We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Any vacuum experience

We use a Dyson. Pros -- excellent suction (our biggest 'challenge' is shedding from our IWH, lol), comparatively light and maneuverable, no bags to change. If it DOES get plugged up, the design makes it simple to disassemble and reassemble parts to clear plugs. It is also very durable. We have had ours for over five years and have only had to replace filters and one belt. I don't really have any cons, except it was more expensive than other brands -- but excellent value at the end of the day. Before we bought a Dyson, we went through three different vacuums from different manufactures in a little over two years. We also invested in a rug shampoo-er which is a godsend.

No mastiff here but I do have 3 VERY hairy dogs and I second both the Dyson and the suggestion to get a shampooer.

Ditto Dyson, one of the newer ball models. LOVE IT. Two dogs (one long haired), two cats (one long haired), plus two long haired humans, and carpet throughout the house (which I want GONE, but don't have the money to replace yet). You know those commercials where they apologize cause you have to empty the container more often? Yah, seriously about the only downside. Ok, it wasn't cheap, but it was worth every penny.

I went thru 2 vacuums in one year after I got my cat Taffy. Her fur just clogged up the internal workings and caused major damage. I decided to pay for the dyson and it has been the best decision ever. Now with two long haired cats, an Irish Setter and new EM I don't know how I could survive without it.
Carpet cleaners are also great. I have a spot cleaner which is wonderful for cleaning up puppy accidents and an upright for when they get past me with muddy paws :)

I am an Oreck girl. I have had mine for 8 yrs and still love it. It is light and easy. I have 1 belt replaced and 2 tune ups. My husband has even sucked up kids socks, no problem, didn't even clog it for a second, just sucked it on up into the bag. I like the bag system as it self closes as you pull them out and then all of the pet hair and pet smell is gone. It is light and easy to use, my 4yr old even helps with the vacuuming with no problems. Plus, the attachments come on a second canister seperate from the vacuum so my 7yr old can get in crannies behind chairs and in corners better. This helps with kids, cats, and dogs- all of our hair drives me crazy and I vacuum daily. My mom had a Dyson and it worked great, but it got too hard on her arthritis to use the handle and she has an Oreck now too- easier handle to hold. I wont own anything else

I recently purchased a Bissell Powerforce Helix. Love it~ It sucks up everything that isn't nailed down. The vacuum fit my current budget and I paid $49 at WalMart. I used to own an Oreck but it died...

Wow; we just use a cheap shop vac. But we don't have carpet anywhere. Ceramic tile & plank flooring. Also sucks up cobwebs; cleans out box fans & window air conditioners; any spills/accidents...

I WANT to get rid of my carpet. As soon as we can afford it.....
Can't say that I blame you. We really don't need carpeting in Florida; no need to keep the floors warm in winter...easier to keep clean from spills/accidents/fleas.
The plank flooring is awesome. Doesn't wear like hardwood; it kind of ages & looks prettier with time. I would imagine it would be very expensive though. Ours was salvaged from a department store that was demolished.

Is it weird that I want to see a picture of your floors? Lol

Have to say I noticed very little difference between the £200 Dyson and the £40 shop's own brand we replaced it with.

Dyson lover here too. Had it for almost ten years now and still going strong! Will definitely invest in another when this one is kaput.

Oh sweet, add me to the list of wanting to see your floors lol.

Yah cold floors are an issue here, which is part of the delay actually, we want to put in radient heat in most of the house, but thats really not cheap!

Currently using a Bissell Pet Hair Eraser, but we have the new Dyson Animal on our wish list.

The reason we want a switch: when we were moving from MO to TX, I vacuumed very well before sending our vacuum onto the moving truck with the rest of our belongings. We we're due to have a carpet clean the next day (part of our lease agreement), and the cleaning service requested that the carpets be vacuumed well beforehand. Because I have a mild case of OCD and I wanted to be sure and thoroughly clean along the walls, corners, etc. I borrowed one of my work friends' Dyson... Good lord, you would have thought I hadn't vacuumed in weeks. I was in awe, and now I'm determined to get my hands on one. :)

We also have a carpet cleaner on our wish list. Any recommendations? We already have the Bissell Spot Bot, but we're looking for an upright for large areas of carpet.

ok Ruby, I must see pics!!!!! I am shopping for new flooring now and saving my pennies. I had recently decided on hard wood look tile, for durability of the tile and the look of the wood. The only issue is I want to do the whole house ( sob- I have white tile in 3 rooms, wood in 2, and carpet in 5).You make a good argument for the plank...
