Discovering the breeder you bought from is over breeding

Hello Everyone,

You may remember me posting about a 4 month old bullmastiff puppy that had swelling on and off in both of her hind legs. (Yes the issue is still ongoing and no we unfortunately still do not have an answer).

I discovered this week that the woman I purchased my bullmastiff puppy from this June of 2014 (puppies were born April 2014) is breeding the same female AGAIN. The female is pregnant and she is advertising that puppies will be ready for rehoming by Christmas. I also should mention that this same female dog just had a C-section in April 2014.

I have conversations with her stating that she only breeds her dogs once per year. She also advertises this on her Facebook business page. With all the health issues my Rogue has been experiencing from early on I was really not pleased to find this out. I am no dog breeder but as far as I am concerned if you truly care about the health of the dogs you are breeding and the puppies that you are selling I thought they should only be bred every 12 to 18 months and no more than 3 times.

Another odd coincidence is that she also breeds Parisian kittens, one of which my co-workers so happened to purchase from her. It ended up getting a severe eye infection in the first month of being rehomed and died. I understand they are two separate animals, but I can't help but feel put off by this entire situation. It is just odd that we both coincidentally purchased from the same breeder and we both had health issues with our new furry friends.

I really don't know what I can do about this or IF there is anything that can be done. I live in Ontario, Canada and so does the breeder. So far I have contacted the CKC to see if they can help guide me and I am still waiting on a response.

Does anyone else have any other suggestions of what I can do??

I feel sad for the dogs she is breeding and for anyone else that may be lead on to believe they are purchasing a healthy puppy. She really knows how to say exactly what you want to hear. :(

Thanks,
Michelle

Re: Discovering the breeder you bough from is over breeding

It CAN be safe to do back to back breedings, but were I looking at a pup from the 2nd I'd want to know what the repro vet said about the bitch's physical condition before the 2nd breeding.

I don't personally care for them because you don't really have enough time to see what the first litter really looks like before the 2nd breeding. But they're not nessecariliy a bad thing.

Have you talked to her about it? Even good Breeders CAN have oops litters, stud dogs will go to great lengths to get at a bitch in heat nearby, and I know of a bitch who went through (literally) a re-inforced horse stud stall wall when she was in heat. Or maybe she got a chance to use the stud of her dreams and this was the only timing that would work?

Or you could be right that she's a lying SOB. But unless the CKC has different rules I doubt theres much that can be done about it. If the Canadian BM club has a breeder code of ethics that forbids it AND she's a member you might have better luck there.

Re: Discovering the breeder you bough from is over breeding

That is good to know, thank you for the information. I obviously do not have breeding experience/knowledge, I only know things from self research and was under the impression that it was not in the dogs best interest to breed so much.

You are right, I have also thought that it could have been a mistake as she breeds her house pets. I'm not too sure how separate she keeps her females and males, but it appears like they all play together often.

I have not talked to her about it yet, although we have discussed Rogue's health issues so she is aware of that. I wanted to do a bit of my own digging before I confronted her just to be sure I am not jumping to conclusions/fighting a lost cause. I will definitely look in to the Canadian BM club. Thank you!

Back to back breedings are "one of those things".

BY it self its not necessarily the sign of a bad breeder, but it IS something that I'd want more info on were I to be looking at a pup from her. And I'd expect her to be giving the bitch a big break after the 2nd breeding (or even retire her entirely). But as long as she had a good repro vet check the bitch over and give her a clean bill of health AND ensured that a close eye is kept on the bitch during the pregnancy its not necessarily bad for the bitch.

But a breeder regularly does back to back breedings (and its not likely I'd except a 3rd one except as an "oops" and then you'd better be spaying that bitch after that), and/or doesn't have a repro vet (this is a specialist, not likely your regular vet is one) or doesn't take the dog in to be checked before the 2nd litter, and/or ESPECIALLY if they're lieing about it......then you've got a HUGE MAJOR red flag and you should be having not only 2nd thoughts about the breeder but also 3rd or 4th thoughts and looking somewhere else IMO.

Thanks again! I tried contacting a couple associations and they all seem to provide me with the same generic information. Since she is not a registered breeder with these associations they won't step in. I am hoping she has taken the right steps to ensure her dogs and puppies are as healthy as can be....
