Durable and mobile mastiff sized crate suggestions

We go to visit family with Ajax several times a year. He cannot be trusted in the house by himself yet, so we cart around a foldable metal crate to keep him in when we have to go out. We had a 48" wire foldable i Crate which I absolutely loved, however Ajax barely fits in it now. Unfortunately, the company does not make this crate any bigger. The research showed few 54" options. None are rated very high. People complain about flimsiness and poor quality. And none of them are quick up, quick down like the iCrate is. I thought I would ask you, knowledgable people for ideas.

I hope someone can point you towards something! I can point you to at least a couple large heavy duty crates (though I'm not sure of exact sizes off the top of my head), but none of them are what I'd call easily portable...

How destructive is he?

Would a tent work?

We have some that were sold as dog tents, but a small one-person tent might work just as well.

Our pup here is a 100lb Dane/Lab mix, for size reference:

have you checked ebay for one exactly like you had? Lots of folks use them for a bit and then put them in the garage for years. You might find one for sale.

I guess I should have said we have a 48", but it is too small. We are selling it. I was hoping to get the same one in bigger size, but, as I said, they don't make it any bigger. I was wondering if anyone knows of something compatible. I added a link to the crate we have. I hope it works.

A 54" crate would be really heavy to move, even a foldable one. Are there any other alternatives other than crating him?

Is it possible to set up a kennel for him outdoors since you visit this family several times a year?

If you liked the 48" iCrate, I would think you'd like the Midwest 54". I just got the Lifestages 48" over the iCrate, it's supposed to be sturdier, and it's my impression that this is essentially just the next largest size to mine.

Here's a 54" on Chewy with no divider panel included. I believe Oscar'smom just bought one: MidWest Solutions Series XX-Large Heavy Duty Double Door Dog Crate, XX-Large, 54-in

Also, if it's just for once in awhile, it'll be a pain to move, but the durability seems worth it if you have someone to help you carry it. Mine is supposedly 55lbs.

Thanks Hector! We will look up reviews on this one, see what people think. But it's definitely a possibility. There is not really an easy place to set up a kennel, and I hope as Ajax matures in a year or so, he could just be left in the house. As far as the weigh goes, that's what I have my husband for :) or if I happen to travel alone, I am sure I can find one of the relatives who can help carry and set it up.
I love your new profile picture by the way!

I have the same crate for Hector. Sturdy? Not at all and a pain in the ass to move. My Belgian slips out of it easy. It's heavy and you want to move the crate in one piece to avoid taking the whole damn thing apart. Sigh. When I bought this crate, I didn't know there was a foldable one lol or maybe I thought it was foldable....damn haha.

You're welcome and thanks! I wished I had a foldable xxl crate lol. The one I have is truly a PITA. As with all wire crates, they are not sturdy.

Holy cow, really? The 54", or the lifestages? I guess I'm lucky Hamlet is not an escapee.

Yeah the 54". If the dog doesn't know how to "escape" (like Hector) then they should be fine, but a dog that panics and thrashes and bites at the cage...then no unless you use straps, ties, or even boards to reinforce the cage.

We've got a 54" Best Pet brand wire folding crate, and its more than sturdy enough for Apollo, but Apollo's not an escapee AT ALL. I have no doubt that were he inclined he'd be out of it in a fairly short time....

Luckily Ajax has not tried to escape from his crates yet. Thanks for all your suggestions. They were very helpfu.
