To those that can, please explain the difference between the native Tibetan Mastiff and the glorified expensive variety that is being used as a Chinese status symbol.

Also, do many of the American breeders of this gorgeous pooch more likely to use the native Tibetan variety or the glorified Chinese version or more of an Americanized version of either?

The massively wrinkley over coated un-healthy dogs that are what usually catches the media's eyes have likely been crossed out with other breeds as well as overly inbred.
