Run free Cecil.
You have my sincerest condolences, it hurts to lose a loved family pet.

The guy is a ass wipe. He has already been prosecuted for illegal hunting and his insurance had to payout for sexual harassment. Sounds like puny penis syndrome to me.

It was 40 hours after the bow shot that they tracked Cecil and killed him with a gun. And then they tried to destroy the tracking collar. This is not the first time he's taken an animal illegally. He has a history of shooting a bear 40 miles outside of a permitted area, then transported the carcass to a legal area and lied about it. He was caught and charged with a felony. He profile is gone now, but he's a member of Safari Club International, credited with 50+ kills of every kind of beautiful animal you can think of. I don't believe his claim of ignorance. And his statement of "apology" is the worst I've ever seen. “Again, I deeply regret that my pursuit of an activity I love and practice responsibly and legally resulted in the taking of this lion.”

This is sad. I really hope we extradite him back there to face charges. They charged his guide and a land owner whose land they were on with poaching. I read that he had cubs who will probably be killed by another male lion. : (

Things will calm down. He will be able to restart his practice but hopefully, he will have lost enough money that he can't go around blowing 50,000 for a canned hunt.

Breaks my heart and makes me furious at the same time. I wish I would stop seeing the pics of his "hunts" in all my feeds.. makes me see red every time.
The only good I can think of here is that maybe just maybe it will bring awareness to the travesty that it is legal in some situations to hunt endangered species.
Really there ought to be a ban on hunting any endangered species. Maybe this will bring enough scrutiny to make such a ban a reality. Plenty of overpopulated animals out there to hunt.

I thought from O P's first post that this was a personal pet.
I'm a hunter myself but I feel strongly that hunts should be wild game and fair chase,
Cecil apparently was not truly wild and as such was not a fair chase hunt.
I have little respect for someone who would do this, might as well go to the circus and shoot animals.

I am in the if it's not attacking you, you are not going to eat it, if you don't need to wear it as clothing don't shoot it crowd. There may other circumstances that warrant shooting an animal but the above mentioned are the best reasons. Shooting for a wall mount is not a good reason. I know many get angry because they deal with Wolves or bear and think these animals should be killed off like they were 100 years ago. If you feel this way for what purpose do you live in the country. Is it not to bein wild places? Places that are virtually untouched by man? What gives people the right to say this animal should go or that animal should stay? Learn to live with predators or live in the city or better yet live with your mom so she can protect you.

Most trophy hunters are responsible hunters, nothing is wasted.
Yes they may only take the head and or skin, but the game they harvest
Goes to feed many people who are needy and hungry. The money spent by these hunters
Stimulates the local economy people are employed by other than criminal elements.
Hunters by far contribute more money towards conservation than any animal rights orgizination,
It is that way in Africa as it is here in the United States. That's a fact that PETA and the Humane Society
Don't want the public to know about.
There are douch bags out there, don't get me wrong, but by and far the majority of hunters abide by the rules,
Pride themselves in fair chase and ethical hunting, no one is working harder to expose the douch bags and bring them to justice.

As much as I hate the thought personally I know you are right DDSK. We are friends with some big game hunters and know how much they do for conservation as well as the villages they encounter on their hunts. That being said, I hope they get extradition on this guy and he gets a free trip back to Africa.

It appears as if his pups are now in danger: 20+ from four different lions. From articles I am reading, they may be killed by the new alpha. I hope the park rangers protect them. I saw an article where his uncle is circling the wagon and looking after the babies. The whole thing really makes me sick to my stomach.

So, I wish your basic gestalt was shared by the tool dentist who was all about "big game hunts are awesome!". There was nothing about this hunt that suggested using every bit of the animal for food. He had a big elephant or hippo in his site after this particular hunt (I hate to use the word "hunt", because he was a tool who used assistants to kill his game), and he was just after the bragging rights.

This person, makes every hunter look like a coward. I hear what you are saying, but at the end of the day, this d-bag dentist makes for a great argument against hunting. I hope more people come out and explain how douche-worthy he is? His actions place a huge black mark against hunters who play by the rules. I have some ambivalent feelings towards people who hunt animals: I think if the hunt is being utilized for food, I can make this okay in my mind. My Father hunted quail while I was growing up, and he is a veterinarian: trust me, every bit of said quail was utilized or gifted to people who could use it (feathers, etc).

A person who hunts for just the thrill of it? Meh, it makes me sick. Sorry, JMHO.

It is highly unlikely any of the previous generation cubs will make it alive. Both wild and domestic cats will readily kill their rival's offspring and they are very diligent about it,to preserve their DNA.

Which absolutely sucks but it, sadly, is the natural way of things.
Well, natural except for the asshole who decided to screw it up because he has an inadequate man-unit and must compensate by killing a helpless animal so he can display its head on his suburban McMansion wall. o_O

I agree with your post Liz. The following is NOT against you, just my profound anger at the situation:

Yeah, that breaks my heart. Said dentist frick'ed up the natural way of things and caused a cascade of horrible circumstances and the pups lose. Yes, horrible things happen in the cycle of life, but this horrible person caused an unnatural circumstance to occur in the wild, and the pride suffers for it.

I hate that I am so angry about this, but it presents another stellar portrait of the "ugly American" acting like a complete and utter sociopath.
