Coping with loss of our Eng Mastiff

Hello, new here, my name is Scott and we had to put down our English Mastiff of 11 years just yesterday due to stomach cancer. This never gets any easier losing a dog (I thought I'd handle it better since I've been through it before).

Extremely hard to go through this, but I know we will get over it, and take comfort knowing we gave him a good home and fun filled life. He brought us so much happiness over the years and we deeply miss him.

We plan to get another English Mastiff in the future, I just wanted to introduce myself and hope at some point to find a mastiff pup here in Colorado.

Hi Scott, I am so sorry for your loss. No, it is never easy, Ugh, I know how hard it is, very painful. Just keep remembering like you said what a great home you gave him and love and fun. It is a healing process as you know. Step by step, day by day. I wish you the best....welcome to the forum. Reach out whenever you need. take it easy...

Thank you for the sympathies. As much as I want to find another English Mastiff immediately, I feel we need to grieve and let some time pass.

Hoping to find a referral for a reputable English Mastiff breeder here at some point in the near future. Not sure if trying to get on a waiting list for a pup is too soon at this stage.

I personally would wait, give yourself time to heal your loss and when you bring a new one home it is better to have a clear head and a new start. I had a Pekignese for 14 years and waited a year before I got Zeela (how do you like that going from a Pekignese to a Cane Corso?) anyway, it was still hard and I still sometimes call Zeela my Pekignese's name, Peekaboo, and I have Zeela for 6 months now. It is just my opinion to heal your heart first. You will know when it is time...I did.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Scott. It never gets any easier. When you're ready, we'd love to see pictures and hear more about him. It's good to smile at all the special memories they leave us with. Even if there are some tears mixed in.

All we can do is give them the best possible home and full life which you did. I would also take comfort in the fact that 11 years seems outstanding for such a massive dog, the longevity could very well be from the excellent life you provided.

Thanks again for the comments/support. This was one of our favorite pictures of Higgins who was the most gentle dog we have ever owned.

We know the right thing is to wait, but I can't stop looking online at EM breeders online today. I do agree that we need about a year before we are ready, but I remember we spent about 6 months before we found our Higgins around 2007. There is just no question that our next dog will be another English mastiff. Wife and I both love these gentle giants more than anything.

Will be lurking around this forum for quite some time hoping to find a responsible breeder in Colorado, and hopefully get on a waiting list for a litter in the coming year or so.

sorry for your loss , it is a very sad time ........ the reason to wait is for what ? I lose a dog it crushes my heart , I go home to 5 or 15 more and I still grieve for the one I lost , each successive dog I've lost has increased my understanding ,respect and attachment for them , and every one that followed is/was better off for them ....... as Boxergirl said , it never gets easier , it may actually get harder ..... it also gets more worth it , at least to folks like me ......... I had a thought the other day , I've outlived a lot of dogs , and it was best for them they didn't outlive me ......... i'm sure your next pup will benefit from your Higgins , he looked to be pretty happy in his pic ...........

Sorry for your loss.
The right thing to do is whatever is right for you and your family. Personally I find getting a new pet helps me because I have someone to focus on. The new pet doesn't replace the previous pet but gives me someone to focus on.
