Backpack for Dogo Argentino?

Hi everyone!

I was just looking for some suggestions and tips for getting a backpack for my 9 month old Dogo.

I'm looking for suggestions on good brands if anyone knows of any they can reccomend. Also, what is a good age to start adding a bit of weight? Eventually when he is at a decent age it wouldn't be anything crazy, a small water bottle or two.

Thanks if anyone has any information :)

I like RuffWear - they have a backpack where it's a harness plus saddlebags, so it's easy to pack up the bag when it's off the dog, then attach it after the harness is already on.

We have the XL version - which was too big for our 100lb DaneX (even though he did wear it a few times), but is just right for Denna (143lbs, so far).
Here are some pictures of it: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.484046045005919.1073741826.303661206377738
Denna's probably closer to 135lbs in the pictures.

I will say, just 2lbs - one water bottle in each side - does make a difference in how much energy is expended on a walk, so take it slow and build up in weight. Keeping the sides balanced can also be interesting, so having lots of small bags of stuff that you can move around to get things even is helpful, too.

Awesome! I didn't even think about it shuffling around inside the pack. I was looking at Ruffwear today and the Ceasar Milan backpack, Ruffwear seems to be the number one pick! Really looking forward to working up to the water bottles eventually since he does get a one hour walk in the morning and one hour at night. Thankfully the weather is getting better now too. Thanks a lot for the tips and cute pics! :)

I recently got the ruffwear approach backpack for Hector. It's not the same one Denna has. I believe Denna has the palisades. Mine was a bit small even though I bought the largest size, but I think he will be okay. I don't really like how the straps around the neck/shoulder are small. I might have to sew on some fleece pads. I put small sandbag weights (4 lbs) from my ankle weights that were removable in his pack.

Thanks Hector! The sandbag weights are also a great idea! I now have a few things to go with once we work up to it :) He will love it.

I have a back pack for my akita and he loves it. I only use it when the weather is cool so not in the hot summer months as it makes them too hot. As for weight be careful when bones are still growing and soft. I would start with just some of your stuff like house keys and phone etc. Then move up slowly with half bottles of water for a while until you are sure its not an effort and move up from there. If i remember correctly a dog should be able to eventually carry between 20 and 30 percent of their body weight in cooler months and depending on fitness and ability. But please be sure to do it slow and steady while still a growing pup.

Oh yes, I would definitely not over do it. I'm not even sure if I'd add any weight until he is 2 years, and only put things in it such as keys and phone like you mention in the meantime. I think he will really enjoy it!

Just a little update. After 4 weeks, the backpack came in the mail. Here is a pick above with his wagging tail.

The pack works GREAT. I only have put my keys and phone in it, and he doesn't pull at all anymore. He is starting to tie the backpack to a walk now, so he gets excited. Really loving it! Looking foward to putting proper weight in it in the future.

How much does he weigh and how much weight do you have in the back pack? I also have a 10 month old dogo wondering if she would like a backpack.

He weighed 97 pounds a couple months ago. And he is 11 and a half months old right now.

Right now because he is still growing I just have my cellphone, keys and poop bags in his backpack.

I cannot believe how much of a difference the backpack is. It is AMAZING. I'm now training him to try to walk without the prong collar I have, and so far so good. (he can be a bit of a puller if there are squirrels or ducks around)

The last time I walked him with my friend and her two dogs I added a little extra weight. It was just one large battery on each side of the pack. I just wanted to test to see the difference. She had her backpack on her shepherd mix too, and both walked great.

I would totally suggest a backpack for your Dogo :) It is fantastic, and once I can add the proper weight when he is older it will be even better!

Also, he did not need any time to adjust. As long as he gets to go for his walks, I could dress him up in a Santa costume and he would be fine with it.

i need to get my dogo off the prong too once i take it off he pulls like a beast. he has good days too but he likes to work his muscels n pull against me.
Do you have your dogo pull weight? i noticed he pulls less on me after starting up some weight pulling maybe you can try that if you dont already

He is good if it is just me walking him with his flat collar. But when I walk with my friend and he two dogs he likes to pull, so I have the prong collar on him for that. Once I add more weight into the packback when he is older it should be a lot better.

I was actually planning on buying him a harness for weight pulling! There is a large desolate field near us and I would love to get him started on that. I've been looking at a lot of different harnesses and will most likely purchase from here http://www.mightyharness.com/ in the next couple of months when I can afford it. I'm really excited to get him started on that.

Thank you! :)

I had trouble with the one ear, it seemed like the doctor cropped one of them smaller than the other. But it ended up standing up on it's own thankfully.

So, Bain's Dog Whisperer Backpack broke. I'm not surprised. Now he has the Ruffwear Approach Backpack, the one I should have bought to begin with. And I'm VERY impressed.058.jpg Full review here: http://gogodogo.ca/?p=81 I love the use of the pack! He's wiped out when we get home.
