Hey guys,
I have been looking into different dry food options for my DDB puppy. I will be picking him up the week of Feb 17th and need to finalize on this before that.
Obviously I am going to start him off on what the breeder has him on, and gradually transition him to the new variety. There is a lot of information out there in terms of Protein content, Ca content, Ca to Ph ratios, large breed puppy food versus all life stages food, and the list goes on forever. So there are a lot of variables and obviously there is no correct answer or right choice, so to speak as we are dealing with living beings here. Every animal/human is different and will react differently to different foods.
The one constant that is important for me is that I offer the best quality food available to my boy. After countless hours of reading, it seems to me that Champion Pet Foods has done a very good job in listing the ingredients/nutrition analysis and they also claim of using high quality regional ingredients. In no way I am saying, Orijen or Acana are the best foods, but to me it seems that they definitely are among the top quality kibble out there. Also they are great contenders to be the puppies first food choice and based on how the puppy reacts to it, things can be changed.
Now, getting down to the main details of the question, as far as for the most part, the Ca to Ph ratios and also the Ca numbers by itself seemed normal in both cases (below 2% for both). The caloric value for 250ml cup size for both is almost the same. The only notable difference I could observe from the nutrition label and that other people have been pointing out over the web is the protein content. Orijen states it at 38% for LBP and Acana has it at 32%. I am very skeptical when I say this, but to me that does not sound like a big different to make a choice.
Please provide your valuable feedback? Hoping to learn a lot and contribute to the community.
