Anybody DOING anything with their big dogs?

Just wondering?

This is my Cane Corso, El Mesquital Vulcan, last weekend at a AKC Lure Coursing event in Tulsa, OK. He earned his CAT qualifying legs #8, #9 and #10 which got him his CAA (Coursing Ability Advanced) title.

He really loves to run.

Looks like he's having the time of his life. what sort of lure coursing group would that be? We have it here for the sighthounds but heaven forbid a non-sighthound should join. (bit snobby in that world here)

Hey Ron, Nice dog and great photos! I would love to take my GM to a lure coursing event. However I know he's not built for speed nor endurance. Hoping to get with a trainer and work my future pup in schutzhund. :)

AKC and UKC both allow non Sighthounds to run for Coursing Ability titles. Several levels of titles are available in each.

We don't have any kind of things like that around here for pooches. I'd love to get our puppy we're getting into doing something work related any way! May take him to his breeder to get him therapy dog certified if he's got what it takes for it. That's about all we have around here though!

Cool! Congrats!

Parka does some weight pull, Blue does some hunting with me. Eventually I will work Parka in PP work, but I'm waiting for him to mature more.

I live so remote that our options are really limited for our dogs, it sucks.

Having written that, our dogs are working dogs and work on our ranch everyday... No titles needed for that. :)

That is a dog enjoying himself!

Apollo could probly do Lure coursing, he's incredibly fast and agile, but I don't think I'd trust him to stay on course.....we did some weight pull for a bit, might do some again in a couple years once he's matured a bit.

Lure Coursing CAT testing coming up on 9/22 and 23 in Moriatry, NM.
Yea, I know! I actually saw that the other day and was planning on taking some of our Kai Ken. Recently one of our Kai Ken pups did really well at a Lure Coursing trial in Virginia (link)... So I wanna get some of our preservation stock out there to give it a try too.

I didn't even consider Blue, maybe I should take him too. He does love to chase rabbits! :)

There is a schutzhund club that I have met with several times in Los Alamos, actually Michael Ellis trains with them a lot... but they all seemed very put-off by Blue's aggression. So we just stopped going. I haven't taken Parka, he's not a very "sporty" dog.

When I was in San Diego I would take my Tosa to run with a lure coursing group. She loved it! As for my dogs I do SAR, personal protection, ring sport, weight pulling, dock diving, and they are therapy/ reading dogs. They go to schools and kids who need help reading read to the dogs. Dogs with jobs are better pets!

A bout of kennel cough has thrown us off course for a while, but we're taking novice obedience and conformation classes. I hope to do therapy work with him when he is older. This is the first dog I've started any competitive endeavors with.

Congrats on all your accomplishments!

Wow, all that training is a ton of man hours. Are you lucky enough that your dogs are your full time job?
