Equipment for pulling??

Hey there, just looking for some not too expensive ideas for pulling equipment. I was thinking of starting my EM with some light weight pulling in the next month or two. Do I need a fancy harness? What kind of pulling apparatus?

I sent you a PM, but are you looking at competition weight pulling or carting? In general a weight pull harness can be used for carting, but a carting harness isn't usually recommended for weight pulling.

hmm I dont know..I'd say if he likes it and is healthy doing it, then comp pulling would be FUN! I don't really care about him carting my lazy ass around too much, LOL although that would be nice. :D

Geisthexe will probly chime in and she's got way more pulling experience than I do, but for just basic training not pulling much weight I'd probly start with a good quality carting harness thats adjustable. If you scroll down here to the working/pulling harness I know someone who has it: http://www.stillwaterkennelsupply.com/harnesses.htm that way you can get him used to the concept of pulling without spending a fortune. But this is a true weight pulling harness: http://www.stillwaterkennelsupply.com/wtpullharnesses.htm the biggest issue is that they're not adjustable and would require frequent replacement as he grew. I've been making Apollo's as I refuse to spend real money on one till he's full grown.

Also, around the house Apollo pulls a cheap plastic kids sled. No fancy cart required.

Yah, you want to avoid straining them till they're full grown, so lighter weights and close supervision, but you can do it. We've done some with Apollo since he was 6 months old, and his hips and elbows are fine.

Cool. I thought about cart pulling for Moo but wont do anything until she has been x-rayed. I know they do it alot here with Leo's so I guess yah, its pretty safe.

their XL harness is only for dogs up to 75 lbs. My EM is 120 lbs now. I'm thinking large harness will = large money, lol :D

The biggest issue we had with Apollo was he started getting unhappy about not being able to watch the other dogs when he was supposed to be pulling. I figure we'll try again once I'm sure his temperment has settled in and I know what to expect. In the mean time we do pulling around the yard with a sled of firewood.

lol! Yah, thats why I'm not buying a weight pull harness for Apollo yet. I'll poke around and see if I can find larger adjustable carting harness for you, assuming Geisthexe doesn't post something first.

Actually, Ruby might know where to find one, she was looking at carting not to long ago.

Doing some reading....some dogs like pulling, and some don't. I guess I will have to see if he even likes to do it first before I go investing in a bunch of equipment. With my luck I'll get all this stuff just to have him lay down and go to sleep with the harness on! lol :D

Ok I'm chiming in lol

First let me answer questions

- hips/elbows: you will not hurt your dog starting it at an early age (ie: see Presa section for Anabis @ 4 months pulling)
The only way to truly hurt hips / elbows would be trying to put mass weight on the dog from the start.

- Types of weight pulling systems
* rails (like a train track w/ cart) this system is the smoothest pull for a dog and easier to pull heavier weight.
* wheels (wheel cart w/ axels like a car)
A bit harder to pull depending on what surface (carpet easier to pull on or dirt is a bit harder of the two) this will lower the amount you will start with & train on.
* snow/dirt sled even harder and varies with which surface (dirt a bit easier bc does not stick / snow the sled freezes to ground) this would even start with less weight
* drag sled a small metal or wood sled used mainly for training this you wanna start out with less weight bc it does not have a motion like wheels to continue the roll. There is a few competition who use this in the event like Irondog & ACALs Olympic Dog

- harnesses you can pretty much put into google weight pulling harness and many businesses will pop up.
The cheapest to go to is The Working Canine http://www.theworkingk9.com/Stockharnesses.html
For a XL it starts at 58.00 I recommend her bc you are getting a great harness for just playing, training or competing.
I purchase mine from Brown Dog Design
http://weightpullharness.com/HarnessInfo.html
She is more expensive and makes for competitors

- Ages from 10-16 wks you wanna stay within weight depending on system you'll be putting on
- 16 wks to a year much more weight can start being added
- 2 and up should be pulling in the thousands if you are competing.

Well anymore info please ask
