DDB Pups from birth to five weeks. Photo overload.

Hanna had to have a c-section on Oct 25th due to stuck puppy. We lost two :( but had six healthy pups! 3 males 3 females. The largest pup weighed 17oz. and the smallest female 13oz.

5 out of 6 already have forever homes. The last female is ours.

When we got home with Hanna all medicated, she did not accept the pups at first and refused to nurse. It took my husband and I both to hold her down and put the pups on her one by one. We had to do that every two hours for the first day and half.

Also, since Hanna was a first time mom, she also did not clean the pups until day three. So, we were stuck with potty duty after each nursing. Wiping each pup with a soft wet cloth until they pottied (pups are born not knowing how to potty).

Then the pups went into their warming box. This was a plastic bin with a towel inside and a heating pad underneath the bin. A towel draped over the top helped keep out drafts.

Here is a pup in the box.

As the first week came to an end, the pups had doubled their birth weight. Hanna was nursing on her own and cleaning the pups. Our whelping box has removeable guard rails to help prevent accidental squishings - but I still worry - and I monitored the nursings for the first two weeks.

Pups at one week old. Weighed about 2 lbs. each.

After two weeks pups were 4 lbs! We were feeding Hanna twice her normal amount of dry food, PLUS our homemade wet food (deer, rice, veggies), PLUS 2 cups of milk, PLUS 1 cup cottage cheese DAILY. And she still lost weight nursing these pups!

At two weeks their eyes were just beginning to open...

At three weeks the largest pup weighed 6 lbs.! The rest were between 4.5 and 5.5 lbs.

And that's when Hanna decided it was time to start weaning them!

So, we made a puppy gruel out of puppy food, milk, and warm water. I think my blender has seen more use in the last two weeks than in it's entire lifetime.

And we limited the nursings to 2 in the middle of the night.

Week 3-4 the pups started trying to get up. They were a bit more mobile. And as they reached the 4 week mark, the railings on the whelping box had to come out. Some of the larger pups were trying to get on it.

One of Hanna and pups. I think they were just under three weeks here...

The smallest pup, we nicknamed Dr. Evil's MINI ME. Or just MINI ME. She is the first on her feet and running. Maybe it's because her brothers & sisters are so much heavier than her. Lol.

At five weeks the pups had their first vet visit. Our vet makes farm calls  which is very convenient.
All the pups got a clean bill of health last Friday. They are almost ready to go to their new homes.

All their puppy teeth are in and we are decreasing the liquid in the mash. Some of the larger pups have even tried dry kibble.

We get them to sleep through the night with the meat treat. It's fresh ground lean deer meat - given raw just before bedtime. ALL the pups love the meat treat! And it doesn't upset their digestive system.

week 5-6

The pups are no longer just in the whelping box. We have cordoned off my dining area and part of the kitchen for them. They play with each other and love their new toys.

Hanna is starting to put weight back on. No more nursings since week 4-1/2.

Later this week the pups will get their last deworming (we have been doing it weekly since 2 weeks) and their 5-in-1 vaccination.

Then they are ready for their forever homes. 3 out of 5 of our puppy buyers have either owned a DDB or currently own one and this will be their second.
Here they are at 5 weeks. The one on the purple blanket is OURS :D.

I will miss them. But it's been a long road. Not just the pups - but all the waiting we have done: waiting for Hanna/Hagrid to mature, all the health testing, showing Hanna and Hagrid, the endless string of vet visits, pregnancy checkups, waiting for the pups to get here, and then time seemed to FLY once the pups were here.

Since I've was asked this before...

We did not buy the whelping box. My husband made it out of plywood in his shop.

It measures about 57" across and 48" front to back.

Here are the two puppy photos again -
