches of black areas, and scratching. The vet would subscribe cephalexin and steroids for a month. It would clear up the infection for about 2 months and it would return. This happened while Titan was on kibble.

Yep, yeast is a b***h to get rid of. I feel for you and Titan. How long has it been since you cut out the peanut butter and almond butter? The reason I ask is, I was told that while the body is detoxing the skin can get worse before it gets better.

Deb, I'm no expert so please take anything I say with a grain of salt. I have been dealing with skin issues for 2 1/2 years, I'm just relaying what I have experienced, doesn't mean I'm right.

I understand angelbears, sometimes experience is better than book knowledge. Titan hasn't had PB or AB for about 2 weeks. Let's just hope that this is his body detoxing...

Thanks again for the "experience" knowledge.

Enhanced chicken sucks, we're thinking its screwed with Arty's system, he doesn't appear to be able to tolerate chicken at all now, though I'm hoping that enough time off for his system to recover, will chane that.

My local grocery has boneless beef brisket for $4.49/lb if that helps. I can't check anyone else's prices online....

Ditto on feeding pork. I buy my two pork necks for treats and they love them.

Dang, I'll be thankful for my 1.47. I guess I'm just going to have to get used to it. Here, in Houston, we have always been able to find a meat for less a buck a pound. I guess the times they are a changing.

Yah well, living NY state makes things expensive even when you're NOT in NYC! Upstate where I am is better than downstate, but yah.

Cost of living is pretty cheap here. If you work for a national company and their salaries are based on a national average, you have a little of a bump but if you work local, wages are pretty low.

I would not want to live in NY, prices there scare me:scared2:
