Diet or Seasonal Allergies?

How can you tell if the allergies my 2 yr old English Mastiff has is either from his diet or from seasonal allergies? He has some allergy sores on him. Currently he eats Earthborn Holistic grain free.

He has been on that food since i got him, almost 2 years now. His stools is good, not runny. He has had the symptons of allergies on his skin for several months now. I took him to the vet, they said he has allergies and to basically give him benadryl or claritin. They did not know what he as allergies on unless they do tests on him. Just curious if he can develop a food allergy or if I should try to change his food?

Which Earthborn is he eating? Simplest is to change out his food for a completely different protein (INCLUDING ALL TREATS AND EDIBLE CHEWS) for at least 6 weeks, and see if it makes a difference.

While your at it think about any other changes that may have happened in the weeks previous to the symptoms appearing, did you change laundry detergents, fabric softeners, cleaners for surfaces he has access too.....

A month ago I purchased a puppy from Valentine Bullmastiff's in Mifflenburg PA, I was told the puppy had "seasonal allergies" 3,000 dollars later, the puppy had kennel cough, which developed into pneumonia!!!!!
Horrible horrible dishonest people!!

They can develop food allergies. I have read some where that you should change flavors every couple of months. I would follow CR's suggestion. Stay with Earthborn, but go with a different protein.

Kennel cough is a completely different set of symptoms than what the OP is describing

Normally he eats 3 cups a meal and he can eat it all in about 30 seconds. This past 2 weeks he's now taking about an hour to eat it. He's been eating the earthborn bison meat for over a year now. I just got a bag of the lamb meat version but he's still not excited to eat like he used to be. Is that normal? I don't think there is a blockage. Poop still good and no vomiting. That's why I'm thinking he could be developing an allergy to the food.

Here is something interesting. ...atleast I think it is

We adopted Murphy at 2 1/2 yrs old. It was in the month of July. By the end of July I had him to the vet for an ear infection. Sept back for an ear infection at this time I decided to take him off blue buffalo chicken thanks to the advice of the awesome members on here. Vet said if no infection come Nov then that was the allergy. Nov came no ear infection. Tada problem solved.
I thought to call his previous vet and found out that he also had an ear infection the previous March.
Murphy was once fed raw but due to having to go to doggie daycare for 14 hrs a day they changed him to kibble. He wasnt allergic to raw chicken but was to processed chicken.

So was it chicken or grain. Well I found out when stupid me decided to give Murphy an egg as a treat in his food. Lets just say that 5 cent egg cost $150 in the end. It was chicken. I think my vet actually called me a dumb ass but not in those words lmao

I haven't been here in awhile due to sick children (THEY) have bad asthma and allergies. I have already been to hospital with them and sad to say, on nebs and prelone already this summer (thank you heat and pollen), but my sully -cane corso- went through this whole ordeal with food allergies and skin allergy issuues!!

So hopefully the only thing I can do is tell you the hundreds upon hundreds of $$ i spent between vet bills and changing foods a gazillion times to finally being on a one protein kibble, limited ingredient diet, and it has cured ALL! No more skin flare ups, and no more diarrhea. Sully is on a venison and sweet potato kibble. i forgot the manufacturer, but I do know it's Organic and a lil more pricier than normal, but worth it. He likes it. His stools are formed, and the piles (sorry) are not as massive, so you know he's absorbing the ingredients vs passing them. I hope this may shed some help? I know these guys NEED bulking up, but my sully just turned a year and he's about 100 pounds. So a lil small. But his mom was very tiny. So I don't know what normal is. Problem is, we've had such a TERRIBLE time with Sully since a pup and his tummy :(

i took him to the vet but they said he looks fine with some allergies. They recommend I give some benadryl to help with the symptons for a couple of days and see if it gets better. Its now been 2 weeks and it has gotten better. I have changed the protein from Bison to the Lamb Earthborn. Everything else is fine but it is weird that it now takes him a long time to eat his meals and sometimes will not eat if he feels full I guess. I know dogs eating habits do change once they hit a certain age and I'm thinking this is the same case. Also, I am in Houston and it is hot. maybe that is messing with his appetite as well.
