Hiker eats his own dog to avoid starving to death

By Natalie O'Neill November 2, 2013 | 3:56pm

Man bit dog.

A stranded hiker was forced to eat the beloved pooch who saved his life after nearly starving to death in the Canadian wilderness.

Marco Lavoie, 44, ate his German Shepherd after a bear destroyed his canoe and food supply — leaving him 800 miles outside Montreal for three months, the Canadian news agency QMI reports.

The dog chased away the bear, rescuing his master — but Lavoie killed his loyal friend with a rock three days later after struggling to find food, a source told QMI.

Survival experts praised the outdoorsman for using reason in an extreme situation, explaining food is scarce in the frigid northern climate, near the Nottaway River — and that he may have become too weak to overpower the dog, if he had waited longer.

“He survived because he made good decisions. Eating his dog was one of them,†Andre Francois Bourbeau, an author of a survival guide, told the paper.

“Hunger squeezes you so much that you would accept food that’s not normally possible,†Bourbeau said.

There are only a few edible plants in the area but starvation generally doesn’t strike for 30 days, which animal lovers were quick to point out – claiming he chowed down on his furry friend too soon.

“He killed and ate his dog (who had saved him) after 3 days. Then he survived another 3 months. Dog didn’t need to die,†tweeted @Gerry Dales.

Added @AmeliaRose, “This is vile. I’d rather die than kill and eat my dog to stay alive.â€

Lavoie was rescued by helicopter on Wednesday and had lost 90 pounds, nearly half of his body weight. He also suffered from hypothermia and couldn’t speak.

He is now in critical condition.

This story was brought up in another forum I frequent.
Consensence of opinion is that the man was ill prepared to survive in the wilderness given the fact that he was alone, and left no one a message as to where he was going and when to expect him back.
Knowing he was in bear country and not preparing for marauding bears that might have destroyed his food supply and property.
I'm sure the dog would have understood what he did and why he did it, but if he had prepared properly it would have probably been unnecessary to eat his dog.

Three days!?! C'mon man...a rock to the dome after three days? Ever heard of a fish trap? You're on a damn river...it's not like there aren't any animals in the Canadian Wilderness either...get off your ass and go hunt something (with your dog). Most any dog can at least catch wood rats...

um... yea... NOT!

The GSD probably could have brought him dinner in the form or rodents or rabbits if he'd let it.
You can survive on just water for more than 3 days. (at least I could, I have "reserves")
Kill my friend? No.

I realize that I've never been in that desperate a situation-but I truly believe I would never be able to do that. And, if I did I sure as hell wouldn't ever tell the whole freaking world about it.

I'm pretty sure I'm not capable of killing and eating my dog, no matter how bad off I was. Then again, I'd never put myself in that situation in the first place.
If you plan to go out for that amount of time, you go prepared. Side arm. I would have been eating bear.

Agree 100%.

I mean, none of us can really say what we would do unless put in those circumstances. I think 3 days is a bit early to be deciding to eat the dog but lord knows he may have paniced.

Mind you, I am going to say right now that neither I nor Agnes would survive 3 months in the wilderness. haha! She is far too clumsy right now to EVER figure out hunting and I would not be able to hunt and am allergic to fish.
