Back to the Vet tomorrow.. Smell is back (but different - not fishy) and under belly is dark pink this morning. Vet can fit her in tomorrow, I am at a loss as to what to think. Can food have any part in this?

Sorry to hear that. It can be a food allergy could also be a yeast infection. Also a lot of times vets will call it an allergy when in fact it's a yeast infection. Has she been on any antibiotics or other meds recently?

Leelee,

No antibiotics ever and the meds she takes are her heartworm preventative and her frontline. When I take her tomorrow, what do I need the vet to do to check for a yeast infection?

What kind of food is she on?
I am sorry to hear, strange though. Let us know what the vet says

Large breed Diamond Dog food. She has been on it since we got her though... I am lost. It's soo strange and we have never had these kind of issues before. I bathed her after the vet the other day with an odor removing shampoo (same stuff as always..) and everything was fine. Came downstairs to take her out around 5am and you could smell her from the top of the stairs. Again. Just a different smell..

For yeast they take a scrapping of skin. Has she lost any fur? Is she chewing at herself at all? Usually food allergies show up differently then in a smell.

No fur loss that I can see.. But today her underbelly where there is little hair and it is usually pale pink, is like really dark pink today. That area has never been this color. I noticed it when I was checking her over earlier.

Can you tell where the smell is coming from? Do her ears smell at all? Did you wash her bedding in anything new or the shampoo you used maybe that irratated her? Those would be possibilites, however that would not explain the smell....

No smell in her ears.. Her mouth looks fine and nothing but normal dog breath there. The smell is all over her. From her head to her rump. And no I haven't used anything new at all. I can't think how to explain the smell other than really really dirty dog. The anal gland smell was different. She had a bath a few days ago and now she smells like she hasn't been bathed in years. It is a very potent smell, I mean like smell it rooms away potent.. Like a dirty musky smell. She leaves the smell where ever she's been. The rug, her pillow, the couch :(

In addition, she isn't off leash outside right now due to the neighbors new dog that is very aggressive and I don't trust. So, there is no way she could have gotten into anything outdoors.

Anal glands again.. This can't be normal. The vet said that I need to bring her in when the "smell" starts and he will take care of it as well as keep track of it. Apparently there is a procedure she could have done if it doesn't stop. Why have we never had problems before now, I mean there has to be a reason this is happening now. He made no recommendations on what we can do when asked. He just said some dogs are like this. He also said instead of coming in he could show us how to do it.. Yeah, no. Does or has anyone ever had this problem with their dog/s ?

One of my APBTs has to have his expressed. I just do it myself when he gets his weekly bath. It's pretty easy.

Usually it's because of soft stool. Not to be to graffic but are her poops soft or firm? I'm no expert on this subject but I know that food can be a factor.

Her poop is like in between.. It isn't overly firm like hard, but it's soft and formed. I asked about her food b/c I think it was mentioned last time and he didn't think changing it would make that much of a difference. He said her coat looked great and her weight was good, a little big, but good. He said changing it might do more harm than good. I wish I knew why all the sudden this was an issue..

My poodle mix had the same problem with her anal glands needing regular attention and the poor bugger had them expressed 11 times in 6 months at a nice profit for the vet, then we moved home and our new vet basically offered us the procedure, which was minor job and not expensive and she has had no problems with the anal glands and no related problems from the operation. It wasn't expensive either. Basically what I'm saying is go for the procedure. The vet also said these problems can be brought on by many different causes and it is hard to identify which.

Maybe I should.. I mean this is the 2nd time in like a week and a half. There is nothing I can think that has changed. I am a stay at home mom working on my graduate degree from home, she is with me always and has the same routine daily. No food changes, no schedule changes, we take the same walk twice daily so she gets her exercise, her bedding is washed in the same detergent every 4 or 5 days (more often when the stink starts..), no people food (well, with kids I am sure she gets some..), same bones from the vet's off and TSC (as well as bones from meals). It just baffles me. We try to be consistent in all things with her.. I will look into that if this continues. Thank you Bentley, leelee, and Cody for all your help :)

Here is my anal gland schpeel: First off, are you familiar with what anal glands are? Just in case, and maybe for others reading, I'll explain. They are two sacs on either side of the inside of the rectum. They are not very deep and are positioned at 10:00 and 2:00. The original purpose of these delightful little sacs was for scenting. Whenever a dog (or cat for that matter) has a bowel movement, the poop should be firm enough to express the anal glands as the poop comes out - like popping two big zits!! I know, totally gross and crude, but true. What happens with dogs that have 'anal gland issues' is one or more of a few things.
First, and most often, the dog is just having soft stools. It doesn't have to be diarrhea, formed, but soft is enough. This is often diet related. If this is the case, simple fix, slowly switch foods. My Pitty had a similar problem. After 5 years, we finally found the right food to switch to and, presto, firm poops! No more pealing poop out of the grass for us! The food you are currently feeding may be good in the other departments, but if it isn't good in all of them, a switch is in order! Sometimes just adding a probiotic formulated for dogs to a food is enough to solve the problem. Parasites could also be the culprit - like Giardia!
Next, they could be infected. Maybe she had a bout of diarrhea and they filled and filled and filled and couldn't express. The system is now backed up. They can get so full and inflamed, that they get infected. This means you have to have them expressed even more than usual, and they are painful. This can typically be seen by a vet when they are expressed because the goo that comes out is green (gross), white or bloody.
Lastly, it could be positional. If the little opening to the sac is not 'facing the right way' no matter how firm her poops are, those sacs aren't gonna pop. There isn't much you can do for these guys but constant visits to the vet or groomer or surgery.
Surgery is an option, but, risky. Besides the risks of anesthesia, let's face it, the inside of the rectum is not the most sterile place in the world. The risk of infection is very high. Also, if the doctor has an oops and slips, your dog may never be able to hold her poop in again! Scary, but true. The muscles around the rectum are very important. I have seen the surgery done successfully many times, but the risk is there.
You can try adding some prescription food to her diet (Purina OM, or Science Diet w/d) I don't particularly like either of these companies, but their prescription foods are very effective. That is high in fiber and will help firm up her poops. (or you can add some metamucil to her food) If a few weeks of this works and the anal gland problems disappear, then you know it is food related. In order for this little 'food trial' to be really effective, you would have to cut back on the treats for the time so you can be sure your experiment is controlled. Both of my dogs have happy anal glands now. The only time I worry about them is about 3 days after diarrhea clears up (usually from getting into something). Then I just do it and don't worry. I know a girl with a Presa that was giving yogurt as a probiotic and he couldn't tolerate it, so he always had anal gland problems because his poops were always soft. She stopped that and the problem stopped.
I recommend that you don't quickly jump to surgery. There are many other permanent fixes. Good luck and let me know if this helps!
