diarrhea

Millie has had loose stools for a couple if days.... the kind of ones that leave a mess on the grass after pick up (sorry!) so I started her on rice and chicken and canned pumpkin. I may have got carried away with the pumpkin as just now her poo was pretty much liquid. Can too much pumpkin have the opposite effect? If this carries on over the weekend I will obviously take her to the vet on Monday. What's the best thing to do tonight? Chicken and rice (minus pumpkin) or hold back food until the morning?

I would try chicken and rice minus the pumpkin. Usually when we run into those issues we just do boiled chicken and white rice. Does the poo have an especially bad smell or normal? Make sure she drinks enough water to make up for the diareah

Just a normal yucky poo smell. Smellier than a nice firm poo (can't believe I'm talking poo texture and smell!) but I suppose diarrhoea is smellier?!?! Bit mucous-y.

no big deal if no mucus or blood in stool just reduce food give some rice....no need for vet if everything else normal

As gilles mentioned blood and mucus in the stool would be a sign to go see the vet. A weird or unusual smell to the poop is another sign.

Yes too much pumpkin can cause loose stools. Stick with cooked chicken and rice and if that doesn't improve, try cooked beef and rice or just cooked ground beef. Does she have any worms? Did she eat something new ? New bag of food? New brand of food? New protein? Any food allergies? Also look into a probiotic. I used fortiflora when Hector was on 2 months of antibiotics and it really truly helped. No diarrhea. Otherwise he always has squirty poops for weeks.

No worms. Did give gammon scraps on Tuesday. Maybe that as it's quite salty. And then too much pumpkin has probably made it worse. Pepto bismol? I have some in the cupboard but had no idea a dog could take it!!

Ooooo... salty pork? yep, that could do it if you gave too much ("too much" being an amount unique to the specific dog).

I'd skip a meal, then do a SMALL meal of plain chicken and rice... then work back up to a regular meal if all goes well. Make sure the chicken you're using isn't "salt enhanced" (package should show <4mg of sodium per 4oz/100g serving).

I also add probiotics during an upset... and we have some herbal pills from onlynaturalpet-dot-com called "GI Support" that are awesome for this sort of upset. I always keeps some of those on hand.

Hope it passes quick!

Thanks all! Will try those things! Fingers crossed because she's stinking out my house with her wind too!

Smecta, if you can get it it's pure magic. Fast her for twelve hours, plain chicken and rice after, for a couple of days, until you see a firm poop. Make sure you are up to date with your deworming. Mine gets worms faster than any other dog I've ever had. Have him the deworming pills in September, a couple of weeks ago started eating grass and didn't care much for his food. I thought it was just a phase, he gets them every now and then. Until he threw up a live worm, one morning. On my carpet... Grossed me the hell out.
If it doesn't get any better after fasting and couple of days of rice, you might want to talk to your vet. Giardiasis can cause diarrhea, so if it's been going on for a while and doesn't get better on rice, you might want to look into it.

After an explosive episode at 3am this morning when Millie alerted me to the fact she needed to get out of her crate and into the garden (good girl!) and me hosing the lawn down at 3:05am [emoji21] I promptly took her to the vet as the chicken and rice clearly wasn't working!! So she is now on 5 days of metronidazole.

Before this episode we had researched into changing her food as she came to us a little underweight and just doesn't seem to be putting enough in to stop seeing all her ribs. I was recommended a cold pressed food and have a bag ready and waiting. I was going to finish the bag that we had (about a quarter left), mixing the new in for a week when nearly finished it. However, she had to have chicken and rice for a few days more now and then normal practice is to start reintroducing kibble into that. My question is..... do I reintroduce her present food and then switch over when bag nearly done or do I write that bag off and introduce the new food in the chicken and rice when she's better? Hope that makes sense!!

Reintroduce the food once she is making solid turds. Do you know if she is allergic to chicken? I know some dogs get runs when they eat real chicken or chicken kibble.

Bummer about the 3am mess and needing the meds, but hopefully that does the trick!!

Once her system is clear, I'd introduce her to the new food you want her to go on full time next. I'd want to minimize the shifting of foods as you get her systems lined-up again.

If you have the old stuff left-over, either write it off as a loss, or keep it around for use as treats (or added to her regular meals in small amounts) later, but only after everything has calmed down and the poops have been good for a few weeks.

I'd be adding in a good probiotic for sure. Check with the vet if they think it's a good thing to add when she's on the meds, or if you should wait until the bad bugs have been cleared out first.

Yes her poos are the right shape and pick-up-able now! She's on say 4 of a 10 day course of antibiotics . They are the ones beginning with m that you had mentioned. I'm unsure as to when to start adding her food back into the chicken and rice though.

Hi Sarah,

If poopies are looking good, I would try to add a bit of her food into the rice and chick mix.

If poopies turn into mush again, then you know that this food is not agreeing with her. At which point, I would be looking at another type of kibble.
