We haven't gone a walk yet (will do tonight after work) but so far I really like this pack, the pockets are HUGE! It's fairly easy to put on and adjust straps. The straps are way too long but that's an easy fix. Also the packs can be removed (velcro and clip) so if we stop for a while I can take the packs off and it becomes a vest! I'll try and update after our walk :)

Ooo! I love it. I will have to get one for Claymore when he is done growing. I love the idea and I like how that one fits. I ts awesome to see one on a dog.

So far I'm a big fan of this pack...if it passes the walking test I'll let everyone know. Also...the straps are VERY adjustable, I purchased the XL one (25" - 41" girth) and there is plenty of room for Kujo to grow into.

First walk test was good...I had a bottle of water in each pocket to help with balance...it did want to slip to the right side, but I think I need to play with the adjustments a bit more. I can't believe how BIG the pockets are! I'm hoping Kujo grows into a bit more, I think when he thickens up a bit it won't want to slip as much, I guess time will tell.

Walk test #2 will commence tonight, we'll go a bit further this time. My only concern is I don't want to over-pack the pack until he's used to the weight, for starters how heavy do you think the pack should be?

I'd start slowly right now. When we started our shepherd off we used water bottles and then cans of tuna. I wouldn't go to a full 1/3 until he was at least 18 months if not 2.

OK, that's what I was thinking as well. Thanks Smart :)

Bear Backpack.jpgBear wears a back pack as well during the cooler months, I don't let him wear it when the temperature gets over about 22 or 75 degree. its getting a bit old now and a bit tight so am careful how long he has it on for as well but he is great wearing it and I love it because he can carry all sorts like water, poo bags, keys, phone, money. I mean who is going to try and rob an Akita? He also loves having a job to do and is a different dog when he is wearing it, he walks amazing, not interested in sniffing etc. Its like he is a little boy given a big mans job and takes it to heart and wants to please. This picture was about a month ago on our way to our pets as therapy visit, first we go for a nice walk around a small boating lake at a city park.

Nice looking pack! Sits well on him too!

As a side note- for hiking/backpacking I picked up Platypus collapsible water bottles for Nadia's pack. I had heard a story about how another hiker's dog had actually broken a rib on a hard sided water bottle in his pack when the dog slipped during a rock scramble and it made me rethink the hard bottles I had been using. Having an injured 118lb dog out in the woods is not my idea of fun.

I've been using these now for a couple of years and I love them. They come in a couple different sizes and you can also buy the pull-tops separately too. I like the pull tops because Nadia will drink right from the bottle without needing a bowl (less mess and wastes less water that way).
