Feeding RAW secrets?

LOL! allformyk9's! Yes, love a great sale on chickens! Titan likes the leg quarters, haven't tried 1/2 whole chicken yet. Titan will not eat organ meats. I've tried beef and calf livers, hearts, and gizzards. I decided to cook livers for treats and training.

Of my 5 now 6 .. Rhys (our 8 wk old pup, whose been on raw since 2 weeks) will inhaled anything I give him including liver, heart etc....

Cecily, our blue CC, will eat chicken liver BUT the other 4 flat out refuse to eat it =/ Going to try this evening offering just the liver first before anything else.

I usually feed chicken quarters too, local butcher I can get 40 lbs for $0.64/lb, pork shoulder for $1.29 - both are the best Ive found in my area. The butcher shop is a good 30 mins from me BUT my grocery store that often has whole chickens on sale is 10 mins from me so I usually load up on those when I can, haha!!!

Okay, started my two on raw this week (chicken) and they're both LOVING it. I know it is recommended to wait at least a couple of weeks before introducing organ meat. Will my very young Mastiff (11 weeks) be okay without organ meet for that long or will it effect her growth? And should I include any supplements for either? Also, I'm confused about feeding amounts... Some sites say 2-3% of their potential adult weight, some say 6-10% of their current weight. What do you all recommend? My boy is 7 months, and my girl is 11 weeks.

Thanks in advance!!

I feed my 11 week old 2-3% of his projected adult wt....too confusing figuring out 10% of his current. If they've done well on chicken Id go ahead & introduce organ. I supplement with a fish oil once a day & garlic (to help keep fleas/ticks & such away).

I feed 2-3% of projected adult weight. I like to start with 2.5% and go from there. If he is getting a little thin I would add more chunky give less. I would not add organ meat for 2-4 weeks. It won't harm him to go without for a while, it wont affect his overall growth. When you add it, add in small amounts at first don't go in with the whole 10% at once. I personally don't supplement anything but fish oil (if I don't have fresh fish for my dogs). .

Yes, dont forget to start small & go from there with organ - dont want blow outs from the rear .. not fun  I misread your post ... so I agree w/ OHF & Id wait another couple of weeks before adding organ.

I buy cases of chicken quarters for .56cent to .59cents a pound at a restaurant supply store. Chicken livers I pick up on clearance at the store for .59cents a pound to $1.15/lb. Gizzards are .90cents/lb. Pork between .75cent/lb to $1.29/lb depending on what it is and if I find it on clearance.
The restaurant supply store also has a cut of pork for .75cents/lb per case but that may be on the shopping list in a few months once all the chicken is gone.

I also picked up a case(40lbs) of sweet potatoes for $10 and I'm making dehydrated dog treats with them. Zillie my rottweiler isn't a fan at the moment so may not buy those again! Chuma hasn't had a chance to test them so we will see what happens to all these potatoes..

Raw whole eggs are fed often because I have hens and can't seem to get rid of the eggs fast enough.

Which is better? Sometimes I can get pork meat(mainly roast) as cheap as I can pork heart. Is one any better nutritionally for our dogs? Same with chicken.

Yipee! Pork ribs on sale here for .97.

I'm sorry one more question. Does anyone know the best time of year to by certain meat? EX., beef in the spring, goat in the fall....Or whatever it would be.

I am still on the search, quest, odyssey....for good cheap meat. I have been feeding raw part time since 2007. In 2009 I got my third dog, the mastiff. I decided to go all raw. I am NOT rich. I am pretty much the opposite of that. As it is, I currently feed 6 pounds of meat a day to my three (like feeding 2 mastiffs give or take some ounces).

I hunt. I have decided to donate all my deer to the dogs from now on. My husband always gets his bag limit so I may take some of his deer too. I asked my deer processor and they allow me to take anything out of their bins (usually legs, rib cages, and heads). As long as its below 40 degrees, this is pretty safe to do.

I have gotten some free meat from craigslist. People emptying out freezer burned meats and old game meat might as well give it to me instead of throwing it out, right?

I am still looking though. I am like a crack head but with meat instead. Always looking for deals. It would be wise to have a freezer to store large amounts of meat. I currently have a large chest freezer which is half for the dogs and half for the humans.

I also want to start breeding rabbits. I wont be able to feed my dogs solely on this but I think it would add nice variety.

I have heard some people have success posting well worded flyers looking for free/cheap meat as well. And some people (dare I mention this) have butchered freshly killed roadkill.

Hey, a dog's gotta eat.
